The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Major William Wells, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 3 July 1863, while serving with 2d Battalion, 1st Vermont Cavalry, in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Major Wells led the second battalion of his regiment in a daring charge.
