William R. Trommer
Silver Star
Vietnam War
U.S. Army
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to William R. Trommer, Private First Class, United States Army. For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Trommer distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 10 May 1968, while serving as a grenadier with Company D, 2d Battalion, 5th Cavalry during a combat mission in the Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force, Private First Class Trommer continuously exposed himself to the hostile fire in order to place accurate suppressive fire on the enemy emplacements. Disregarding his own safety, Private First Class Trommer then crossed an open area as he moved to a more advantageous position and continued to engage the insurgent’s fortification. His actions contributed greatly to the successful completion of his unit’s mission. Private First Class Trommer’s gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
