    The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to William Massello, Jr., Major, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 60th Coast Artillery, in action against enemy forces on 6 May 1942, during the battle for Corregidor, in the Philippine Islands. While critically wounded and under continuing heavy fire, Major Massello directed artillery fire on the enemy and assisted his men in their firing operations until all of his guns were destroyed. His intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
