We believe that this index of Vietnam War recipients is 90% complete, though we continue to sort through records to identify late awards, as well as to compile additional information on the recipients (Rank/Unit/etc.) and their citations. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Ronald C. Darden (2300409), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company L, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 7 September 1967, elements of Company L were conducting a clearing operation on Hill 70, a low ridge one mile north of Ca Lu in Quang Tri Province when it suddenly came under intense mortar and small arms fire from an entrenched North Vietnamese Army force, killing one Marine and wounding three others. Observing one of the fallen men lying in the open exposed to hostile fire and unable to defend himself due to the malfunction of his rifle, Corporal Darden, then a Lance Corporal, completely disregarded his own safety as he unhesitatingly ran through the heavy volume of enemy fire to the side of the injured Marines. Immediately confronted with a North Vietnamese soldier aiming a rifle at him from a spider hole only five feet away, he assaulted the enemy and while attempting to seize his weapon, was wounded in the side when the rifle discharged. Quickly rolling out of the way, he threw a grenade into the spider hole. Simultaneously, the North Vietnamese soldier threw a grenade at Corporal Darden. Concerned only for the welfare of his fellow Marines, he completely ignored his own pain and the danger to his life as he shouldered the wounded man and started for his lines. The enemy soldier was killed by Corporal Darden's grenade, but the hostile grenade exploded, felling and seriously wounding Corporal Darden. Undaunted by the continuing heavy volume of North Vietnamese fire and the seriousness of his own injuries, he courageously pulled the wounded Marines to the safety of the friendly perimeter before collapsing form exhaustion and the intense pain of his injuries. Due largely to his prompt and fearless actions, he inspired his platoon to aggressive actions that completely routed the North Vietnamese. By his bold initiative, courage and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Corporal Darden was undoubtedly instrumental in saving the life of a fellow Marine and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service

Davis (0-92159), Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Pilot with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron TWO HUNDRED SIXTY-TWO (HMM-262), Provisional Marine Aircraft Group THIRTY-NINE (MAG-39), FIRST Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Late on the night of 20 September 1968, Captain Davis launched as Section Leader of a flight of two CH-46 transport helicopters assigned to medically evacuate wounded Marines from a ridge line north of the Rockpile in Quang Tri Province. Arriving over the designated area, he was informed by the Forward Air Controller that the landing zone was surrounded by high trees and that the best avenue of approach to avoid possible enemy fire was from the southeast. Undaunted by the adverse weather conditions and a heavy volume of hostile fire directed at his aircraft as he approached the landing zone, Captain Davis fearlessly continued his approach until the increased intensity of enemy mortar, small arms and automatic weapons fire forced him to abort his landing. Electing to attempt another landing, he skillfully coordinated his second approach with gunship attacks and directed his crew in delivering a heavy volume of continuous suppressive fire as he skillfully maneuvered his CH-46 to a landing in the hazardous area. Although subjected to intense mortar and automatic weapons fire, he steadfastly remained on the ground until eight casualties were embarked before expeditiously departing the dangerous location. Delivering two critically wounded men to a hospital ship, he then proceeded with the remaining casualties to the medical facility at Quang Tri. By his courage, superb airmanship and selfless devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Captain Davis was instrumental in saving the lives of several Marines and thereby upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Edward Dale Davis (2307471), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company C, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the night of 6 July 1967, Company C came under attack by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. In the ensuing engagement, the Second Platoon was pinned down by a heavy volume of enemy machine gun fire. Realizing the seriousness of the situation and with complete disregard for his own safety, Private First Class Davis unhesitatingly moved forward across the fire-swept terrain and, firing his rifle and throwing hand grenades, aggressively charged the hostile position, killing four North Vietnamese soldiers and destroying the machine gun emplacement. When the enemy attempted to penetrate the Marines' perimeter, Private First Class Davis fearlessly stood up and although exposed to the intense hostile fire, delivered accurate rifle fire against the attackers and prevented them from overrunning his squad's positions. As a result of his calm presence of mind and aggressiveness, he undoubtedly saved numerous fellow Marines from injury or death and enabled the corpsmen to administer medical aid to the casualties and move them to a position of relative safety. His heroic and timely actions were an inspiration to all who observed him and contributed immeasurably to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. By his steadfast courage, exceptional professionalism and selfless devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, Private First Class Davis upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Stanley Davis (0-24203), Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam from 4 to 15 September 1967. Informed of a suspected North Vietnamese Army troop buildup in Que Son Valley south of DaNang, Colonel Davis immediately called upon all available intelligence sources to confirm the position and size of the hostile force. Realizing the urgency for speed in exploiting the opportunity to destroy the enemy troop concentration, he displayed outstanding professional skill and leadership in planning, coordinating and commencing a timely search and destroy mission on 4 September 1967, which launched