Sawyer (2374130), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron THREE HUNDRED SIXTY-FOUR (HMM-364), Marine Aircraft Group SIXTEEN (MAG-16), FIRST Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the evening of 21 October 1969, Corporal Sawyer launched as Crew Chief aboard the lead aircraft in a flight of two CH-46 transport helicopters assigned the mission of inserting an eleven-man reaction force to reinforce a seven-man Marine reconnaissance team which had sustained five casualties while heavily engaged in combat with a numerically superior hostile force approximately twenty-one miles southwest of DaNang. When extremely adverse weather conditions prevented the insertion, he alertly observed and reported the position of other aircraft in the area and encouraged the passengers aboard his CH-46 during the seven hours his helicopter orbited the area while awaiting the clouds to dissipate enough to permit a landing. At that time, the weather had cleared sufficiently to enable another aircraft to insert an eight-man reconnaissance team which, shortly after landing, sustained six casualties. Undaunted by the intensity of the enemy automatic weapons fire directed at his CH-46, Corporal Sawyer calmly and skillfully provided a continuous flow of vital clearance information which enabled his pilot to avoid obstacles in the area and maneuvered to a landing. After the reaction force debarked, he completely disregarded his own safety as he boldly left his aircraft and fearlessly moved across the hazardous area infested with enemy mines to assist in carrying the six wounded Marines to his helicopter. After he provided clearance data as his pilot lifted out of the perilous zone, his aircraft proceeded to the medical facility at DaNang. Upon his return to the beleaguered Marines, Corporal Sawyer ignored the extremely heavy volume of hostile fire as he expertly provided precise clearance data during several approaches to the ground unit before he located an opening in the thick cloud cover and guided his CH-46 to a landing. For a second time, he left the relative safety of his aircraft as he valiantly braved the enemy fire and boldly moved on repeated trips across the heavily mined area to aid in carrying the remaining five casualties to his helicopter and placing them aboard. His aircraft then departed the perilous are for DaNang. By his courage, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Corporal Sawyer was instrumental in saving the lives of several of his fellow Marines and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service."

Scalici (2377322), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company L, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 6 May 1968, the Third Battalion was conducting a search and destroy operation south of the Con Thien Combat Base when the lead squad suddenly came under intense automatic weapons fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force. Alertly observing an enemy machine gun, Lance Corporal Scalici fearlessly assaulted the hostile emplacement, delivering a heavy volume of fire and throwing hand grenades until the North Vietnamese position was silenced. Disregarding his own safety, he boldly continued to advance, and seizing he hostile weapon, he utilized it against the enemy force, enabling five of his comrades to join him. When the Marines again came under intense automatic weapons fire, he repeatedly exposed himself while delivering suppressive fire and throwing hand grenades, forcing the enemy machine gun crew to flee in panic and confusion. Ordered to withdraw his men, he steadfastly remained behind while providing covering fire, enabling the Marines to evacuate their casualties and reach the relative safety of their platoon's position. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Lance Corporal Scalici upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star Medal to Dennis F. Scalici (2377322), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader Company L, Third Battalion, Third Marines, Third Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 26 August 1968, while occupying a night defensive position near Dong Ha, company L came under a heavy volume of artillery and recoilless rifle fire supporting ground assault by a large North Vietnamese Army force. A friendly listening post, which had sustained a casualty during the initial moments of the firefight, was returning to the perimeter. Upon learning about the situation, Corporal Scalici, then a Lance Corporal fearlessly exposed himself to enemy fire as he maneuvered across the hazardous terrain to assist the wounded mean. Alertly observing an enemy hand grenade land dangerously close to his position, Corporal Scalici unhesitatingly threw his body across that of his wounded comrade, shielding him from further injury. Although painfully wounded by the exploding hostile grenade, Corporal Scalici resolutely returned to his Fire Team and continued to direct his men in the defense of his sector of the company perimeter until directly ordered to withdraw for treatment of his wounds. