    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Cooper William Johnson, United States Navy, for gallant and heroic conduct while serving on board the U.S.S. Adams at the Navy Yard, Mare Island, California, 14 November 1879. Cooper Johnson rescued Daniel W. Kloppen, a workman, from drowning.