Operation Swift. Completely disregarding his own safety, he constantly exposed himself to North Vietnamese small arms and automatic weapons fire as he flew at low altitude in a command and control helicopter to make rapid estimates of the developing situation and formulate plans of action to counter hostile moves or exploit advantages gained by his units. Undaunted by the vicious enemy fire, Colonel Davis made frequent trips to the forward command posts of his battalions and to front line positions of his engaged units, often joining the battalion in heaviest combat in order to sustain the momentum of the regimental attack and to personally supervise and maneuver his men. His extensive knowledge of tactics, skillful deployment of elements of his command and sound judgment and advice instilled confidence and inspired his men to exert maximum effort as they fought to defeat the numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. He personally directed the effective employment of supporting arms, including artillery, naval gunfire and close air support. As a result of Colonel Davis' expertly conceived and skillfully directed operation, his regiment inflicted over 570 enemy confirmed killed, 529 probable killed and destroyed hundreds of hostile emplacements and caves. In addition, several tons of enemy weapons, ammunition and equipment were captured. Due largely to his exceptional professional ability, resolute determination and sound tactical decisions, he contributed materially to the outstanding success of Operation Swift, which had far reaching effects on projected enemy operations. By his dynamic leadership, courage and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Colonel Davis upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Denning, Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Grenadier with Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 26 January 1968, Private First Class Denning's squad was the point element of a platoon-size patrol northwest of Hill 861 near Khe Sanh in Quang Tri Province. Approaching a complex of three reinforced enemy bunkers, the patrol immediately came under heavy enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire. After an artillery mission had been called in on the enemy, Private First Class Denning's squad delivered suppressive fire on the fortified positions while the remainder of the platoon commenced an assault. Repeatedly moving to positions exposed to hostile fire, he delivered continuous fire against the hostile bunkers with his M-79 Grenade Launcher, enabling the assaulting force to move closer to the enemy. Observing that increasingly intense enemy automatic weapons fire had temporarily halted the Marines' advance, Private First Class Denning unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his own safety maneuvered closer to the bunkers in order to deliver more accurate fire on the enemy. Ignoring the heavy enemy small arms fire, he boldly stood up and fired at the enemy positions and shouted words of encouragement to his comrades as they resumed their attack. Although he became the target of intense hostile automatic weapons fire, he courageously ran forward, firing his weapon into the bunker entrances until he was struck by enemy fire and fell mortally wounded. Inspired by his selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, his companions aggressively continued their assault and quickly destroyed the enemy force. Private First Class Denning's exemplary courage, bold initiative and inspiring devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Dan Michael Dennis (2053890), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Third Squad Leader, Second Platoon, Company M, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 13 May 1967. During Operation UNION near Phouc Duc, Quang Tin Province, as Company M was relieving another company, which had taken heavy casualties, the Second Platoon received intense small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire from the well dug-in enemy. Immediately upon reaching its objective, the Second Platoon began to take casualties, while evacuating the dead and wounded of the relieved company. Shortly thereafter, when his Platoon Commander became a casualty, Corporal Dennis gallantly led the platoon forward to a covered area, establishing a well-disciplined base of fire and set about the task of retrieving the dead and wounded. Exposing himself at great personal risk to the intense enemy fire, he moved among the squads issuing orders and supervising his men. During this time, he and his men evacuated 28 Marines to the rear. Moving from position to position, he inspired his men with dynamic leadership and a courageous fighting spirit, until he fell mortally wounded, while selflessly assisting in the evacuation of a wounded Marine. Corporal Dennis' outstanding courage and devotion to duty inspired all who observed him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Late on the afternoon of 5 March 1968 during Operation Napoleon/Saline, the lead platoon of Company A was participating in a company-size search and clear mission near the village of Dai Do in Quang Tri Province when the unit came under heavy enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire, wounding several Marines and pinning down the remainder of the platoon. Rapidly assessing the situation, Lance Corporal Derryberry provided covering fire which enabled a corpsman to move across the fire-swept area to reach the injured men and administer first aid. Then, ignoring the heavy volume of hostile fire, he led a fire team across the hazardous area to carry a re-supply of ammunition to the platoon, advancing under intense fire to the most forward position. Repeatedly exposing himself to hostile fire, he carried the casualties to safety, refusing to leave the battle area until he ensured that all the wounded had been moved to covered positions. Subsequently, when his company was engaged in another search and clear mission on 7 March near the village of Phu Ta, the Marines suddenly came under heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire from an estimated two North Vietnamese Army companies. During the assault against the village, Lance Corporal Derryberry was mortally wounded. By his courage, inspiring leadership and selfless devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Derryberry upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Dinota (1858560), Staff Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while servings as a Platoon Commander with Company M, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 1 February 1967, during Operation DESOTO, the lead elements of Staff Sergeant Dinota's platoon came under heavy machine gun and sniper fire from Viet Cong located in a series of bunkers. He immediately moved to a position where he could direct the fire of his men. While pinpointing the enemy positions for one of his M- 60 machine gun teams, he was exposed to a heavy volume of enemy fire from at least six enemy bunkers. Realizing that another machine gun team had not located the enemy bunkers, he sprinted across sixty meters of exposed terrain to assist the team in locating the enemy targets. Directing the fire of 3.5 rocket launchers against the hostile positions, he succeeded in destroying one enemy bunker which produced a large secondary explosion. In addition, he effectively marked enemy positions which facilitated the accurate delivery of air and artillery fire, resulting in the subsequent destruction of a series of mutually supporting bunkers connected by trenches. As a result of his actions, the company was able to maintain its position and establish a defensive perimeter. During the engagement, when a fire team experienced difficulty in retrieving a wounded Marine, Staff Sergeant Dinota unhesitatingly assisted in retrieving the wounded man and carried him over forty meters of fire swept terrain to a position of safety. Throughout, Staff Sergeant Dinota displayed outstanding courage, exemplary professional skill and daring initiative in the face of heavy enemy fire, and thereby upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

Dodson (0-101865), First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company C, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 7 July 1968, Company C was attacking enemy positions west of Hill 689 in Quang Tri Province when the Marines came under an intense North Vietnamese automatic weapons, mortar and hand grenade attack, sustaining numerous casualties. With complete disregard for his own safety, First Lieutenant Dodson immediately assaulted a position at the point of his platoon and began shouting words of encouragement to his men and directing their fire as he led them forward from one bomb crater to another. Alertly observing a concealed emplacement which was pinning down one of his machine gun teams with accurate fire, he launched a determined assault and, although wounded, destroyed the enemy position. Observing three of his men pinned down by automatic weapons fire, First Lieutenant Dodson unhesitatingly rushed across thirty meters of fire-swept terrain and provided effective covering fire which enabled the Marines to move to a more advantageous position. Repeatedly exposing himself to the intense enemy fire, he skillfully directed the evacuation of the wounded, and as he spoke words of comfort to them, he was mortally wounded. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and saved the lives of several Marines. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Dodson upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

On 9 May 1969, First Lieutenant Donovan launched as Section Leader of a flight of two CH-46 transport helicopters assigned the emergency medical evacuation of ten casualties from a Marine company which was heavily engaged in combat with a large North Vietnamese Army force near the village of My Hiep (3) in Quang Nam Province. Arriving over the designated area, he found that the wounded Marines were located in five separate positions scattered about the open rice paddies and that the proximity of the opposing forces precluded the delivery of suppressive fire by supporting aircraft. Undaunted by the extremely heavy volume of hostile fire directed at his aircraft, First Lieutenant Donovan fearlessly maneuvered into the precarious area, located the first group of casualties, skillfully executed a landing, and resolutely remained in his dangerously exposed position until all the casualties were embarked. With complete disregard for his own safety, he continued to brave the intense North Vietnamese small arms and automatic weapons fire as he boldly air-taxied his helicopter at low altitude across the rice paddies to each of the four other positions and succeeded in extracting all of the remaining casualties. By his courage, superior airmanship, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, First Lieutenant Donovan was instrumental in accomplishing the hazardous mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Dopko (0-79129), Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Ammunition Platoon Commander, Force Logistic Support Group, III Marine Amphibious Force, in the Republic of Vietnam. On 30 January 1966, At Ammunition Supply Point Number ONE, fire erupted on a truck carrying several hundred rounds of 81-mm. mortar ammunition, creating imminent danger of explosion. Reacting swiftly, Captain Dopko took a fire extinguisher and boarded the blazing vehicle, completely disregarding his own safety, but at the same time warning another man to stay away from the hazardous area. He steadfastly maintained his position, exchanging the extinguisher for a water hose as soon as fire truck equipment could be employed and assisted in fighting the blaze until the fire was out and the ammunition cooled to a degree where explosion was less likely. His unhesitating action in the face of extreme danger helped prevent a serious situation which, except for the swift measures that were taken, undoubtedly would have resulted in extensive loss of life and equipment. By his extraordinary heroism, brilliant initiative and unfaltering dedication to duty throughout, Captain Dopko upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Downing (2201839), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with the Third Platoon of Company E, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in the Republic of Vietnam, on 3 May 1967. While defending the hill complex south of Hill 881 North near Khe Sanh, Company E was attacked by a determined enemy force. Corporal Downing was ordered to move his fire team into the Second Platoon's sector. He skillfully and unhesitatingly maneuvered his men into the area of the enemy's deepest penetration controlling their fire power so that the enemy forward movement was halted. Although