Theodore M. West

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Captain Theodore M. West, 01283885, Infantry, 314th Infantry, United States Army, for gallantry in action in France. On 23 June 1944, 3rd Battalion Headquarters, the battalion aid station and motor pool were subjected to intense enemy rifle, machine pistol and artillery fire, producing heavy casualties. Recognizing this threat to vital supply and communication services, Captain West organized a 12-man patrol, consisting of one orderly, runners and message center personnel and attacked in the direction of the enemy fire. Despite the handicaps of darkness and inexperience, the patrol knocked out a pill box containing an enemy machine gun and anti-tank gun covering the main supply route to the battalion. Twelve prisoners were taken and three enemy were killed. As a result of the courageous action the supply route and communications to frontline units were safeguarded, and badly needed ammunition was moved up that same night. Captain West’s presence of mind, forceful leadership, and coolness under fire reflect highest credit on the military forces of the United States.
