The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to William Z. Bell, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action east of Grand Pre, France, October 15, 1918. Private Bell, serving as stretcher bearer during two attacks, with exceptional bravery and disregard of danger exposed himself during an intense artillery bombardment to assist a wounded soldier in imminent need of first aid and was killed at his work by an enemy shell.
