Vietnam War
Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 764 (16 January 1969)
By direction of the President, under the provisions of the Act of Congress, approved 9 July 1918. The Silver Star Medal is awarded to Thomas Banda, US54721174 (SSN: ***-**-****), Specialist Four, United States Army, Company A, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 5th Cavalry. For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Four Banda distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 3 December 1968, while serving as an assistant machine gunner with Company A, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 5th Cavalry during a reconnaissance in force mission near Dong Xoai, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large well-fortified enemy force and the machine gunner was seriously wounded, Specialist Banda exposed himself to the intense hostile fire as he moved to a forward fighting position to administer first aid to the injured soldier and simultaneously firing the machine gun into the insurgent’s positions. After moving the casualty to a more secure position, Specialist Banda returned to the heaviest contact area and placed accurate suppressive fire on the enemy emplacements. With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Banda remained behind to cover the withdrawal of his unit. He did not leave his exposed position until all members of his platoon were in good defensive positions. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
