CALDON, DAVID LEE

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to David Lee Caldon (0-89878), Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Air Liaison Officer with the Second Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 6 April 1968, Captain Caldon was with a company-size patrol in the vicinity of Hill 558 near Khe Sanh as the unit's Forward Air Controller, when contact was made with an entrenched company of North Vietnamese Army Regulars. During the ensuing eight hours, he fearlessly exposed himself to hostile mortar and small arms fire to locate enemy positions and control fixed-wing air strikes. When the artillery forward observer was killed by enemy fire, Captain Caldon unhesitatingly assumed his duties and coordinated artillery fire as well as air strikes on enemy emplacements. Boldly moving through the hostile fire, he established a secure landing zone for the evacuation of casualties and then returned to exposed observation points to control supporting arms fires. On one occasion, when communication with the battalion command post was lost, Captain Caldon courageously moved across the fire-swept terrain to obtain tactical information and relay it over his radio. By his courageous actions, superior professional skill and unwavering devotion to duty at great personal risk, Captain Caldon inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Harold J. Campbell, Jr. (0-85928), Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron TWO-HUNDRED SIXTY-FIVE (HMM-265), near Khe Sanh, Republic of Vietnam, on 26 and 27 January 1967. When a six-man U.S. Marine Reconnaissance team was surrounded by a company of North Vietnamese Regulars, Captain Campbell was launched as the Aircraft Commander of one of two CH-46A helicopters to retract the beleaguered unit. On the first approach to the zone Captain Campbell saw his flight leader come under intense enemy fire and burst into flames in the zone as he orbited overhead. When his flight leader momentarily broadcast on the ground radio that all passengers were safe and had joined with the Marine Reconnaissance team, Captain Campbell returned to Khe Sanh, received permission to land a reaction force of U.S. Marines, and returned to the aid of his downed comrades. Knowing the only chance for survival for the grounded unit was reinforcements, Captain Campbell started his approach and also came under intense fire. He lost power and crash landed near the beleaguered Marines. Using their shouts for direction, Captain Campbell led the reaction force to the friendly perimeter and set to work assisting his flight leader who was now in command on the ground. Exposing himself to enemy fire, Captain Campbell assisted a Medical Evacuation helicopter to a safe landing during the night by holding a strobe light outside the perimeter to guide him down. Although wounded by grenade fragments, Captain Campbell continued to fight to hold their position and volunteered to be the last man out of the zone on rescue the following morning. By his daring actions and loyal devotion to duty in the face of grave personal risk, Captain Campbell upheld the finest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Andres Cantu, Jr. (2276912), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as the 60-mm. Mortar Section Leader of Company I, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 11 September 1968, while participating in Operation Lancaster II in the Cam Lo Valley, Corporal Cantu's unit came under intense hostile mortar fire and sustained several casualties. Observing that the Corpsmen required assistance in treating the casualties, Corporal Cantu fearlessly left his relatively covered position and aided in the treatment of the wounded, comforting the Marines and preparing them for evacuation. Disregarding the intense hostile fire, he returned to his platoon and discovered that the platoon commander had been medically evacuated for injuries. Unhesitatingly assuming control of the platoon, Corporal Cantu rapidly reorganized his men into an effective fighting force and ensured that all mortars were manned and ready to provide fire support if requested. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in preventing further Marines casualties. By his courage, superb leadership and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Corporal Cantu upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Michael David Carey (0-91723), First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps (Reserve), for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, Third Marine Division on 22 July 1966, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During Operation Hastings, First Lieutenant Carey's platoon was acting as the point element for his company as it moved down a stream bed in the Quan Cam Lo District of Quang Tri Province. Suddenly, the first squad was taken under intense automatic weapons fire by a North Vietnamese ambush force. In the initial burst of fire, four Marines were killed and the remainder of the squad was pinned down by hand grenades and rifle fire. