Walter J. Boardman

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Walter J. Boardman, Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Belleau Wood, France, July 18, 1918. Private First Class Boardman openly and fearlessly exposed himself to severe hostile fire and the fire of enemy snipers while rushing to capture an enemy ammunition carrier who was bringing up ammunition to one of the enemy’s machine-gun squads. Capturing the ammunition carrier, he threw many bombs into the machine-gun positions, killing or driving out the crews.
