    The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Vincil E. Brown, First Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near St. Mihiel, France, September 16, 1918. Seeing a comrade lying wounded and exposed to great danger of machine-gun and shell fire, Sergeant Brown went to his aid; and, after rescuing him, carried him through the sweeping barrage to the first aid station, a distance of one-half kilometer.
