Anton Lebre

  • The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Anton Lebre, Captain, French Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Montfauxelles, France, September 29 – October 4, 1918. While on duty as senior French officer near the colonel of the 371st United States Infantry, Captain Lebre volunteered and went forward to make reconnaissance, during which he was wounded in the face by a bursting shell. After being evacuated, he insisted on returning to duty with the regiment, though he was still suffering from fever caused by his wound and exposure during the battle.
