For heroism, meritorious achievement or meritorious service.
Authorized in 1945, the Army Commendation Medal (earlier the "Commendation Ribbon") is awarded to members of the Armed Forces who have performed commendable service or achieved a significant accomplishment. The medal may be awarded to both officers and enlisted personnel and is typically given for actions that occur while in a combat zone.
