Headquarters, First U.S. Army, General Orders No. 39 (1944)

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Vinton Walsh Dove, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 37th Engineer Combat Battalion, in action against enemy forces on D-Day, 6 June 1944, in France. Private Dove landed with his bulldozer and, finding conditions on the beach behind schedule, he pulled numerous wheeled vehicles and track-propelled vehicles out of the surf. Then, although a target, he cleared a road at beach exits E-1 and E-3.
