The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Thomas W. Hoban, Captain (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 6th Armored Infantry Regiment, in action against enemy forces on 6 December 1942, in the vicinity of Tunisia. Captain Hoban distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism while conducting the defense of a position against constant attack by enemy ground troops supported by artillery and machine gun fire, as well as serial bombardment and strafing. He exposed himself without regard for his own safety and personally led three counter-attacks to recover lost ground. Captain Hoban’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
