The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Bertrand, Captain, French Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Blanc Mont Ridge, France. October 3, 1918. While attached to the Second American Division Captain Bertrand led his company of tanks into the fight under terrific shell and machine-gun fire. He set an example of coolness and bravery to all about him, being conspicuous for his devotion to duty, in the performance of which he was killed by the enemy fire.
