The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Walter H. Blanchard, Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Varennes, France, September 26, 1918. Corporal Blanchard, in company with an officer, crawled forward under heavy fire at the risk of his own life, and dragged back a wounded man, who was lying about 150 meters in front of our trenches.
