General Orders 98, W.D., 1919
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Thomas A. Berry, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Vilcey, France, September 12, 1918. Private Berry was a member of a patrol, cleaning up a trench, when an enemy grenade was thrown into the midst of the group. With notable presence of mind and entire disregard for his own safety, Private Berry seized the grenade and threw it over the parapet, where it exploded an instant later, thereby saving the lives of his comrades.