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, First Lieutenant Carey unhesitatingly advanced to the front of his platoon and killed two enemy soldiers. Simultaneously, he skillfully directed the remaining squads into position in order to gain fire superiority. Observing two of his men, seriously wounded and exposed to enemy fire, he courageously dashed through the intense fire and moved the Marines to safety. After the casualties were evacuated, First Lieutenant Carey returned to the ambush site and effectively maneuvered the remainder of the platoon in an attack on the enemy positions which routed the enemy forces. His selfless disregard for his own safety and valiant leadership preserved the integrity of his unit and undoubtedly saved the lives of his men. By his courage and exceptional fortitude in the face of enemy fire, keen professional ability and unfaltering dedication to duty at great personal risk, First Lieutenant Carey upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star Medal to Michael David Carey (0-91723), First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps (Reserve), for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, Third Marine Division on 24 July 1966,, in connection with operations against the enemy. During the attack and subsequent defense of Hill 362, First Lieutenant Carey repeatedly exposed himself to hostile fire to inspire and direct the efforts of his platoon against a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. While the First and Second Platoons were bitterly engaged with the enemy, he courageously led the Third Platoon forward to prevent an encirclement of his company by the enemy. Moving his squads forward, First Lieutenant Carey, with complete disregard for his own safety, personally assaulted the advancing enemy unit with hand grenades. 'His aggressive and determined actions were so unexpected that he thoroughly disorganized the enemy and enabled his men to-maneuver through the thick underbrush and launch an assault against the determined enemy. After the hill had been partially secured, he consolidated his men to form a strong defensive position. Simultaneously, he made-provisions to have the wounded evacuated to a secure area. Although his position was under continuous heavy enemy mortar and small arms fire, First Lieutenant Carey fearlessly moved among his men, directing their fire and encouraging them to hold their positions. His inspiring leadership, despite a painful wound sustained during the fire fight, was instrumental in the success of his unit in accomplishing its mission. By his exceptional fortitude in the face of intense enemy fire, selfless and heroic actions, keen professional skill and unfaltering dedication to duty, First Lieutenant Carey upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

On 9 May 1967, Lance Corporal Carlson was the Point Man of a seven-man reconnaissance patrol on a mission deep within enemy controlled territory near Khe Sanh. After discovering numerous enemy bunkers and confiscating an assortment of enemy equipment during the afternoon, the patrol moved to high ground and established a night defensive position. Shortly after midnight, the small patrol came under heavy small arms fire from approximately fifty North Vietnamese Army soldiers. In the initial burst of enemy fire, the Marines suffered two casualties. Unhesitatingly and courageously, Lance Corporal Carlson moved to a position from which he could direct effective fire at the enemy. Vicious enemy fire battered the patrol's position and within minutes, several more Marines became casualties. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Carlson maneuvered to different positions in order to bring a heavy volume of small arms fire and grenades against the North Vietnamese Army force. As a result of his daring actions, the enemy was prevented from learning the exact number of patrol members who were able to continue fighting. In less than two hours, only Lance Corporal Carlson and one other Marine were able to man their weapons. Throughout the night, the enemy continued to attack the Marines in an attempt to overrun the patrol's position. On several occasions, North Vietnamese soldiers approached to within fifteen feet of his position, but were driven back by the intense fire delivered by Lance Corporal Carlson and his companion. Although he was subsequently wounded by enemy small arms fire, Lance Corporal Carlson continued to throw hand grenades and bring accurate fire to bear on the enemy. Several attempts to extract the Marines by helicopter were unsuccessful because of the heavy enemy fire. During the early morning hours, Lance Corporal Carlson was wounded a second time but fearlessly continued to man his weapon until his unit was extracted by helicopter. His steadfast determination and indomitable fighting spirit throughout the twelve-hour ordeal were instrumental in inflicting numerous casualties on the enemy and saving the lives of several Marines. By his extraordinary courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of extreme danger, Lance Corporal Carlson upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