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the life of a fellow Marine. By his courage, bold initiative and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Corporal Scalici upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Michael J. Scanlon (2136902), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Detachment, Third Force Reconnaissance Battalion, THIRD Marine Division, during operations against the enemy in Vietnam. On the night of 17 January 1967, Corporal Scanlon, as a member of a seven-man reconnaissance patrol, was flown by helicopter deep into enemy-controlled territory, with the mission of locating enemy infiltration routes. Throughout the night, the Marines heard sounds of enemy activity. At dawn on 18 January, the patrol moved to an observation point where a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army patrol of approximately forty men was sighted moving toward their position. Assigned the responsibility of providing security for the patrol's flank, Corporal Scanlon quickly moved to his defensive position where he was observed by the approaching enemy. Demonstrating exceptional presence of mind, he warned his companions and immediately opened fire at the lead man of the North Vietnamese unit. His continued to bring effective fire to bear on the advancing enemy although wounded twice as the North Vietnamese moved to within fifteen meters of his position. Exhibiting exemplary courage and aggressive fighting spirit despite his painful wounds and the intense enemy fire directed at him, Corporal Scanlon maintained his position and halted the enemy's attempts to dislodge the patrol's flank security. When an enemy hand grenade landed within the patrol's defensive perimeter Corporal Scanlon, with complete disregard for his own safety, valiantly attempted to recover the grenade but was mortally wounded. By his extraordinary courage, bold initiative, and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Scanlon undoubtedly saved the lives of several Marines, inspired all those who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Peter A. Schrader (2265855), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Radio Operator with Company M, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division (Reinforced), in the Republic of Vietnam on 7 November 1967. During Operation ESSEX, in Quang Nam Province, Corporal Schrader's platoon came under heavy fire from a North Vietnamese Army force which mortally wounded the platoon commander and pinned down the remainder of the unit in a rice paddy. Quickly assessing the situation, Corporal Schrader radioed the company command group for instructions and deployed his men. With complete disregard for his own safety, he exposed himself to the hostile fire as he maneuvered his men out of the rice paddy and led them to friendly positions. Resuming its mission, the following day, the platoon was once again taken under devastating enemy mortar and small arms fire while moving across a rice paddy. The newly assigned platoon commander was mortally wounded and Corporal Schrader assumed command and positioned his weapons to provide suppressive fire as he directed his men to cover. Despite a painful wound, he courageously directed his men toward the company perimeter and maintained communications. While exposing himself to the intense enemy fire to gain better communication, he was mortally wounded. By his bold initiative, gallant fighting spirit and loyal devotion to duty, Corporal Schrader was instrumental in saving his men from further injury or possible death thereby upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Shankey (1863529), Gunnery Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Marine Light Helicopter Squadron ONE HUNDRED SIXTY-SEVEN (HML-167), Marine Aircraft Group SIXTEEN (MAG-16), FIRST Marine Aircraft Wing, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the night of 28 March 1971, Gunnery Sergeant Shankey launched as Night Observation Device Operator aboard a UH-1E Huey helicopter equipped with infrared and spotlight equipment and assigned the mission of supporting a company-sized defense force which was heavily engaged in combat with two North Vietnamese Army battalions in the village of Duc Duc, twenty miles southwest of DaNang. Most of the village was ablaze following a heavy enemy mortar barrage and sapper attack. The friendly force was isolated and surrounded in its defensive perimeter by a large hostile force which was preparing to assault and overrun the Vietnamese position. Arriving over the beleaguered village, Gunnery Sergeant Shankey, undaunted by the extremely heavy volume of hostile fire concentrated upon his aircraft each time he activated his spotlight, carefully selected groups of the enemy with his light, sometimes to within thirty meters of the perimeter wire, and boldly maintained his light focused on the North Vietnamese, while supporting Cobra gunships attacked the enemy positions. On one occasion, when his Huey came under intense heavy machine gun fire and his aircraft had to life into the low cloud cover to escape the tracking fire, Gunnery Sergeant Shankey quickly located the machine gun emplacement when his helicopter descended through the overcast, and immediately pinpointed its position with his light for attacks by the supporting aircraft which destroyed the emplacement. Throughout the engagement he resolutely ignored the North Vietnamese fire concentrated upon his spotlight as he expertly illuminated the enemy force for attacks by the gunships which repulsed the North Vietnamese assault and forced the hostile soldiers to withdraw completely disorganized. After his aircraft had refueled and returned to the embattled village, he located and illuminated six boats upon which the North Vietnamese were attempting to escape across a