  • The Navy Cross is presented to Warren Laise Granger, Quartermaster Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism and fearless devotion to duty on the occasion of the explosions from lightning at the Naval Ammunition Depot, Lake Denmark, N.J., on 10 July 1926. Quartermaster Sergeant Granger at the time of the first explosion was visiting some friends about two miles distant from the Naval Ammunition Depot, and immediately proceeded by automobile to the Main Cannon Gate of the Picatinny Arsenal, where he remained on duty for twenty-five hours while shells and debris were falling around the sentry box from which he was receiving and sending messages in connection with the disaster. His messages were the first official notification of the disaster.