On 15 January 1969, Lance Corporal Carroll was standing watch during a cordon operation around the village of Cam Sa in Quang Nam Province when he alertly observed eight North Vietnamese Army soldiers crawl through a hedgerow near the village. With complete disregard for his own safety, he opened fire on the hostile group and, although he came under a heavy volume of return fire, resolutely maintained his dangerously exposed position, thereby enabling his men to deploy to covered fighting positions. During the ensuing engagement with the numerically superior force, the fire team's machine gun malfunctioned, and realizing the seriousness of the situation, Lance Corporal Carroll, again standing in full view of the enemy and delivering cover fire, killed two hostile soldiers and pinned down the others, while his companions corrected the deficiency. While thus protecting his fellow Marines, he was mortally wounded. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and subsequently enabled his comrades to repel the attack of the North Vietnamese soldiers. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Carroll saved several Marines from possible death or serious injury and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

At about 0400 on 12 August 1969, Lance Corporal Cashman's unit was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force of North Vietnamese Army regular soldiers. The listening post was taken under fire and unable to withdraw to friendly lines. One squad was directed to bring them back to the defensive perimeter. Lance Corporal Cashman unhesitatingly grabbed his M60 machine gun and ammunition and proceeded to accompany the rifle squad forward providing protective fire and verbal reassurance to the listening post that relief was on the way. As the enemy small arms, mortar, and grenade fire intensified around the Marines he moved more to the front to provide covering fire. Following the successful link-up the Marines began to withdraw, again supported by the violent and effective fire of Lance Corporal Cashman. He remained forward, single-handedly holding off the advance of the enemy company, while his fellow Marines returned to friendly lines. He was last seen alive firing his machine gun from his hip, killing, wounding, and stopping the onrushing enemy attackers. Lance Corporal Cashman was killed by enemy small arms fire, while holding his position, valiantly giving his life to ensure the safety of his fellow Marines. By his daring, heroic actions and loyal devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal risk, Lance Corporal Cashman reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

In the early morning hours of 6 June 1967, Lance Corporal Castillo, along with seventeen men, was defending a vital radio relay position on Hill 950 near Khe Sanh, which came under intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, mortar and rocket fire, followed by an assault by an estimated ninety North Vietnamese Regulars. Almost immediately, six Marines were killed and four were seriously wounded. Unhesitatingly, Lance Corporal Castillo exposed himself to enemy fire and assisted in effectively halting enemy penetration attempts by delivering a heavy volume of accurate fire on the hostile force. Throughout the remaining hours of darkness, he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy machine gun fire to prevent the North Vietnamese from outflanking and overrunning his position and, on one occasion, crawled forward, surprising three of the enemy and killed them. When, after several hours of continuous combat, the Marines' weapons began malfunctioning, Lance Corporal Castillo daringly crawled forward and obtained four weapons from the enemy dead, which enabled his men to continue fighting. At dawn, when the few uninjured Marines launched a counterattack, he outflanked the enemy and delivered a heavy volume of accurate fire, materially assisting in overrunning a machine gun emplacement and routing the enemy from the hill. He aggressively continued to pursue the fleeing enemy until he was restrained by his squad leader. His exemplary leadership and aggressive fighting spirit were instrumental in the defeat of the enemy and were an inspiration to all who observed him. On 13 August 1969, Company I was participating in a battalion-sized search and destroy operation in Quang Nam Province when the Marines came under a heavy volume of mortar, machine gun, and automatic weapons fire from a hostile unit occupying concealed emplacements in a tree line. Observing one wounded Marine fall in a dangerously exposed position, Corporal Castor, with complete disregard for his own safety, fought his way across the fire-swept terrain toward his companion but, upon attaining his objective, sustained a wound which severed an artery. Ignoring his painful injury, he rendered medical assistance to the casualty until he was satisfied that the man would recover. Remaining in the dangerous area, he then attempted to treat his own extensive wound, but collapsed and succumbed to his injury without having informed anyone that he had been wounded. His heroic actions and determined efforts inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the life of a fellow Marine. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Corporal Castor upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.