nearby river. The Cobras destroyed all six boats. While his aircraft was orbiting the area to seek out stragglers, Gunnery Sergeant Shankey was seriously wounded when the Huey was struck by hostile rounds and was immediately flown to the nearest medical facility. By his courage, superior professionalism, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Gunnery Sergeant Shankey upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Michael Ernest Singer (2367488), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Artillery Forward Observer with Company D, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 5 July 1968, Private First Class Singer was manning an observation post at the Company D defensive position on Hill 689 in the vicinity of Khe Sanh when a patrol moved forward of the perimeter. Advancing approximately 100 meters, the patrol suddenly came under intense automatic weapons fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force and sustained numerous casualties. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private First Class Singer unhesitatingly left his covered position and ran across the fire-swept area where he began assisting the wounded to the relative safety of the perimeter. Undaunted by the accurate hostile fire impacting around him, he repeatedly moved forward and assisted in evacuating his wounded comrades to covered positions. Although wounded twice, he refused to be medically evacuated in order to remain with his besieged company. On the night of 7 July, the enemy launched an intensive barrage of automatic weapons and mortar fire on his company's position. Concerned only for the welfare of his comrades, Private First Class Singer fearlessly exposed himself to enemy fire as he carried wounded Marines to positions of relative safety. While assisting a casualty to a more covered area, Private First Class Singer was mortally wounded by the enemy fire. His heroic actions and sincere concern for the safety of his comrades inspired all who observed him and undoubtedly saved the lives of several Marines. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Private First Class Singer upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Dale Elroy Skoglund (2310907), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Team Leader with Company D, Third Reconnaissance Battalion, Third Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours of 17 January 1969, Corporal Skoglund and his reconnaissance team were occupying a night ambush site near the Cua Viet River when the Marines detected sounds of hostile movement near the bank of the river. After deploying his men to a more effective position, Corporal Skoglund observed two North Vietnamese Army soldiers at the edge of the water and directing his men to fire, caused one enemy soldier to be wounded and the other to flee. Having secured the prisoner, he was leading a search for the missing North Vietnamese when the Marines came under small arms fire and a hand grenade attack. As the team rapidly engaged the enemy, three hostile soldiers were wounded and two others fled. With complete disregard for his own safety, Corporal Skoglund unhesitatingly pursued the enemy and killed them. Returning to his squad, he alertly detected another hostile soldier, and when he fired upon and killed the man, a grenade concealed on the North Vietnamese Army soldier exploded, wounding Corporal Skoglund in the head. Ignoring his painful injury, he steadfastly refused to be medically evacuated and when a reaction force arrived, he resolutely acted as Point Man while it conducted a thorough search of the area. By his courage, bold initiative and unfaltering devotion to duty at great personal risk, Corporal Skoglund inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

On the morning of 27 May 1968, while conducting a search and destroy operation, Company K became heavily engaged with a North Vietnamese Army battalion occupying well-entrenched emplacements on Goi Noi Island in Quang Nam Province. As Lieutenant Smith led his men in an aggressive assault upon the enemy positions, the North Vietnamese force launched a determined counterattack, supported by mortars, on the Marines' left flank. Unhesitatingly rushing through the intense hostile fire to the position of heaviest contact, Lieutenant Smith fearlessly removed several casualties from the hazardous area and, shouting words of encouragement to his men, directed their fire upon the advancing enemy soldiers, successfully repulsing the hostile attack. Moving boldly across the fire-swept terrain to an elevated area, he calmly disregarded repeated North Vietnamese attempts to direct upon him as he skillfully adjusted artillery fire and air strikes upon the hostile positions to within fifty meters of his own location and continued to direct the movement of his unit. Accurately assessing the confusion that supporting arms was causing among the enemy soldiers, he raced across the fire-swept terrain to the right flank of his company and led an enveloping attack on the hostile unit's weakest point, routing the North Vietnamese unit and inflicting numerous casualties. His aggressive tactics and calm presence of min under fire inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in his unit accounting for the capture of two hostile soldiers as well as numerous documents and valuable items of equipment. On 11 September 1969, Company I was assaulting enemy positions in a tree line about one