World War II
U.S. Army
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress on July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star medal to Stanley P. Slubecky, Private, Company K, 142d Infantry Regiment, for gallantry in action on 20 March 1945 in Germany. While attacking a hill in the Siegfried Line defenses, the 1st Platoon was nearing the crest, when the men were suddenly subjected to intense machine gun fire from a trench approximately 100 yards away. Private Slubecky, an acting squad leader, immediately dashed forward 75 yards in the face of the enemy fire to a position in front of the trench. From this point he fired a rifle grenade at the German machine gunners and rushed the trench, capturing the three badly shaken occupants. As a result of his gallant act, the members of the platoon were able to continue forward and secure their objective. Private Slubecky promptly deployed his men and was directing their defense against an enemy counterattack, when he was hit and seriously wounded by a sniper.
