The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Roger L. Maki (2454323), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company L, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 12 January 1969, Lance Corporal Maki, then a Private First Class, was in the point position during a platoon-sized search and destroy operation in the An Hoa area when he observed on of the Marine scout dogs detect the possible presence of the enemy. Reacting instantly, he cautioned his companions and then fearlessly moved forward alone to investigate. Alertly locating a hostile ambush site, he unhesitatingly exposed himself to the danger of enemy fire as he boldly fired upon the North Vietnamese position. The enemy returned his fire, and although Lance Corporal Maki was seriously wounded, he steadfastly continued his determined efforts as he stood in full view of the hostile soldiers to direct his companions toward the ambush site. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in preventing the enemy form inflicting severe casualties upon his platoon. By his courage, resolute determination and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Lance Corporal Maki upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Howard Tapscott Manfra, Jr. (2096513), Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Antitank Assault Squad Leader with Company M, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 4 September 1967, Company M was conducting a search and destroy operation when the Marines came under a heavy volume of mortar and automatic weapons fire from a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. Reacting instantly, Sergeant MANFRA skillfully deployed his team in positions which gave them the most effective fields of fire into the camouflaged enemy emplacements. Then, exposing himself to the intense hostile fire, he unhesitatingly stood erect and alertly located two enemy emplacements. Seizing a 3.5 inch rocket launcher, he calmly fired one rocket which destroyed a North Vietnamese mortar position and killed four enemy soldiers. Despite sustaining a painful leg wound, he fearlessly stood up again and fired on a second target. Although wounded again, he resolutely continued his determined efforts to silence the hostile mortars by directing his team's fire as he lay critically wounded in his dangerously exposed position. While attempting to seek cover, he was struck by enemy fire, which rendered him unconscious. His bold initiative and heroic efforts inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of numerous Marines. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unfaltering devotion to duty in the face of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Stephen G. Marcombe (2303802), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as a Machine Gun Team Leader attached to the Second Platoon, Company M, Third Battalion, fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 2 June 1967. During Operation UNION II near Vinh Huy (3), Quang Tin Province, the Second Platoon, as point platoon for the company, came under intense enemy automatic weapons, small-arms and mortar fire from several concealed positions in a hedgerow surrounding the company objective. Lance Corporal Marcombe, without hesitation, skillfully moved his machine-gun team to the forward element of the Second Platoon and found a position commanding the terrain to his front. From this position he directed heavy and accurate fire into the enemy positions. He courageously exposed himself to continuous and massed enemy fire, in order to regain better observation and direct the fire of his machine-gun team, while demonstrating great skill in directing his team's fire. His actions directly resulted in the destruction of two enemy machine-gun positions. After two hours and forty-five minutes of continuous fire support and in the final drive for the company objective, Lance Corporal Marcombe was mortally wounded as he was aggressively maneuvering his gun forward to pinpoint an enemy machine-gun position. His efficiency and selfless devotion to duty inflicted heavy losses on the enemy and in large measure assisted his company in successfully seizing the objective. Lance Corporal Marcombe's actions throughout reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Anthony Henry Marengo (MCSN: 1692871), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces on 26 January 1967, in the Republic of Vietnam. During Operation TUSCALOOSA near An Hoa in Duc Duc District, Quang Nam Province, Staff Sergeant Marengo's company was crossing the Song Ba Ren River when it came under a heavy volume of enemy automatic weapons and mortar fire from the village of Le Nam on the opposite bank. Reacting