mile west of the An Hoa Combat Base when the Marines came under intense small arms, machine gun, and automatic weapons fire. Fearlessly maneuvering his squad to within fifteen meters of the enemy positions, Lance Corporal Smith directed his men to provide covering fire for an adjacent squad which was moving into the tree line. Although he and his squad members were pinned down by hostile fire, he single handedly advanced toward an enemy machine gun position and, in the face of a heavy volume of hostile fire, rushed the position, throwing grenades and firing his rifle. With his last hand grenade, Lance Corporal Smith killed two enemy soldiers, then, as a third soldier approached the machine gun, he killed the hostile soldier, utilizing the last of his rifle ammunition. Quickly rearming himself with enemy grenades he found at the machine gun position, Lance Corporal Smith valiantly moved into the tree line. After silencing another hostile position and killing one more enemy soldier with the enemy grenades, he led his squad through the tree line and secured the left flank, enabling the Marines to overrun their objective. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in the defeat of the hostile force. On 20 February 1968, on Hill 881S near Khe Sanh, Corporal Smith observed a Marine helicopter landing in a zone on which he knew North Vietnamese Army gunners had registered heavy mortars. He realized that the aircraft would almost certainly be destroyed if it remained in the landing zone, and attempted unsuccessfully to contact the pilot by radio. Aware that the enemy rounds were probably already on the way, he restrained a Marine junior to him from going out on to the zone, and leaving the safety of his bunker ran across the open ground signaling manually to the helicopter crew to take off immediately. As the helicopter took off and before Corporal Smith could reach cover, he was fatally wounded by mortar fragments, gallantly sacrificing his life so that the crew might live. By his extraordinary courage in the face of overwhelming odds, his uncommon concern for others, and his self-sacrificing efforts, Corporal Smith reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

On 6 June 1968, while conducting a patrol southeast of Con Thien, a platoon from Company E suddenly came under an intense automatic weapons and hand grenade attack from a well entrenched North Vietnamese Army force and sustained numerous casualties. Observing that the wounded men lay in positions dangerously exposed to hostile fire, Private First Class Staggs volunteered to assist in moving them to a covered area. After aiding a companion in carrying a mortally wounded Marine into a bomb crater, he quickly realized that the intense fire from an enemy sniper prevented the other casualties from being evacuated. Seizing a machine gun, he unhesitatingly left his concealed position, and accompanied by another Marine, rushed across the fire-swept area and returned with an injured man. When his companion was mortally wounded, Private First Class Staggs immediately retrieved the radio carried by the man and established communications with an aerial observer. Although inexperienced in medical evacuation procedures, he quickly organized a helicopter landing zone and supervised the movement of wounded Marines into a central location for medial evacuation. Continuing his determined efforts, he then skillfully guided helicopters into the zone, thereby providing lifesaving evacuation for numerous casualties. By his courage, bold initiative and unswerving devotion to duty at great personal risk, Private First Class Staggs inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

On the night of 7 January 1970, Staff Sergeant Stamps was leading his platoon during a combat patrol when one of the Marines alertly detected an unexploded enemy bobby trap. After fearlessly examining the lethal device, Staff Sergeant Stamps determined that, because of its construction, it could not be safely disarmed. Unwilling to leave it in place and thus risk possible harm to other persons, he elected to detonate it in place. After carefully positioning his men in covered positions well away from the dangerous area, he valiantly approached the explosive device, but was mortally wounded when it prematurely exploded. His heroic and determined actions inspired all who observed him and saved several Marines from serious wounds or possible death. By his courage, selfless concern for his fellowmen, and steadfast devotion to duty, Staff Sergeant Stamps upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Charles Richard Stanford (0-110356), Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps (Reserve), for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company G, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours of 9 December 1970, while occupying a position in defense of a hamlet in the Que Son District, a unit of Marines and Regional Forces soldiers came under a vicious ground attack by a large North Vietnamese Army force supported by intense mortar and rocket fire. Reacting instantly, First Lieutenant Stanford posted security at the vital Combat Operations Center, then fearlessly rushed across the fire-swept terrain to a mortar position manned by Regional Force soldiers and, after issuing instructions and pointing out targets to the men, again braved the withering fire to race back to the Combat Operations Center and request supporting artillery