Authorized in 1947 as a ribbon bar and re-designated the Coast Guard Commendation Medal in 1959, this recognition is awarded by the Coast Guard  to its own (including Reserves) or members of other Armed Forces serving with the Coast Guard, who distinguish themselves by heroic action, outstanding achievement, or meritorious service.
