  • For members of the Armed Forces participating in peaceful U.S. operations, not in the face of foreign armed opposition or imminent hostile action after 1 June 1992, for which no other U.S. service medals are available.
  • Service members involved in qualifying operations but who are awarded other service medals (Southwest Asia Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, etc.) are not eligible for the award. Secretary Perry has approved the award of the Armed Forces Service Medal to service men and women who:
    1. Participate, or have participated, as members of U.S. military units, in a U.S. military operation considered a significant activity and encounter no foreign armed opposition or imminent threat of hostile action, or:

    2. Participate in operations relating to the former Republic of Yugoslavia from 1 June 1992 through a future date to be determined.  Operations include:

      • Provide Promise
      • Joint Endeavor
      • Able Sentury
      • Deny Flight
      • Maritime Monitor
      • Sharp Guard