fire. While he was adjusting this fire on the enemy assembly areas and routes of advance and egress, a container of chemicals was damaged by a hostile grenade, spreading noxious fumes throughout the area. Realizing the need for immediate action to protect the vision of his companions, and enable them to continue their tasks, First Lieutenant Stanford unhesitatingly left the relative security of his emplacement and boldly crawled to a nearby bunker where h procured several gas masks and, after fearlessly retracing his hazardous route, distributed them among the command post personnel. Seemingly oblivious to the rounds impacting around him, he then moved to the point of heaviest contact and assisted the Regional Forces soldiers there to strengthen their positions. Under intense fire, he then coordinated and directed the medical evacuation of wounded Marines and Regional Force soldiers. Inspired by his fearless leadership and bold courage, the combined Vietnamese-American force waged a vigorous defense of the friendly positions until the North Vietnamese Army unit, having sustained numerous casualties, was forced to retreat. By his heroism, decisive actions, and steadfast devotion to duty at great personal risk, First Lieutenant Stanford contributed significantly to the defeat of a large enemy force and upheld the highest tradition of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

On the morning of 19 December 1970, Lieutenant Colonel Steadman launched as a Section Leader of a flight of two CH-46 transport helicopters assigned the mission of transporting elements of two Marine companies to various sites in Quang Nam Province. While on an approach to one of the landing zones in the Que Son Mountains, his aircraft lost power, crashed approximately seventy-five yards short of the landing zone, rolled to its left, came to rest upon its port side among some large boulders, and immediately burst into flames. After exiting the cockpit, Lieutenant Colonel Steadman looked back into his transport and saw that his copilot was unconscious and pinned down between his armored seat and the deck. Undaunted by exploding mortar rounds and ammunition and the intense heat, Lieutenant Colonel Steadman broke through one of the panels and reentered his helicopter. Upon seeing that one of his aerial gunners was pinned down in the wreckage and flames were rapidly moving toward him, he boldly assisted another Marine in freeing the aerial gunner and dragging him to safety through the broken windshield. Resolutely returning to the side of his copilot, Lieutenant Colonel Steadman aided another Marine in freeing the copilot's foot which was caught in the rudder pedal area, cut the straps securing the man to his seat, and then pulled him to the windshield where others helped to lift him out and carry him to safety. By his courage, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Lieutenant Colonel Steadman was instrumental in saving the lives of two of his fellow Marines and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

On 18 August 1968, Company E was participating in Operation MAMELUKE THRUST in Quang Nam Province when Corporal Steiner's platoon came under a heavy volume of small arms and automatic weapons fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force and several Marines fell wounded in a dangerously exposed area. After several attempts to retrieve the casualties were abandoned because of the intense hostile fire, Corporal Steiner unhesitatingly commenced delivering suppressive fire upon the enemy positions as he maneuvered across 150 meters of fire-swept terrain to the side of an injured Marine. Disregarding his own safety, he fearlessly shielded his injured comrade with his own body while skillfully treating the man's wounds and then carried the casualty through the intense hostile fire to a covered position. Ignoring the enemy rounds impacting near him, he maneuvered across the hazardous area on two additional occasions to assist other wounded Marines, and as he was moving the third man to a position of relative safety, Corporal Steiner was seriously injured. Resolutely continuing his determined efforts, he steadfastly refused medical assistance until the other wounded man had been evacuated. His resolute determination and sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of his fellow Marines. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Michael John Stevens (0-95091), First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company B, Third Engineer Battalion, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 18 September 1967, First Lieutenant Stevens, as the Team Leader of a mine clearing detail, was advancing in front of his men and accompanying security forces during an operation near Camp Evans in Thua Thien Province. As he moved through an open area covered with dense undergrowth, he alertly observed a portion of detonation cord camouflaged in the thick undergrowth and immediately recognized it to be of Chinese Communist manufacture. Realizing that the cord was probably connected to enemy command detonated mines in the area, First Lieutenant Stevens unhesitatingly, and with complete disregard for his own safety, boldly reached forward and cut the line. Almost simultaneously, the enemy detonated the explosive devices which severed three fingers on his right hand and paralyzed his left wrist and hand. A subsequent inspection of the mined area revealed that, as a result of his immediate evaluation of the situation and presence of mind, only seven of twenty-one mines in the area were successfully detonated, undoubtedly saving the lives of several Marines. By his courageous actions, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, First Lieutenant Stevens upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

