Walter Thomas Hyssop Galliford

The Navy Cross is presented to Walter Thomas Hyssop Galliford, Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in action in the Champagne and Argonne sectors, France. Captain Galliford served as Intelligence Officer of the Fourth Marine Brigade in the operations of the Brigade on the Champagne and the Argonne-Meuse fronts. During the important phases of the attack north of the Argonne, November 1 – 11, 1918, when it was imperative that accurate and first hand information be obtained, Captain Galliford voluntarily visited the front line and returned with valuable information which successfully influenced subsequent operations.
