We believe that this index of Vietnam War recipients is 90% complete, though we continue to sort through records to identify late awards, as well as to compile additional information on the recipients (Rank/Unit/etc.) and their citations. The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to David F. Langley (2130678), Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with Company D, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the morning of 5 July 1968, during Operation SCOTLAND II, Sergeant Langley volunteered to accompany a small unit assigned to recover a Marine killed in a previous action near the Khe Sanh Combat Base. After advancing approximately 150 meters beyond the defensive perimeter, the unit was suddenly pinned down by heavy small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force entrenched in the surrounding terrain and sustained numerous casualties. Rapidly assessing the situation, Sergeant Langley unhesitatingly left his covered position, ran across the fire-swept terrain to the side of a wounded Marine and immediately administered first aid. Then, while delivering a heavy volume of suppressive fire, he assisted the injured man to a position of relative safety. Ignoring the intense North Vietnamese fire, he fearlessly returned across the hazardous area to assist five Marines pinned down in a bomb crater. After dressing the wounds of one casualty, he began leading the men to a more secure area when he was seriously wounded by sniper fire. Ignoring the pain of his own injury, he fearlessly continued his determined efforts, successfully guiding the Marines out of the perilous area. Subsequently, while attempting to assist other men to a relatively secure area, he was mortally wounded by a sudden burst of automatic weapons fire. His prompt and heroic actions inspired all who observed him and undoubtedly saved the lives of several of his fellow Marines. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Sergeant Langley upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Larry Eugene Lawrence (2307915), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Sub Unit #1, Headquarters Company, Regimental Landing Team TWENTY-SIX (Forward), Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 6 June 1967. Lance Corporal Lawrence was serving as Assistant Machine Gunner with a security force on Hill 950, north of Khe Sanh, when an enemy company of superior numbers attacked the vital radio relay position defended by eighteen men with rockets, mortars, grenades and small arms fire. Lance Corporal Lawrence and his team saw a rocket destroy a bunker to their left which was occupied by three men. His own bunker was overrun and enemy grenades seriously wounded his three other team members. They decided to try to make it to the main defensive position, while Lance Corporal Lawrence stayed back to cover for them. Upon seeing his men come under close range fire again, he completely disregarded his own safety as he stood up and drew fire away from the wounded men. He fired point blank at the oncoming enemy only a few meters away and temporarily drove them back, allowing his men to reach safety. While voluntarily exposing himself, he was hit by an explosive device and mortally wounded. By his selfless actions, he saved his comrades from almost certain death, and aided the small force to hold the vital position. Lance Corporal Lawrence's inspiring valor and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Lee (0-19340263), Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During a search and destroy operation on 23 November 1969, Second Lieutenant Lee observed twenty North Vietnamese Army soldiers moving through a tree line forward of his unit. The hostile soldiers, realized they had been detected, commenced retreating. Aware that the rugged terrain would make pursuit difficult and unwilling to allow the enemy to escape, Second Lieutenant Lee quickly began adjusting supporting Marine artillery fire upon all possible routes of egress, then, pinpointing a vantage point from which he could better observe the enemy movement, he rushed across the fire-swept terrain toward the possible observation post but was extensively wounded by fragments from an enemy mine before he could attain his objective. Aware of the possible presence of other explosive devices in the area, he valiantly refused to allow his companions to come to his aid and resolutely continued adjusting artillery fire on the enemy force until he succumbed to his wounds. By his courage, bold initiative, and selfless concern for his fellowmen, Second Lieutenant Lee inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.

Legas (0-104263), First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Marine Helicopter Squadron THREE HUNDRED SIXTY-FOUR (HMM-364), Marine Aircraft Group SIXTEEN (MAG-16), FIRST Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the evening of 1 June 1970, Fist Lieutenant Legas launched as Pilot aboard a CH-46 transport helicopter assigned the medical evacuation of several Marine casualties who had been extensively wounded by enemy mines. Arriving over the designated location, he hovered low to asses the situation and observed that when the tall elephant grass was parted by the downdraft from his rotor blades, the entire field was literally seeded with mines. Unwilling to risk additional casualties by allowing any member of his crew to walk about in the area, he conceived an imaginative plan whereby one of his men was lowered on a mechanical hoist to where each casualty lay, waited on the spot while the wounded man was lifted into the aircraft, and was then picked up and moved to the next stricken man. For approximately one hour this plan was utilized successfully. Fully aware that the slightest miscalculation on his part could drag a crewman or casualty in the grass and thus detonate other mines, resulting in additional injuries and possible damage to his helicopter causing it to crash land in the minefield. First Lieutenant Legas exercised to the fullest his superb aeronautical ability and with calm deliberation moved his transport slowly over the area, hovering over each casualty with complete steadiness. With the fall of darkness it was necessary for him to utilize his exterior lights both to aid his crewman in his examination of the casualties and to enable him to maintain terrain reference. By so doing, he thus became a vulnerable target for automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenade fire which enemy soldiers delivered at his aircraft from several different directions. Undaunted by this adversity and the low state of his fuel supply he steadfastly continued his determined efforts until all casualties had been embarked and he was able to direct the transport to the nearest medical facility at DaNang. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, First Lieutenant Legas was instrumental in completing the hazardous and lifesaving mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Little (1410063), Staff Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, Battalion Landing Team, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, on 16 December 1965. Staff Sergeant Little assumed command of his platoon due to the evacuation of the platoon commander. While on a search and destroy mission, Sergeant Little was called upon to rescue another platoon that had been ambushed. With skillful tactical maneuver and inspiring leadership, he cleared a Viet Cong ambush position, killing four enemy guerrillas, wounding one and capturing their weapons and equipment. Continuing the mission and with complete disregard for his own safety, he fearlessly guided his platoon across a bridge and fifty meters of exposed trail. His aggressive action and skillfully directed fire took the enemy by surprise, inflicted heavy damage and forced the enemy to withdraw. His effective actions throughout the day dealt severe blows to the enemy, with minimal Marine casualties, and were instrumental in the successful accomplishment of Operation HARVEST MOON.