While on a combat patrol on 22 July 1966, Staff Sergeant Stinson's squad was moving down a narrow jungle trail deep in enemy controlled territory when it confronted an approaching North Vietnamese platoon. Almost immediately, the squad's point man fired and killed the lead man of the enemy unit. Quickly, the enemy platoon, supported by two machine guns, deployed to both sides of the trail and launched a vicious attack against the Marines. Despite the intense fire, Staff Sergeant Stinson skillfully maneuvered his squad and positioned his machine gun in order to deliver a heavy volume of fire at the enemy. Gaining fire superiority over the enemy force, he courageously led his men in a fierce assault that disorganized the enemy unit and forced them to withdraw. In large measure due to his heroic and aggressive actions, six North Vietnamese soldiers were killed while the Marine squad suffered only one casualty. His determined fighting spirit and bold initiative inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private First Class Stokes exposed himself to the hostile fire in order to assist his injured comrades. Ignoring the intense enemy fire, he fearlessly maneuvered across the fire-swept terrain to a wounded corpsman and skillfully rendered medical treatment. Despite the heavy volume of enemy fire directed at him, he unhesitatingly crawled toward an injured Marine officer. Before reaching the casualty, however, Private First Class Stokes was mortally wounded. As the Marines neared the besieged unit, they were suddenly halted by a heavy volume of fire from concealed enemy positions which inflicted numerous casualties. Alertly observing a hostile automatic weapon emplacement, Corporal Stoppa seized a satchel charge and, with complete disregard for his own safety, began maneuvering across the fire-swept terrain toward the enemy position. Ignoring the intense fire impacting around him, he fearlessly crawled next to the fortified emplacement and hurled the explosive charge inside, killing several North Vietnamese soldiers and silencing their automatic weapon. Upon returning to his unit's position. he boldly moved about the hazardous area administering first aid to his wounded comrades and evacuating them to positions of relative safety, until he was seriously wounded by the hostile fire. His bold initiative and sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in the accomplishment of his unit's mission. Strickland, Staff Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 19 June 1969, Staff Sergeant Strickland's platoon was serving as point element during a company- sized search and destroy operation eight miles east of An Hoa in Quang Nam Province when the Marines came under intense machine gun and automatic weapons fire from an estimated enemy squad defending what appeared to be an extensive base camp. Skillfully maneuvering his men to prevent the North Vietnamese from breaking contact, Staff Sergeant Strickland unhesitatingly advanced to within hand grenade range of the enemy where he could better observe the situation and direct the efforts of his platoon. Although painfully wounded by grenade fragments, he fearlessly led an aggressive assault through the heavy volume of fire, personally killing a North Vietnamese Army officer. As a result of his heroic and bold actions, the enemy position was overrun, resulting in the capture of a pistol, six rifles, two submachine guns and light machine gun. By his courage, bold leadership and steadfast devotion to duty at great personal risk, Staff Sergeant Strickland inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Stroud (2341655), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company C, First battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 7 July 1968, during an operation against a numerically superior enemy force in the vicinity of Hill 689 near Khe Sanh, in Quang Tri Province, Corporal Stroud's platoon was the point element for his company as it advanced to evacuate casualties and relieve another Marine company which was heavily engaged with the enemy. As the Marines moved to the location of the beleaguered company, Corporal Stroud's unit came under heavy North Vietnamese mortar and sniper fire. Undaunted by the heavy volume of hostile fire around him, he aggressively led his men forward through the hazardous mortar barrage and quickly deployed them in advantageous positions. Observing that several Marines from an adjacent platoon were wounded and exposed to the continuous enemy fire, Corporal Stroud unhesitatingly led several of his men across fifty meters of fire-swept terrain to the side of the casualties and, after personally administering medical aid to four men, directed the evacuation of the wounded to an area of relative safety. Returning to his squad, he was maneuvering his men forward when he observed a North Vietnamese sniper inflicting heavy casualties on t he assaulting platoon. Directing the remainder of his squad to provide protective covering fire, he crawled to within hand grenade range of the hostile position and was preparing to throw a grenade when the