instantly, he quickly and aggressively assisted in executing the river crossing. Approaching the village, his platoon came under intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire, temporarily pinning down the lead squad and causing numerous casualties. Displaying exceptional tactical skill, Staff Sergeant Marengo expeditiously aided in organizing his platoon to deliver effective fire on the enemy positions. Then, with complete disregard for his own safety, he advanced under heavy enemy fire to the lead squad and carried a mortally wounded fire team leader to a covered position. With dauntless courage and fearless determination, he again exposed himself to hostile fire to return to the point squad and lead it to a covered position where he reorganized the unit. Observing two wounded Marines, he assisted them to safety and obtained medical aid and evacuation. Throughout the encounter, his daring and heroic leadership, sound tactical skill and bold initiative were instrumental in defeating the numerically superior enemy force and in minimizing Marine casualties. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Richard Edward Maresco (0-82456), Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Company Commander of Company K, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam on 26 January 1967. While providing security for an engineer reconnaissance team during Operation DeSoto, the point platoon of Company K was temporarily pinned down by intense enemy fire from cement bunkers which were located across a nearby river. Because the platoon's elements had become separated, the unit was unable to gain fire superiority over the enemy forces. As the situation became worse and casualties began to increase, Captain Maresco left the headquarters group and joined the beleaguered point platoon. Immediately, he called for air strikes, naval gunfire and mortars on the entrenched enemy. Fearlessly, Captain Maresco continually exposed himself to hostile fire in order to adjust the delivery of supporting arms fire. Disregarding the heavy volume of automatic weapons fire directed at his position, he repeatedly raced across an open road to issue orders to the men on his left flank. During the ensuing six-hour fire fight, Captain Maresco continually moved from position to position, encouraging his men and directing their fire on the enemy. In addition, he intentionally exposed himself to enemy fire to direct the enemy's fire away from a medical evacuation team that was attempting to remove a wounded Marine. After the casualties had been evacuated, Captain Maresco organized an orderly tactical retrograde movement, remaining in his forward position to call in supporting fires until the point platoon had completely withdrawn from the trap. Only then did he return to the relative safety of the headquarters element. By his courageous fighting spirit, unfaltering devotion to duty and exceptional leadership, Captain Maresco upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Robert Paul Marsden (12404784), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company K, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 20 January 1971, Corporal Marsden's squad was pinned down by intense enemy fire from North Vietnamese Army soldiers occupying well-concealed emplacements in a tree line. Observing two wounded Marines fall in dangerous proximity to the enemy positions, Corporal Marsden unhesitatingly left his relative secure location behind a rice paddy dike and, with complete disregard for his own safety, ran across the hazardous terrain to the side of his companions. Using his own body as a shield for his comrades, he delivered intense fire into the tree line then, seemingly oblivious to the rounds impacting around him, he fearlessly dragged one of the stricken men to a covered location. Aware that the hostile fire had greatly increased, Corporal Marsden directed two of his fire teams to provide covering fire while a third executed an encircling movement around the tree line. However, realizing the dangerous position in which the second wounded man lay, he elected to rush to his aid before the maneuver was completed, but, when halfway to his objective, was seriously wounded by an enemy round. Resolutely determined to save his fellow Marine, he fought desperately to remain alert and, despite suffering extreme pain and loss of blood, continued to crawl toward his comrade until he succumbed to his wounds, just short of reaching the casualty. By his indomitable courage, selfless concern for his fellowman, an unfaltering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Corporal Marsden inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly have his life in the service of his country.

