Andre Reiss

  • The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Andre Reiss, Interpreter, French Army, for extraordinary heroism in action during the St. Mihiel offensive, France, 1918, and at Mont Blanc, France, October 5 – 9, 1918. While attached to the 4th Machine Gun Battalion, Interpreter Reiss voluntarily assumed the duties of the battalion adjutant who had been injured. In reconnaissance, maintaining communication, and establishing liaison he displayed absolute fearlessness and rendered valuable assistance to the battalion. At Mont Blanc, October 5 – 9, 1918, he continually went back and forth through artillery and machine-gun fire in order to maintain liaison between the 4th Machine Gun Battalion and the French unit on the right.
