The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Thomas M. Jervey, First Lieutenant (Air Service), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Longuyon, France, October 31, 1918. Assigned to the 1st Army Observation Group, Air Service, armament officer, Lieutenant Jervey volunteered as observer on a photographic mission from Ontedy to Longuyon, 25 kilometers into the enemy lines. In combat with 14 enemy aircraft which followed, one enemy aircraft was destroyed. Lieutenant Jervey, regardless of the fact that his plane was badly shot up, and that his hands were badly frozen, continued on the mission, returning only upon its successful conclusion.