On 18 August 1968, Private First Class McAllister was attached to a provisional artillery battery which was occupying a defensive position northwest of Phu Loc in Thua Thien Province. During the early morning hours, the Marines came under a heavy volume of mortar and antitank rocket fire supporting a ground assault by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force utilizing automatic weapons, hand grenades and explosive devices. Although mortally wounded when two satchel charges exploded inside his bunker as the advancing enemy penetrated the defensive perimeter, Private First Class McAllister crawled over one hundred meters in all attempt to reach the battery aid station. Alertly observing two hostile soldiers attack a bunker containing several Marines, he selflessly exerted his remaining strength to deliver accurate fire, killing or wounding the North Vietnamese soldiers before they could hurl an explosive charge into the bunker. As a result of his heroic and timely actions, several Marines were saved from possible death or serious injury. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty, Private First Class McAllister inspired all who observed hint and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. On 11 September 1969, Company I was assaulting enemy positions in a tree line about one mile west of the An Hoa Combat Base when the Marines came under intense hostile small arms, machine gun, and automatic weapons fire. Fearlessly maneuvering his squad to within fifteen meters of the enemy positions, Private First Class McCann slowly began to advance toward the hostile force under the covering fire of an adjacent squad. Crawling forward alone, through both enemy and friendly fire, he reached the tree line and destroyed a hostile rifle position. Continuing into the tree line, he and one of his men managed to silence an enemy rocket-propelled grenade position before Private First Class McCann was wounded. Undaunted, he valiantly rushed a machine gun position and killed the enemy machine gunner in hand-to-hand combat. Then, despite his painful injury, he returned to the edge of the tree line, brought his squad into it and secured the right flank, enabling the Marines to overrun the remaining hostile positions. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in the defeat of the enemy force. Late on the morning of 16 May 1968, while participating in a search and destroy operation near the Khe Sanh Combat Base, elements of Company K suddenly came under a heavy volume of small arms fire from several North Vietnamese soldiers occupying a defensive position on top of a hill. Although painfully wounded during the initial moments of the fire fight, Sergeant McClain resolutely continued to move about the hazardous area, encouraging his men and skillfully directing their fire against the hostile emplacements. When ordered to withdraw so that supporting arms could be employed against the enemy, he skillfully maneuvered his Marines to an advantageous position and calmly moved among his men, ensuring that they were preparing for an assault on the hostile soldiers. When the supporting arms fir ceased, Sergeant McClain unhesitatingly moved forward, and although his weapon malfunctioned, he led his men in a determined assault upon the North Vietnamese positions. Ignoring the hostile rounds impacting near him, he maneuvered his men up the hill while throwing hand grenades at the hostile emplacements, and as he exposed himself to the accurate enemy fire, he was mortally wounded. His bold initiative and heroic actions inspired all who observed him and contributed immeasurably to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. By his courage, aggressive leadership and steadfast devotion to duty, Sergeant McClain upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

On 7 April 1968, Company G was assaulting a large North Vietnamese Army force occupying fortified positions on Hill 700 near the Khe Sanh Combat Base when the Marines suddenly came under a heavy volume of small arms and mortar fire and sustained numerous casualties. Reacting instantly, Lance Corporal McCormick expeditiously maneuvered his squad to a position dangerously exposed to the enemy fire in order to provide security for the company's left flank. Ignoring the hostile rounds impacting near him, he repeatedly advanced across the fire-swept terrain while assisting casualties through the intense enemy fire to covered positions. Disregarding his own safety, he aggressively assaulted hostile bunkers on two occasions and was instrumental in destroying the enemy emplacements. Later that day, he boldly took charge of his platoon and, shouting words of encouragement to his men, skillfully directed them in an orderly withdrawal to the relative safety of the battalion perimeter. His timely and heroic actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of several fellow Marines. During a company size search and clear operation near the Demilitarized Zone on 28 November 1966, Second Lieutenant McCourt's platoon observed three enemy soldiers leaving the area. Quickly assuming the point position of the company, the platoon had started across a large open rice paddy in pursuit of the enemy when the unit received intense automatic weapons fire from an estimated platoon of North Vietnamese Regulars concealed in positions 100 meters from the Marines. With complete disregard for his own safety, Second Lieutenant McCourt unhesitatingly dashed to the center of his platoon, under withering enemy automatic weapons fire, and fired tracers into the enemy positions to mark the targets for his men. Continuing to expose himself to the heavy enemy fire, he steadfastly remained in this position to direct and encourage his platoon. Simultaneously, he observed a Marine fall, wounded, during an attempt to rescue a casualty from the line of enemy fire. Fearlessly, he ran to the disable Marines and, with the help of a companion, succeeded in pulling both men to safety. His daring and heroic actions undoubtedly prevented the enemy form overrunning his unit and saved the lives of the wounded men. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to James Russell McElroy, Jr. (0-80235), Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company M, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 13 May 1967, during Operation Union, Captain McElroy displayed exceptional professional skill and heroism when he led his 142 man company to relieve a beleaguered unit which had sustained heavy casualties from a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. After arriving in the area, the company came under intense fire and in the initial moments of the attack, Captain McElroy was wounded in the shoulder by machine gun fire. Refusing medical aid and ignoring his painful wound, he unhesitatingly supervised the evacuation of the other casualties, skillfully directed effective suppressive fire on the hostile positions and then maneuvered his men into a night defensive position. At midnight, when the units again came under intense mortar fire followed by a ground attack, Captain McElroy, disregarding his own safety and constantly exposing himself to the heavy fire, calmly and aggressively directed reaction forces and supporting arms fire throughout the night until the assault had been repelled. After the attack, he personally supervised the expeditious evacuation of casualties, including a wounded enemy soldier and only after all the other wounded had received aid and had been evacuated and the mission successfully accomplished did he allow treatment of his wounds and subsequent evacuation. During a search on the following morning, over 120 enemy dead were counted and a large quantity of weapons, ammunition and other abandoned equipment were seized. His superior leadership and concern for the welfare of his men were an inspiration to all who served with him. By his outstanding professionalism, uncommon courage and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Captain McElroy upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

McGee (2231850), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company M, Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Reinforced), in connection with operations in the Republic of Vietnam. Late on the afternoon of 9 May 1968, Corporal McGee was a member of a patrol which fired on and wounded a North Vietnamese soldier near the Company M defensive position in Quang Tri Province. When the enemy soldier fled into the dense foliage, a fire team commenced searching the area and immediately came under intense hostile fire, which wounded one of the Marines. Observing that several other men were wounded in an attempt to reach the injured man who lay exposed to enemy fire, Corporal McGee completely disregarded his own safety and fearlessly ran to assist the casualty to a position of relative security. Seriously wounded and knocked to the ground by hostile fire, he ignored his own painful injury and continued to advance toward his fallen comrade until he was mortally wounded by enemy fire. By his courage, bold initiative, and selfless devotion to duty at the risk of his own life, Corporal McGee upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

McKim (2058209), Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company D, Third Military Police Battalion, Force Logistic Command, THIRD Marine Amphibious Force, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During early morning hours of 31 January 1968, a military compound in Quang Tri City suddenly came under heavy mortar, recoilless rifle, small arms, and automatic weapons fire from two battalions of North Vietnamese Army regulars. As the Noncommissioned Officer in Charge of the compound's Marine Security Detachment, Sergeant McKim responded immediately and completely disregarded his own safety as he exposed himself to intense hostile fire to direct and adjust accurate 81-mm. mortar fire against enemy positions approximately 100 meters from the compound. During the attack he was wounded by hostile mortar fragments but continued to direct return fire against the North Vietnamese. Upon hearing cries for assistance from the injured, he ignored the enemy fire around him and unhesitatingly moved to the side of the casualties where he assisted in evacuating them from the hazardous area. Anticipating the possibility of a ground assault by the North Vietnamese Army force, he directed his mortar crews to continue their fire and maneuvered across the hazardous terrain to the sector of the perimeter which had suffered the most casualties. Displaying exceptional leadership and calm composure under fire, he reorganized the defensive positions and moved among his men, encouraging them and ensuring that adequate ammunition was available. Subsequently, he was mortally wounded when a North Vietnamese mortar round exploded within five meters of his position. By his courageous leadership, bold initiative, and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Sergeant McKim inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Robert McMullin (2447184), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company L, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the afternoon of 12 May 1969, Company L was conducting a search and destroy operation when the Marines came under intense fire from a hostile force entrenched in a tree line. Reacting instantly, Lance Corporal McMullin began maneuvering his squad toward an enemy bunker complex in an effort to silence the hostile fire which had pinned down an adjacent platoon and was causing numerous casualties. As he fearlessly led his men toward the objective, the squad came under a heavy volume of enemy fire, and two of his men were seriously wounded. Immediately delivering return fire upon the hostile force, he thereby enabled the remainder of his men to take cover. Realizing that his squad members were unable to advance across the fire-swept terrain, Lance Corporal McMullin, boldly disregarding the enemy rounds impacting around him, threw several grenades into the hostile emplacements and temporarily silenced the hostile fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, he then crawled over a dike and out into an area dangerously exposed to the enemy and pulled one Marine casualty to safety. Repeating his courageous act a second time, he evacuated another Marine, and on the third time, he retrieved a radio which was necessary for his unit's communication during the fire fight. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were responsible for saving the life of a seriously wounded comrade. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Lance Corporal McMullin upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Melton, Jr. (1434949), Gunnery Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Company Gunnery Sergeant of Company G, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours of 1 June 1969, while participating in Operation VIRGINIA RIDGE in northern Quang Tri Province, Company G Came under a heavy volume of mortar and small arms fire. The withering fire raked through the lines of the Third Platoon, causing numerous casualties, including the key leadership personnel. Unhesitatingly leaving his relatively secure rear position, Gunnery Sergeant Melton fearlessly rushed across two hundred meters of fire-swept terrain to the forward area. Displaying superb tactical ability and vast composure under the intense fire, he shouted encouragement and directions to the Marines there as he took charge of the platoon and rallied the momentarily disoriented men. Seemingly oblivious to the enemy rounds impacting around him, he then led an aggressive counterattack against the hostile positions, an action which also deployed the beleaguered platoon out of the dangerous mortar impact area. On three separate occasions during the course of the assault, he completely disregarded his own safety to carry critically wounded men through the dangerous area to covered locations, thereby saving them from further injury or possible death. Under his inspiring leadership, the platoon maintained the vigor and momentum of the attack, defeating the North Vietnamese Army infantrymen and killing ten of the enemy soldiers. By his courage, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Gunnery Sergeant Melton turned a potentially disastrous situation into a Marine victory. His determination and aggressive fighting spirit in the face of great personal danger inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Messer (0-108392), Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company L, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the evening of 13 September 1969, Second Lieutenant Messer's platoon was the point element for Company L when the Marines came under intense fire from a reinforced squad of North Vietnamese Army soldiers concealed in well-fortified bunkers located on high ground to the Marines' front. The initial burst of automatic weapons fire, which killed the company executive officer and painfully wounded Second Lieutenant Messer was immediately followed by numerous concussion grenades which kept the platoon pinned down and unable to return fire. On two separate occasions, Second Lieutenant Messer attempted to rise and assess the situation and was knocked down by the concussion of the exploding grenades. Immediately following the grenades, the enemy began firing 82-mm. mortar rounds on the company, severely wounding the company commander. Fearlessly disregarding the enemy fire, Second Lieutenant Messer assumed command of the company, organized an assault force, and courageously attacked the enemy position atop the hill. Shouting encouragement to his men and firing at the enemy he led the assault, he inspired his men and succeeded in routing the enemy form their position. After ensuring the consolidation of the objective, he organized and directed the evacuation of the wounded, and refusing evacuation himself, directed continuous air support throughout the remainder of the night, denying the enemy the opportunity to launch a counterattack. By his heroic imitative, aggressive leadership, and unwavering devotion to duty at great personal risk, Second Lieutenant Messer upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

