Barker, Major, U.S. Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious and conspicuous service as Battalion Commander, 1st Battalion, 6th Regiment Marines, and for distinguished and exceptional gallantry at Sommerance, France, on November 1, 1918. Major Barker skillfully led his battalion, which was in a front line position, from the "jumping off" place near Sommerance, to the first objective. He kept his men close to the barrage, all the way subjected to a heavy fire of high explosives and a machine-gun barrage. He reached his objective on time and secured a number of prisoners and considerable material.

Barr, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism as a Pilot in the First Marine Aviation Force, attached to the Northern Bomb Group (USN), at the front in France. On September 26, 1918, while on an air raid over enemy territory, Lieutenant Barr was attacked by a superior number of enemy scouts. In the fight which ensued he behaved with conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity, and despite having been mortally wounded, he drove off the enemy and brought his plane safely back to the aerodrome.

Major Berry led his men in a gallant attack across and into the Bois-de-Belleau on the afternoon of June 6, 1918, inspiring them to deeds of valor by his example. When he reached the edge of the woods he fell, severely wounded. Nevertheless he arose and made a final dash of 30 yards across an open field through a storm of bullets, and reached again the first wave of his command, before yielding to exhaustion from his injury.

The Navy Cross is presented to William F. Bevan, Major, U.S. Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service as Assistant to the Chief Paymaster of the U. S. Marine Corps in France. Major Bevan performed arduous and complex duties, many of which were outside the normal sphere of the Paymaster's Department. With untiring zeal and unlimited patience Major Bevan worked unceasingly, under the most trying circumstances, to relieve combatant units of a mass of clerical and administrative detail. His ability and tireless devotion to duty added much to the morale of the personnel serving under him and as a direct result of this, in no small degree to the morale of the combatant forces of the Corps in France.

On several occasions, regardless of his personal safety, First Lieutenant Bleasdale led his machine-gun platoon through heavy machine-gun and artillery fire. When the Infantry company which he was supporting was halted by the fire of two enemy Maxims, Lieutenant Bleasdale formed his platoon as infantry, assaulted and captured both the enemy guns.

The Navy Cross is presented to Everett R. Brewer, First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism on September 28, 1918, as a Pilot of the First Marine Aviation Force, attached to the Northern Bomb Group (USN), while on an air raid in company with Squadron 218, Royal Air Force. Lieutenant Brewer was attacked over Cortemarck, Belgium by fifteen enemy scout planes. During the severe fight which followed, his plane was shot down and although both himself and his observer were very seriously wounded, he brought the plane safely back to the aerodrome. Lieutenant Brewer was shot through the hip and his observer shot through the lungs. Considering the distance from Cortemarck to his aerodrome this is a remarkable instance.

Despite their injuries, they immediately reset the gun and opened fire on the advancing Germans when twenty feet distant, causing the Germans to break and retreat in disorder.

The Navy Cross is presented to Daniel Joseph Daly, First Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for repeated deeds of heroism and great service while serving with the 73d Company, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., on June 5 and 7, 1918 at Lucy-le-Bocage, and on June 10, 1918 in the attack on Bouresches, France. On June 5th, at the risk of his life, First Sergeant Daly extinguished a fire in an ammunition dump at Lucy-le-Bocage. On June 10, 1918, he attacked an enemy machine-gun emplacement unassisted and captured it by use of hand grenades and his automatic pistol. Commanding a detachment of about sixty men in the rear of the attacking battalion, Captain DeCarre continued forward alone, after the advance battalion had swerved to the right. About one- hundred fifty yards distant, he encountered deadly enemy machine-gun fire, but he continued on, capturing two guns. He then brought up his detachment, and by exceptional handling, effected the capture of an entire machine-gun company consisting of three officers and 169 men. His effort prevented the enemy from firing on our troops from the rear.

When his platoon was held up by barbed-wire entanglements within 30 yards of an enemy machine-gun nest, Private First Class DePue took an automatic rifle from a dead gunner near him and, firing as he advanced, charged through the wire. He fell twice, but reached the enemy position after his ammunition was exhausted, swinging his rifle above his head as a club upon the enemy defenders. When the platoon reached the enemy nest Private DePue was found lying mortally wounded among four enemy dead.

With the assistance of three sergeants, Lieutenant Heckman started out to destroy the final stand of the enemy in the Bois-de-Belleau, an impregnable position, where enemy guns were concealed by rocks and heavy shrubbery. Armed with only a pistol, Lieutenant Heckman rushed the nest which was offering the most violent resistance, and captured one officer and ninety men. Each of his men destroyed a nest and captured two of the enemy at each position. After effecting the complete reduction of the last element, Lieutenant Heckman marched his prisoners in under a severe and harassing fire of the retreating enemy.

The Navy Cross is presented to John A. Hughes, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service as Battalion Commander, 1st Battalion, 6th Regiment Marines. In the operations of his battalion at Belleau Woods from the 10th to the 13th of June, 1918, Lieutenant Colonel Hughes showed himself a gallant, courageous and determined commander of men. Inflicting severe losses on the enemy, capturing many prisoners, twenty machine guns, six minnenwerfers and other booty. The brilliant success of this battalion was in a great measure due to his coolness in all crises, unfailing good humor and accurate judgment. Lieutenant Colonel Hughes led his men superbly under most trying conditions against the most distinguished elements of the German Army, administering to those organizations their first defeat.

The Navy Cross is presented to Ralph S. Keyser, Major, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while attached to the Fifth Marines in France. Major Keyser participated in the battles of the Chateau- Thierry Sector, June 10th to July 10th; in the counter-thrust southwest of Soissons, July 18th to 19th; and as member of the General Staff of the Second Division. He participated in the occupation of the Marbache Sector (just north of Nancy) August 12th to 16th; the St. Mihiel salient September 2 to 16; the battle of Blanc Mont Ridge, October 1st to 10th, and the battle of the Meuse-Argonne, November 1 to 11th; the march to the Rhine; the occupation of the Coblens Bridge Head, and return of the Second Division to the United States and in the workings of his important department very efficiently, and with marked success. The services rendered Major Keyser were conspicuous; highly meritorious, and in duty of great responsibility.

While attempting to better his position in the face of heavy machine-gun and artillery fire he was killed.

When volunteers were called for to rescue another member of his company who was severely wounded, Private Korman responded and, in plain view of the enemy, carried his wounded comrade to shelter through heavy machine-gun fire.
