William John Clark
The Navy Cross is awarded to Lieutenant William John Clark, U.S. Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in command of the Armed Guard of the S.S. Silver Shell. For the very prompt action in opening fire on the submarine which was sighted on May 30, 1917. The submarine was evidently badly damaged as she submerged, leaving her crew on deck. The evidence showed that the gunnery was excellent and the French Government later stated that this was the first submarine sunk after America entered the war.