Chiofolo (2417922), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with, Company K, Third Battalion, Twenty-Seventh Marines, First Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 17 May 1968, during Operation Allen Brook, Company K launched an attack on a well entrenched North Vietnamese Army force near Le Bac in Quang Nam Province and immediately came under intense small arms and automatic weapons fire. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private First Class Chiofolo immediately commenced delivering a heavy volume of rifle fire into the fortified emplacements, which enabled a machine gun team to move forward and engage the enemy. In the ensuing fire fight, the team became pinned down, and when the M-60 machine gun malfunctioned, Private First Class Chiofolo fearlessly maneuvered across the fire-swept terrain in an attempt to draw the fire and attention of the enemy away from his comrades. Delivering accurate fire into the hostile emplacements, he succeeded in diverting the enemy fire, enabling the Marines to maneuver to positions of relative safety. Alertly observing three North Vietnamese soldiers launching a determined assault upon his comrades, he boldly exposed himself to the intense hostile fire and aggressively engaged the enemy soldiers, killing two of them. Although seriously wounded by a hostile sniper, he ignored his painful injury and steadfastly remained in his hazardous position, until forcibly restrained and moved to a covered position by fellow Marines_ His resolute determination and heroic actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission_ By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unfaltering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Private First Class Chiofolo upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Navel Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Tony A. Cisneros (2327825), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company K, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 7 February 1968, Private First Class Cisneros' platoon was pinned down by the fire from an estimated North Vietnamese Army battalion south of Gio Linh and sustained numerous casualties. Observing a wounded Marine lying fifty meters to his front, Private First Class Cisneros completely disregarded his own safety and crawled under intense hostile fire to retrieve the casualty. En route to the injured man, he fired to light antitank assault round at hostile emplacements, killing three enemy soldiers. Upon reaching the wounded Marine, Private First Class Cisneros picked up his companion and began carrying him back toward the friendly lines when he was forced to stop and return fire due to the increasing intensity of enemy fire. Undaunted, he again picked up the casualty and had returned to within twenty-five meters of his platoon's position when he was wounded in the foot and ankle. Although he was unable to continue, his proximity to Marine positions facilitated the prompt rescue of both himself and his companion. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Private First Class Cisneros undoubtedly saved the life of his wounded comrade and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Collins (2127450), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a rifleman with Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in the Republic of Vietnam on 1 February 1968. During Operation HUE CITY, Corporal Collins' platoon was taken under devastating small-arms, automatic weapons and rocket fire by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. In the initial moments of the attack, the lead squad sustained several casualties and was pinned down. Although carrying his radio, he moved forward through the intense enemy fire to direct accurate fire against the enemy. As the unit was reinforced with tanks, and because of the lack of communications between the tanks and infantry, Corporal Collins dashed through the fire-swept streets and climbed on top of one of the vehicles to direct their fire. Although he was exposed to enemy fire, he steadfastly maintained radio contact with the tanks and fired his weapon. Undaunted by the heavy volume of fire directed at him, he courageously maintained his precarious position and continued to direct the tanks until he was mortally wounded. By his bold initiative, gallant fighting spirit and loyal devotion to duty, Corporal Collins reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Edward Collins, Jr. (2404021), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 30 March 1968, during Operation SCOTLAND, Company B was engaged in patrol activities near Khe Sanh Combat Base, when the lead elements came under intense mortar and automatic weapons fire from a well entrenched, numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force, temporarily pinning down the Marines and causing several casualties. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private First Class Collins completely disregarded his own safety as he unhesitatingly ran across the fire-swept area on four occasions and boldly assaulted the hostile bunkers, killing several enemy soldiers and destroying four emplacements, enabling his unit to continue the attack. Although temporarily stunned when a hostile grenade struck his helmet, he quickly recovered and continued his assault, killing five additional North Vietnamese soldiers before the company was ordered to break contact. While the remainder of his unit was withdrawing, he resolutely remained behind to provide highly effective covering fire and assist in the evacuation of the wounded. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly in his unit accounting for 115 North Vietnamese soldiers confirmed killed. Although seriously wounded in the initial moments of the fire fight, he declined medical assistance and continued to direct accurate fire against the enemy. Fully realizing the seriousness of his injury, he refused evacuation and remained in his exposed position to pinpoint the location of the enemy and direct his patrol's fire. Subsequently, he was medically evacuated from the hazardous area and later succumbed to the severity of his wounds. His heroic actions and calm presence of mind were instrumental in enabling is companions to reach more advantageous positions and undoubtedly saved several Marine lives. On 7 May 1969, Major Cox launched as Division Leader of a flight of three CH-46 transport helicopters assigned the mission of inserting a Marine reconnaissance team into an area near a suspected enemy base camp five miles southwest of An Hoa. Aborting his first approach to the landing zone when he encountered intense hostile ground fire, he then selected an alternate insertion site, maneuvered his aircraft to a landing in an area covered by tall elephant grass, and began to disembark his eight-man increment. When the team came under an extremely heavy volume of enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire, it immediately began re-boarding the CH-46. Advised that all the Marine were aboard, Major Cox was lifting out of the area when he received a report that three team members were still on the ground. Undaunted by the intensity of the hostile fire directed against his aircraft, he completely disregarded his own safety as he boldly maneuvered his helicopter to a landing and resolutely remained in the fire-swept zone until the three men had embarked. As the CH-46 began to lift out of the dangerous area, one of the team members was struck by an enemy round and thrown from the ramp to the ground. When informed of the incident, Major Cox again braved the heavy volume of hostile fire as he landed in the hazardous area and fearlessly remained in his precarious position for the fifteen minutes required to locate the seriously injured and unconscious Marine, carry him to the helicopter, and place him aboard. Skillfully maneuvering his aircraft to elude enemy fire, he then lifted out of the perilous area and proceeded to the medical facility at An Hoa. By his courage, superior airmanship and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Major Cox was instrumental in saving the lives of several of his fellow Marines and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Cravens (2235732), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Assault Man in the 3rd Platoon of Company L, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, against North Vietnamese (NVA) forces in the Republic of Vietnam on 7 September 1967. Private First Class Cravens' unit was sent out as a reaction force to relieve pressure on a vehicle convoy which had been ambushed by NVA forces on Route 9, just west of the Rockpile in Quang Tri Province. Company L linked up with Company I at the ambush site and deployed to assault the enemy force that had inflicted severe casualties upon Company I. Private First Class Cravens was on the left flank when the entire company became pinned down by heavy machine gun fire from enemy positions to the front of the company. The unit began taking heavy casualties and was unable to continue the assault. Private First Class Craven spotted the machine gun position and immediately made a frontal assault directly into the enemy position. With total disregard for his own safety and through withering enemy fire, he killed the enemy gun crew with his rifle and the Company was then able to continue the attack, driving the NVA forces from the hilltop position. Private First Class Cravens then was ordered to take the captured machine gun down the slope to Route 9 to the Company Commander. When he got to the road, he observed six wounded Marines in exposed positions taking direct fire from the enemy. Private First Class Cravens summoned help from another Marine and the two, of them made three trips across the road under heavy enemy fire, retrieving the six wounded Marines and saving their lives. By his extraordinary courage, inspiring valor, and selfless devotion to duty, Private First Class Cravens reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Curtis Eugene Crawford (2127011), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company G, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division in Vietnam on 28 February 1967. On this day Company G made solid contact with a larger enemy force in the vicinity of Hill 124, just northwest of Cam Lo. The enemy was well dug-in and was able to put out such a volume of small arms and automatic weapons fire that the company was pinned down. Under a hail of hostile fire, Corporal CrawFord, a machine gun squad leader, brought his guns forward and set them up on the left flank of his platoon's most forward positions, only 40 meters from enemy emplacements. From this position, he caught sight of a Marine who had been wounded during one of the earlier assaults. Unhesitatingly, he bounded forward, exposing himself to enemy fire to render assistance to the fallen Marine. As he cleared his cover an enemy sniper opened up from close range wounding him in the leg and knocking him to the ground. Ignoring his wound, Corporal CrawFord was able to whirl and send a lethal burst of rifle fire into the sniper's spider hole, killing him. He then continued to move forward to the Marine casualty. He had