wounded in the leg during the initial contact, he continued to direct the fire and movement of his fire team with perception and without regard for his own personal safety, gaining fire superiority and forcing the enemy to withdraw. Refusing medical assistance, he ordered the corpsman to treat others around him while he provided covering fire. Courageously delivering continuous and effective fire upon the enemy forces, he steadfastly remained in his position as the enemy counter-attacked. Having ensured that the last wounded Marine was evacuated, he remained firing from his position. His body was found later with six of the enemy dead around his position. His daring devotion to duty and his selfless concern for his fellow Marines were an inspiration to all those around him. By his exceptional performance of duty and complete disregard for his own safety, Corporal Downing valiantly contributed to the success of the company's defense. His heroic initiative and courageous actions upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Drake (2385832), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his own life while serving as Radio Operator with 1st Platoon, Company H, Second Battalion, First Marine Regiment, FIRST Marine Division in action against North Vietnamese regular forces in Quang Nam Province, Republic of Viet Nam on 3 and 4 March, 1969. Corporal Drake voluntarily led a fire team-sized reactionary force from his platoon patrol base with the mission of reinforcing and supporting another squad from his platoon which had been ambushed by an unknown size North Vietnamese regular army unit. The squad leader of the beleaguered squad had been killed by enemy fire and the squad had suffered extensive wounded during the late night of March 3rd/early morning hours of March 4th, 1969. When the under strength platoon received a radio report of the incident from the beleaguered squad, the platoon commander, with only one squad available at his patrol base, called for volunteers to go to the aid of the ambushed squad. Corporal Drake, the most experienced NCO with the platoon and the platoon radio operator, immediately volunteered to lead the mission to help his fellow Marines. Even though there was no radio available to support his small unit and knowing the terrain and normal modus operandi of the North Vietnamese forces for trying to use a small unit as bait to draw out a reactionary force and then ambushing that reactionary force, Corporal Drake led his small unit to the area of the squad's position. En route, his small unit came under intense enemy small arms and hand grenade fire. Leading by example and repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire even though painfully wounded himself by hand grenade fragments, he fought his way through the enemy force to the beleaguered, which was huddled around the body of their fallen squad leader. He then organized them into defensive positions, used their radio to coordinate suppressive supporting fires and thereby enabled his small unit to repel the superior enemy force. Later that night, Corporal Drake was able to bring in a medical evacuation helicopter to remove the wounded. Refusing evacuation, even though painfully wounded himself, he continued the squad's mission and returned to his platoon patrol base at first light the next day. Among the numerous enemy bodies recovered the next day was the body of a North Vietnamese regular army senior officer. Through his extraordinary initiative, leadership, and inspiring valor in the face of superior enemy forces, Corporal Drake was personally responsible for undoubtedly saving the lives of the other members of the ambushed squad. Corporal Drake's extraordinary heroism, repeated acts of valor, and loyal devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

Dunn (0-96578), First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 18 August 1969 while serving as Senior Advisor to the First Battalion, 6th Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam. The battalion was conducting a combat sweep operation south of Quang Ngai City when contact was made with an estimated two companies of North Vietnamese main force troops. First Lieutenant Dunn immediately positioned himself with the ARVN Battalion Commander to offer his assistance in conducting the operation. Throughout the battle First Lieutenant Dunn directed air strikes and gun ships on automatic weapons positions with great accuracy in spite of constant exposure to intense enemy small arms fire. While directing the supporting arms, he and the Vietnamese Battalion Commander were taken under heavy fire from a creek bed approximately 50 meters from their position. Without hesitation and in complete disregard for his personal safety, First Lieutenant Dunn charged directly toward the enemy, firing as he ran. His selfless example of courage and valor was an inspiration to the Vietnamese soldiers and contributed significantly to their efforts to rout the enemy. First Lieutenant Dunn's conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to John Howard Dunn (0-59941), Lieutenant Colonel [then Major], U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while interned as a Prisoner of War in North Vietnam from December 1965 to October 1966. After his aircraft was shot down, Lieutenant Colonel Dunn evaded capture by the enemy in North Vietnam for six days. Once placed in a prison camp, the tenacity and indomitable spirit he showed during those six days became the trademark of his resolve. Lieutenant Colonel Dunn steadfastly refused to cooperate with his captors and was subjected to severe cruelties. Thwarting every attempt of the enemy to break his resistance, he gave his fellow prisoners an exemplary standard upon which to base their own conduct. Although Lieutenant Colonel Dunn aroused the fury of his captors by his resistance, the level of his courage and doggedness matched the increasing intensity of maltreatment levied upon him by the enemy, who ignored international agreements concerning the treatment of POW's. His resolve and determination provided the highest form of leadership and personal example. By his sheer determination and professionalism under the most adverse of conditions, Lieutenant Colonel Dunn displayed devotion not only to the United States but also to his fellow prisoners; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps, the Naval Service, and the United States Armed Forces.
