Corporal Thurl W. Garrottson, Infantry, Company M, 413th Infantry, United States Army, for gallantry in action in Germany on 9 March 1945. With utter disregard for his personal safety, Corporal Garrottson voluntarily drove across four hundred fifty yards of open, enemy-observed terrain, under heavy shelling and directly aimed self-propelled artillery fire to carry vitally needed ammunition to his platoon, immediately returning across the same terrain to evacuate a severely wounded comrade. Corporal Garrottson’s remarkable gallantry exemplifies the finest traditions of the American combat solider, reflecting the highest credit upon himself and upon the armed forces of the United States. Entered military service from Oxford, West Virginia.
