The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Woodie E. Byrd, Bugler, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Samogneux, France, October 15, 1918. Bugler Byrd displayed notable bravery in successfully carrying messages to the right flank of his company after four other soldiers had been killed or wounded in attempting to carry out this mission.
