The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Sergeant Thomas Meagher, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 29 September 1864, while serving with Company G, 158th New York Infantry, in action at Chapin’s Farm, Virginia. First Sergeant Meagher led a section of his men on the enemy’s works, receiving a wound while scaling a parapet.