advanced only several more meters, when he was fired upon again and mortally wounded. Corporal CrawFord's selfless courage, perseverance and loyal devotion to duty upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Daniel Crawl, Jr. (2178449), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Ammunition Technician with Force Logistic Support Unit, Force Logistic Support Group Alpha, Force Logistic Command, in connection with operations against insurgent Communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 3 September 1967, the Dong Ha Combat Base came under a heavy enemy artillery attack and several rounds impacted in the Ammunition Supply Point containing 18,000 tons of ordnance, which resulted in large secondary explosions, scattering fragments and sensitized ordnance over a wide area. Although trapped in a bunker in the hazardous area, Lance Corporal Crawl, realizing the seriousness of the situation, left the relative safety of the bunker and guided several of the dazed Marines to safety. Upon arriving at the aid station, he observed that all members of the Ammunition Platoon were not accounted for. Accompanied by another Marine, he unhesitatingly returned to the dangerous area to search for the trapped Marines. Despite fragmentation wounds received from exploding ordnance, he resolutely continued his search, located more of his comrades and led them to safety. Informed that additional personnel were still in the hazardous area, Lance Corporal Crawl, ignoring his painful injuries, fearlessly reentered the Ammunition Supply Point for the second time and successfully returned with the remaining members of the platoon. His heroic actions and selfless concern for the welfare of his fellow Marines were an inspiration to all who observed him and undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades. By his courage, unfaltering determination and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, Lance Corporal Crawl upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to William Thomas Cumbie (2308561), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Scout Dog Handler with Company I, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 9 February 1969, Corporal Cumbie was acting as Point Man for Company I during a search and destroy operation when he alertly observed a hostile force occupying a well-concealed ambush site. With complete disregard for his own safety, he unhesitatingly shouted a warning to his fellow Marines and commenced directing accurate fire on the enemy. Although aware of the danger involved, he steadfastly remained in his exposed position and continued drawing the attention of the hostile soldiers as his companions deployed to covered fighting positions. While engaged in this selfless task, he was mortally wounded. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and saved numerous Marines from serious injury or possible death. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Corporal Cumbie contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.

During the early morning hours of 28 May 1968, while occupying a defensive position southeast of Khe Sanh, Company F came under heavy attack by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. Reacting instantly, Lance Corporal Cutbirth skillfully directed the delivery of accurate machine gun fire upon the enemy. When elements of his company became dangerously low of ammunition during the ensuing fire fight, he unhesitatingly exposed himself to the intense fire and moved from one position to another, distributing critically needed ammunition and shouting words of encouragement to his comrades. On several occasions, he boldly maneuvered about the fire-swept terrain, moving injured Marines to positions of relative safety and administering first aid. As the enemy advanced to within fifteen meters of his squad's position, Lance Corporal Cutbirth fearlessly commenced throwing hand grenades at the attacking force, inflicting numerous casualties and forcing the North Vietnamese soldiers to withdraw. Seizing a rifle, he steadfastly directed accurate fire on the enemy until he was mortally wounded. His heroic actions and sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Cutbirth upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to David Warren Cutshall (2217976), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gun Team Leader with Company M, Third Battalion, Third Marines, Third Marine Division. On 6 March 1968, during a company-size operation near Con Thien, Lance Corporal Cutshall's platoon came under intense enemy automatic weapons, mortar and artillery fire from a well entrenched battalion of North Vietnamese Army Regulars. Observing enemy movement through the brush, he marked the area with machine gun tracer rounds, which enabled an anti-tank assault team to destroy an enemy bunker with rocket fire. Throughout the five-hour firefight, he maintained a critical position and directed highly effective machine gun fire upon the enemy. Ordered to withdraw to a more advantageous position, he provided covering fire for his companions as they moved to join their platoon. While preparing to throw a hand grenade, Lance Corporal Cutshall was severely wounded by enemy grenade fragments, which caused him to drop his grenade. Without regard for his own safety, he immediately fell upon the activated grenade to shield his companions. Although he was killed when it exploded, he undoubtedly saved the lives of his three companions. By his extraordinary courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Cutshall upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