sniper was killed by the accurate fire of his squad members. Momentarily pausing in order to replace the firing pin in the grenade, Corporal Stroud was struck by enemy fire. Although mortally wounded and in extreme pain, he called for assistance and remained conscious long enough for a companion to reach his side and remove the hand grenade before he collapsed from his wound. His presence of mind and selfless actions undoubtedly prevented serious injury or possible death to his fellow Marines around him. By his courage, bold initiative and unfaltering devotion to duty, Corporal Stroud contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Sullivan (0-102448), First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Pilot with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron THREE HUNDRED SIXTY-FOUR (HMM-364), Marine Aircraft Group SIXTEEN (MAG-16), FIRST Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Late on the afternoon of 7 February 1969, Fist Lieutenant Sullivan launched as Aircraft Commander aboard a CH-46 transport helicopter assigned to heli-lift a recovery team to a crash site in Quang Nam Province to retrieve five fatally injured Marines whose aircraft had come under intense hostile fire and crashed while engaged in a medical evacuation mission. Arriving over the designated area, he ignored the enemy fire directed against his helicopter as he orbited the area and was briefed on the ground situation. Undaunted by the extremely heavy volume of hostile small arms, automatic weapons, and machine gun fire, he skillfully directed the delivery of his crew's suppressive machine gun fire and fearlessly maneuvered through the hail of enemy fire to land near the downed aircraft. Oblivious to the hostile rounds impacting near his CH-46, he resolutely remained in his dangerously exposed position while his recovery team disembarked and three wounded Marines were placed aboard. Departing the area for the nearest medical facility, he disembarked the casualties and quickly returned to the beleaguered Marines' position. Despite the darkness, adverse weather, and the increasing intensity of enemy fire, First Lieutenant Sullivan completely disregarded his own safety as he boldly maneuvered his CH-46 into the hazardous area and resolutely held his position on the ground until the Marine casualties and salvaged items were placed aboard and the recovery team embarked before maneuvering his heavily loaded helicopter out of he dangerous area and departing for the Marble Mountain Air Facility. By his courage, superior airmanship and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal risk, First Lieutenant Sullivan was instrumental in the accomplishment of the hazardous mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service."

Sumner (1805926), Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as the Crew Chief of a UH-34 Helicopter with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron THREE HUNDRED SIXTY-FOUR (HMM-364), FIRST Marine Aircraft Wing, in the Republic of Vietnam. On 4 December 1965, Sergeant Sumner's helicopter was sent on an emergency evacuation mission to rescue a wounded Army advisor and evacuate the crew of a crashed Marine helicopter in insurgent communist (Viet Cong) controlled territory. As his helicopter landed, hostile fire was received. With complete disregard for his own safety, he jumped out of the aircraft and ran to the aid of the wounded advisor. While still under direct enemy fire, Sergeant Sumner climbed a steep bank, only to find his path blocked by a barbed wire fence. Tearing down this obstacle with his bare hands, he ran across an exposed area for twenty-five yards, but found his route obstructed by an eight foot bamboo fence. Tearing a hole in the fence, he reached the wounded advisor, lifting him to his shoulder and returning across the same exposed and heavily defended area, successfully loading him aboard the waiting helicopter. Resuming his regular duties as crew chief, Sergeant Sumner immediately delivered heavy suppressive machine gun fire on enemy positions. By his heroic actions and selfless devotion to duty in the face of grave personal risk, Sergeant Sumner upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."

Sykora (2192997), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Automatic Rifleman with Company M, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. In the early morning hours on 14 May 1967, Lance Corporal Sykora's company was subjected to intense small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire, followed by a vicious attack by a North Vietnamese force during Operation Union near Phouc Duc (4) in Quang Tin Province. Unhesitatingly, Lance Corporal Sykora exposed himself to the concentrated enemy fire while directing accurate return fire on the enemy. Almost immediately, the enemy pinpointed his position, but undaunted by the intense fire striking around him, Lance Corporal Sykora remained in his perilous position, inflicting numerous casualties and disorganizing the North Vietnamese until he was seriously wounded by enemy fire in the had and neck. In large measure due to Lance Corporal Sykora's bold actions and courage in the face of grave personal danger, the enemy was repulsed and forty-six North Vietnamese soldiers were killed. By his exceptional professional ability, fearless initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Sykora upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