When his platoon was pinned down during a reserve operation in the vicinity of Tam Ky, Second Lieutenant Meyer single-handedly and without regard for his own safety attacked a series of enemy automatic weapon positions with hand grenades. Though continuously exposed to intense and accurate enemy fire, he successfully destroyed one of the enemy positions. Again exposing himself to the enemy, he attempted to maneuver to a location from which to direct supporting arms fire on the other enemy positions. While attempting to direct fire on a fleeing enemy, he exposed himself to an enemy sniper and was mortally wounded. Second Lieutenant Meyer's supreme sacrifice so inspired the rest of his men that they regained the momentum of the attack, successfully eliminated the enemy resistance, and accomplished the rescue mission saving the lives of thirteen other Marines. By his bold and courageous actions he upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the cause of freedom.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Albert Moguel (2384561), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 30 march 1968, during Operation SCOTLAND, Company B was engaged in patrol activities near the Khe Sanh Combat Base, when the lead elements came under intense mortar and automatic weapons fire from a well entrenched, numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force, temporarily pinning down the Marines and causing several casualties. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private First Class Moguel completely disregarded his own safety as he unhesitatingly ran across the fire-swept terrain and aggressively assaulted two hostile bunkers. Upon reaching the fortified emplacements, he quickly killed our of the enemy with his pistol and successfully silenced the fire from both positions, enabling his unit to continue the attack. Subsequently wounded during a heavy North Vietnamese mortar barrage, he ignored his painful injuries as he resolutely remained behind to provide highly effective covering fire while the wounded were being evacuated. Only after all the casualties had been moved to positions of relative safety, would he allow himself to be medically evacuated. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to his unit accounting for 115 North Vietnamese soldiers confirmed killed. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Private First Class Moguel upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Morgan (2243845), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Messenger with Company M, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 30 April 1967, in the vicinity of Khe Sanh, Quang Tri Province, while conducting an extensive search and destroy operation. Company M was assigned the mission of securing Hill 881, a strategic terrain feature commanding the northern approaches into the Khe Sanh complex. As the assault approached the crest of the hill, Company M became subjected to intense enemy fire from heavily defended strongly-fortified enemy emplacements. A high volume of small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire inflicted casualties upon the advancing Marines and temporarily halted forward movement in the subsequent bitterly contested engagement, ever increasing in intensity, ammunition supply decreased to a critical shortage. Heedless of his own safety, Lance Corporal Morgan courageously exposed himself to a high volume of enemy fire to advance forward to collect ammunition. Although painfully wounded in the shoulder, he relentlessly continued in his quest to complete his task of collecting additional ammunition and distributing it among his platoon. Repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire, Lance Corporal Morgan sustained a second injury, a critical leg wound which prohibited his standing or walking. Seeking safety from his exposed position, he crawled to a crater, in close proximity to the enemy, and proceeded to deliver accurate, effective fire against the enemy. Lying in an extremely hazardous position after his ammunition was depleted, he was attacked by an enemy soldier and mortally wounded. By his outstanding courage, exceptional fortitude and valiant fighting spirit, Lance Corporal Morgan served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

On 30 March 1968, during Operations Scotland, Company B was engaged in patrol activities near the Khe Sanh Combat Base, when the lead elements came under intense small arms and automatic weapons fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force occupying well concealed bunkers and trenches. Realizing his unit was being pinned down by the enemy fire, Private First Class Morrison completely disregarded his own safety as he fearlessly rushed across the fire-swept terrain and aggressively assaulted the hostile positions. Firing into the apertures and throwing numerous hand grenades into each bunker as he reached it, he successfully silenced the fire from several emplacements, enabling his company to resume its advance until ordered to withdraw. Undaunted by the heavy volume of hostile fire, he resolutely remained in a dangerously exposed position and provided highly effective suppressive fire while his comrades evacuated the wounded. His bold initiative and resolute determination inspired all who observed him and contributed immeasurably to his unit accounting for 115 North Vietnamese soldiers confirmed killed. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Private First Class Morrison upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Morrow (1136878), Gunnery Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as the Gunnery Sergeant with Company M, Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 21 July 1967. Gunnery Sergeant Morrow was engaged as a member of a company search and destroy operation against North Vietnamese Army elements. The point platoon came under extremely heavy automatic and semiautomatic weapons fire from an estimated reinforced North Vietnamese Army platoon. Upon receiving word that the platoon commander, platoon sergeant, and one squad leader had become casualties, Gunnery Sergeant Morrow immediately volunteered to take command of the first platoon. Moving forward under extremely intense enemy fire, he reached the unit and assumed command. With full knowledge of the hazards involved, and with complete disregard for his own safety, he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire while directing the fight and supervising removal of the casualties to a helicopter landing zone for evacuation. Moving from man to man, he inspired his men with dynamic leadership and courageous fighting spirit until he was mortally wounded. As a result of his daring actions and loyal devotion to duty, many Marine lives were saved. Gunnery Sergeant Morrow's outstanding and selfless efforts in behalf of others served to inspire all who observed him and to uphold the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

On 18 May 1968 during Operation Allen Brook, elements of Companies L and M were pinned down by machine gun, automatic weapons and small arms fire from well concealed, fortified and mutually supporting North Vietnamese Army positions in a tree line. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Lance Corporal Much quickly moved to the point of heaviest contact and, standing in the open exposed to hostile fire, began delivering 3.5 inch rockets into the enemy positions. Ignoring the enemy fire all around him, he steadfastly maintained his position in the hazardous area until he had expended all of his ammunition. Obtaining a resupply, he then continued to deliver a heavy volume of accurate fire on the enemy fortifications, sufficiently suppressing hostile fire to enable the beleaguered Marines to move to positions of safety. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Lance Corporal Much was instrumental in the subsequent defeat of the enemy and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Mortar Section, Company L, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 31 July 1968, during Operation Mameluke Thrust, Company L became heavily engaged with a large enemy force while occupying a night defensive position in Quang Nam Province. As his mortar squad prepared for a fire mission, a hostile hand grenade suddenly landed next to Private First Class Murphy. Realizing the danger to his companions, he unhesitatingly retrieved the lethal object and hurled it toward the hostile soldiers. Although the grenade detonated only seconds after being thrown, Private First Class Murphy's quick action and sincere concern for his fellow Marines prevented his squad from sustaining any casualties. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, Private First Class Murphy upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Walter M. Murphy (0-75028), Major, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Operations Officer of the First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 31 January 1968. Major Murphy was in command of a provisional unit assigned to reinforce the Military Assistance Command Headquarters in Hue and attempt to rescue a general officer of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam near the Citadel. As his unit moved along in a truck convoy from Phu Bai, they were taken under intense enemy automatic weapons, recoilless rifle, mortar, and anti-tank rocket fire. Major Murphy moved forward through the intense enemy fire and reorganized the convoy and directed its movement into Hue. Upon entering Hue, the Marines were once again attacked and Major Murphy moved forward to encourage his men and maintain their forward movement. Once inside the Military Assistance Command compound, he organized and secured a landing zone for the medical evacuation of the wounded. As the lead elements of moved toward the landing zone, it was once again taken under recoilless rifle and machine gun fire from positions across the Perfume River. Major Murphy dashed across the fire swept terrain and directed the fire of the tanks on the enemy positions and then returned to his men and directed their fire. After securing the bridge, Major Murphy moved his unit to the other side where they were once again taken under intense enemy fire, wounding several Marines. He again moved forward to assess the situation. When trucks arrived to evacuate the wounded he assisted in placing the casualties aboard the vehicles. Suddenly an enemy mortar round impacted near his position and he was mortally wounded. By his bold initiative, gallant fighting spirit, and loyal devotion to duty, Major Murphy reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Myers (2349067), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Grenadier with Company M, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 10 November 1968, Company M was participating in a search and destroy operation west of Con Thien when the Marines came under an intense hostile rocket attack, during which Lance Corporal Myers was seriously wounded. As he and the other injured men were being prepared for medical evacuation, he alertly discovered a smoking mortar round lying in their midst. Reacting instantly, he ignored his painful wounds and unhesitatingly picked up the red-hot mortar round. Completely disregarding his own safety, he then fearlessly carried it a safe distance from his comrades. His heroic and timely actions resulted in severe burns to his hands, but saved his companions from additional serious injury or possible death. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Lance Corporal Myers inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