Lockhart, Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Amphibious Tractor Driver, Headquarters and Service Company, Battalion Landing Team 2/4, NINTH Marine Amphibious Brigade in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the assault on the heavily fortified and well defended village of Mai Xa Chanh on 2 and 3 March 1968, the amphibious tractor he was driving came under heavy enemy fire seriously wounding the crew chief. He continued forward onto his objective as the enemy fire intensified. As he lowered the ramp to enable the assault troops to disembark, the enemy poured fire into and around the vehicle, wounding a number of Marines including Private First Class Lockhart. After all of the able bodied Marines had moved from the amphibious tractor to assault the enemy's positions, he attempted to raise the ramp and evacuate the wounded, however, a badly wounded Marine lay half off and half on the ramp. Despite his own wound and at great risk to his own life, Private First Class Lockhart crawled forward to the wounded Marine and dragged him into the vehicle. While moving the wounded Marine into the amphibious tractor, Private First Class Lockhart was wounded again by shrapnel and ricocheting bullets. Ignoring his own wounds, he raised the ramp and drove the amphibious tractor to a place of relative safety. Although he was one of the most seriously wounded Marines, he refused treatment until all of the other Marines were removed from the vehicle and treated. By his extraordinary heroism in the face of extreme dangers, unrelenting perseverance, and steadfast devotion to duty, Private First Class Lockhart reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service."

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Adrian Salome Lopez (2375936), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Third Force Reconnaissance Company, Third Reconnaissance Battalion, THIRD Marine Division (Reinforced), in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 16 February 1968, Private Lopez was a member of a reconnaissance patrol operating southeast of Con Thien when they made contact with several North Vietnamese soldiers and during the brief fire-fight, one Marine was wounded. Exposing himself to the enemy fire, Private Lopez provided covering fire while the corpsman administered first aid to the casualty. Subsequently, while moving to a helicopter landing zone to evacuate the casualty, the Marines suddenly came under intense automatic weapons fire from a numerically superior force and sustained three additional casualties. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private Lopez unhesitatingly directed a heavy volume of automatic rifle fire upon the hostile positions, attracting the attention and fire of the enemy away from the wounded. Moving to the side of a casualty, he ignored the enemy fire impacting around him and assisted in administering first aid. As a medical evacuation helicopter approached the landing site, he assisted a companion in moving a wounded man across forty meters of fire swept terrain to the helicopter. After embarking, he realized that three casualties were not aboard. With complete disregard for his own safety, he jumped from the helicopter in an attempt to rescue the injured men and was mortally wounded by a burst of enemy automatic weapons fire. His bold initiative and sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades were an inspiration to all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. By his courage, exceptional professionalism and steadfast devotion to duty, Private Lopez upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

On 19 September 1968, Company E was conducting a search and destroy operation in Quang Nam Province when the Marines came under a heavy volume of fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force occupying fortified positions. Reacting instantly, Corporal Lopez maneuvered his squad into an assault position and directed the fire of his men against the hostile emplacements. Alertly observing a North Vietnamese soldier preparing to fire on his comrades, Corporal Lopez fearlessly ran across the fire-swept terrain and, although armed with only two hand grenades, assaulted the enemy's position. After throwing a hand grenade which failed to kill or wound the hostile soldier, Corporal Lopez unhesitatingly leaped into the bunker as the North Vietnamese defender was about to fire upon him and killed the enemy soldier in a fierce hand-to-hand struggle. Continuing his determined efforts, he sighted several wounded Marines in an area exposed to the intense enemy fire. Ignoring the hostile rounds impacting near him, he boldly rushed across the hazardous area and assisted a wounded companion to a position of relative safety. While selflessly moving forward to the rescue of a second Marine, Corporal Lopez was mortally wounded. His bold initiative and sincere concern for the lives of his comrades inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his company's mission. Love (2383315), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company L, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 1 December 1968, during Operation Meade River, Company L was maneuvering across an open area when the Marines came under a heavy volume of sniper, mortar, and automatic weapons fire from a numerically superior hostile force occupying well-concealed emplacements. Separated from the main body of the company, Lance Corporal Love and several companions made repeated attempts to rejoin their unit but were halted by intense enemy fire. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, he left the relative safety of his covered position and fearlessly commenced crawling toward the command post. As he passed within a few meters of an enemy emplacement, he was seriously wounded by the detonation of a hand grenade and, ignoring his painful injuries, resolutely continued across the fire-swept terrain toward his objective. Upon reaching his platoon commander, Lance Corporal Love steadfastly refused medical attention and, having informed his commander of the tactical situation, began leading a reaction force through the hazardous area to his original position when he was seriously wounded by the explosion of an enemy rocket. By his exceptional courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unfaltering devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Love inspired all who served with him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Roger G. Lyons (2369478), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving, with Company E, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, Ninth Marine-Amphibious Brigade in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the morning of 9 February 196S, Private First Glass Lyons was a member of a reinforced squad conducting a patrol west of Camp J. J. Carroll, Suddenly, the Marines came under intense automatic weapons fire from a well concealed North Vietnamese Army force and, in the initial burst of fire, a wounded Marine fell in an area dangerously exposed to the hostile fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private First Class LYONS unhesitatingly left his position and ran to the side of the injured man. As enemy fire impacted around him, he fearlessly used his own body as a shield to protect the casualty and was mortally wounded. His heroic action and sincere concern for the welfare of his wounded companion were an inspiration to all who observed him. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Private First Class Lyons upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
