Lieutenant Braden, with 20 men, having been attacked by nearly 200 Indians, although severely wounded in the encounter, by his personal gallantry and splendid leadership so inspired his small command as to enable it to repulse the attack by overwhelmingly superior numbers.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Thomas Kelly, First Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action in an engagement with hostile Chippewa Indians at Leech Lake, Minnesota, October 5 - 6, 1918. Sergeant Kelly displayed extraordinary heroism in assuming, upon the death of his commanding officer, the command of the skirmishers on the right of the line. With utter disregard for his own personal safety he so gallantly led and directed his men that this action had much to do with the subsequent victorious result of the engagement.

Citation:
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John A. Kress, Captain, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Umatilla, Oregon, July 8, 1878. Captain Kress volunteered, though not charged with combat duties, to organized and lead an expedition against bands of hostile Piute-Bannock Indians and to prevent their crossing the Columbia river. Captain Kress seized a river boat and equipped it as a gunboat and by his gallant and fearless leadership in patrolling the Columbia River was successful in five attacks upon the Indians, both on land and from the river; succeeded in capturing and killing their horses, destroyed their boats, arms, and ammunition, and camp equipage, thus frustrating their plan of spreading the war among the Indians to the North.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to James Franklin Bell, Major, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action against Spanish forces at Manila, Philippine Islands, August 10, 1898. Major Bell, with utter disregard for his personal safety, conducted a bold and daring reconnaissance of the creek in front of Fort San Antonio de Abad held by Spanish forces, and ascertained not only that it was fordable, but the exact width of the ford at the beach, and swimming in the bay to a point from which he could examine the Spanish line from the rear, secured information which facilitated the planning of the successful attack of August 13, 1898, on Manila, Philip pine Islands.

In the face of a heavy fire from insurgent forces, with great gallantry Lieutenant Aloe advanced to within 75 yards of the enemy's line and rescued the dead body, arms, and equipment of a soldier of his command and dressed the serious wounds of another.

Displaying great gallantry and with utter disregard for his life, he swam the river in the face of heavy rifle fire, returned on a raft, secured arms and ammunition, crossed a second time, and took part in an attack which drove a superior force of the enemy from their trenches and the town occupied by them, thereby making possible the further advance of his company.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Perry L. Miles, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Manila, Philippine Islands, February 5, 1899. During the attack by two companies of the 14th Infantry on blockhouse No. 14 and adjacent trenches strongly held by insurgent forces, when the commanding officer was mortally wounded, the advance was checked and the troops were partially demoralized in the face of a heavy concentrated fire from the front and both flanks, Lieutenant Miles assumed command, ordered the advance to continue, and went along the line with utter disregard of the hostile fire and urged his men forward. Then, with exceptional gallantry and the highest qualities of leadership, he dashed forward, many yards ahead of his men, calling on them to follow, and drove the enemy from their position. His splendid example of personal heroism, courage, and coolness furnished the needed inspiration to the wavering command and resulted in the successful accomplishment of a seemingly impossible attack.

During the attack on the Moro stronghold Lieutenant Parrott commanded with great gallantry and coolness a mountain-gun detachment. In the face of enemy fire the mountain gun was dragged to and held by block and tackle within a few yards of the hostile position, from which place he directed a heavy fire on the enemy, and replaced his gunner when the latter was severely wounded. When the assault on the enemy's position took place and the gun commanded by Lieutenant Parrott could no longer be fired, he took command of the men in his immediate vicinity, gallantly leading them forward, and engaging the charging enemy in hand-to-hand combat.

While commanding the leading troop of the advance guard of an expedition against Dato Ali, upon locating Ali's cotta, which was occupied by hostile Moros, Lieutenant Remington courageously dashed forward, leading his men, and engaged the enemy at point-blank range. In a pistol and rifle duel he succeeded in killing Ali with his pistol, but not until one of Lieutenant Remington's own men had been killed by rifle fire from Ali. He then disposed his command, which in a brisk fire fight killed the remaining members of the band of Moros.

During the engagement at Tulgas, rather than order any of his men to take the risk, Sergeant Bowman personally delivered a message over a road torn and swept by machine-gun and shell fire. On March 1, 1919, when knee-deep in snow, and after he had been exposed for almost three hours to a temperature below zero and to enemy fire, he was mortally wounded while passing down the firing line in an heroic effort to keep up the spirits of his men.

He then moved to a new location and continued to work for two days under shell fire, until this dressing station too was struck and he himself mortally wounded, whereupon he gave orders that the other wounded should be removed first, and that he be left until the last.

Captain Collison acted as artillery observer in an advance against the enemy, which was continuous over several hours and at all times under very heavy artillery and machine-gun fire. He not only accompanied the advance troops, but at times went ahead of them, in order better to direct the fire of the American troops. At one time, when by a rapid advance of a portion of our troops, they were within the danger zone of our own fire, telephone communication having been cut, Captain Collison returned through the enemy barrage and taking a position in the open and under fire signaled a warning to our artillery. By this particularly brave and daring act the success of the American Infantry in this engagement was assured.

On September 14 - 15, 1918, Lieutenant Lorber displayed great courage in exposing himself to heavy enemy fire while directing the fire of his machine guns. On November 4 he further distinguished himself by going forward under heavy fire and supplying needed ammunition to advanced positions.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Robert L. Eichelberger, Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action in Siberia, June 28 - July 3, 1919, while serving as assistant chief of staff, G-2, American Expeditionary Forces, Siberia. On July 2, 1919, after the capture by American troops of Novitskaya, an American platoon detailed to clear hostile patrols from a commanding ridge was halted by enemy enfilading fire, seriously wounding the members of the patrol. Colonel Eichelberger, without regard to his own safety and armed with a rifle, voluntarily covered the withdrawal of the platoon. On June 28, at the imminent danger of his own life, he entered the partisan lines and effected the release of one American officer and three enlisted men in exchange for a Russian prisoner. On July 3 an American column being fired upon when debouching from a mountain pass, Colonel Eichelberger voluntarily assisted in establishing the firing line, prevented confusion, and, by his total disregard for his own safety, raised the morale of the American forces to a high pitch.

Corporal Vogel voluntarily ran a railway locomotive past a cliff three different times to draw the fire of a large force of bandits in order to locate their exact position, so that the bandits could be driven off by machine-gun fire in order to clear the way for a wagon train. On each trip he was subjected to heavy rifle fire, the cab of the engine being punctured in several places, and his Russian assistant slightly wounded.
