The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Alexander Rieman Early, Captain, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. CANBERRA (CA-70), in action against the enemy on 13 and 16 October 1944, off Formosa. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Navy of the United States.

EARNEST, ALBERT KYLE

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Albert Kyle Earnest, Ensign, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Torpedo Plane of Torpedo Squadron EIGHT (VT-8), embarked from Naval Air Station Midway during the "Air Battle of Midway," against enemy Japanese forces on 4 June 1942. In the first attack against an enemy carrier of the Japanese invasion fleet, Ensign Earnest pressed home his attack in the face of withering fire from enemy Japanese fighters and anti-aircraft forces. His outstanding courage and determined skill were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Navy Cross to Albert Kyle Earnest, Ensign, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Torpedo Plane of Torpedo Squadron EIGHT (VT-8), embarked from Naval Air Station Midway during the "Air Battle of Midway," against enemy Japanese forces on 4 June 1942. Having completed an unsupported torpedo attack in the face of tremendous enemy fighter and anti-aircraft opposition, Ensign Earnest, himself wounded and his gunner dead, made his return flight in a plane riddled by machine gun bullets and cannon shell. With his compass and Bombay doors inoperative, one wheel of his landing gear unable to be extended and his elevator-control shot away, he was forced to fly by expert use of his elevator trimming tabs some 200 miles back to Midway where he negotiated a safe one-wheel landing. Fully aware of the inestimable importance of determining the combat efficiency of a heretofore unproven plane, Ensign Earnest doggedly persisted in spite of tremendous hazards and physical difficulties. His great courage and marked skill in handling his crippled plane were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

EARNEST, ALBERT KYLE

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting a Second Gold Star in lieu of a Third Award of the Navy Cross to Albert Kyle Earnest, Ensign, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Torpedo Plane in Torpedo Squadron EIGHT (VT-8), embarked from the U.S.S. HORNET (CV-8), in action on 16 and 22 September 1942, and 9 to 12 October 1942, while deployed over the Solomon Islands. As part of a composite striking force which launched an attack against hostile surface units about 150 miles northwest of Guadalcanal, Lieutenant (junior grade), Earnest contributed to the scoring of a torpedo hit on a Japanese cruiser. On 22 September, together with two other torpedo bombers, he glide-bombed enemy installations at Cape Esperance. On 9 October, in a striking force operating 140 miles northwest of Guadalcanal, he obtained a direct hit which put a heavy cruiser out of action. On 10 and 12 October he participated in air raids against Japanese naval units which resulted in another hit on an enemy warship about 165 miles off Guadalcanal. His cool courage and conscientious devotion to duty, maintained at great risk in the face of grave danger, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

EASON, VAN VERNON, JR.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Van Vernon Eason, Jr., Lieutenant, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Dive Bomber in Bombing Squadron TEN (VB-10), attached to the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE (CV-6), in action against enemy Japanese forces west of the Marianas Islands, during the First Battle of the Philippine Sea, on 20 June 1944. By his airmanship and cool courage in the face of tremendous odds, Lieutenant Eason contributed materially to the infliction of extensive and costly damage on the Japanese Fleet in this decisive engagement and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

EATON, JOHN M., JR.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to John M. Eaton, Jr., Lieutenant, Junior Grade, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism while serving as a Ground Officer of Patrol Squadron TWENTY-ONE (VP-21), temporarily based at the Naval Air Station, Midway Island, during the attack by Japanese naval forces on the night of 7 December 1941. When devastating hostile gunfire damaged or destroyed several Catalina flying boats, the hangar and other installations, Ensign Eaton organized a crew of untrained civilian workmen and, without benefit of tractors and lines, ingeniously directed the launching of heavily overloaded aircraft. In the cold water of the lagoon and on a ramp which was flooded with gasoline from damaged airplanes and lighted by conflagration nearby, he valiantly and resolutely continued his work without regard for his safety until all Catalinas capable of flight had been launched. Although completely unfamiliar with aviation, Ensign Eaton, by his courageous initiative and tenacious determination, successfully executed this highly technical operation and thereby undoubtedly contributed to the Japanese abandonment of their attack, consequently saving the islands from more extensive damage. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Navy of the United States.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Maxwell A. Eaton, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier- based Navy Scouting Plane in Scouting Squadron FORTY-ONE (VS-41), embarked from the U.S.S. RANGER (CV-4), in action during the occupation of French Morocco, 8 to 11 November 1942. Launching a vigorous dive-bombing raid on hostile surface units in the vicinity of Casablanca on 8 November, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Eaton, under a bursting hail of anti-aircraft shells, scored a direct 500-pound bomb hit on a light cruiser. On another flight, he volunteered for and brilliantly executed an individual dive-bombing attack on an antiaircraft battery, which he succeeded in silencing. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Eaton's performance of duty was highly instrumental in reducing the resistance of the hostile forces and thereby greatly assisted the final occupation of the Casablanca area. His outstanding courage, daring airmanship and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Hilan Ebert, Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Engineering Officer aboard the Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. NORTHAMPTON (CA-26), after the torpedoing of his ship in enemy-controlled waters during the Battle of Tassafaronga on the night of 30 November 1942. Stationed in the after engine room a the time the Northampton was torpedoed and set afire, Lieutenant Commander Ebert persistently carried out his duties despite the fact that his station, immediately after the explosion, became flooded with oil and water. The conduct of Lieutenant Commander Ebert throughout this action reflects great credit upon himself, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

EBERT, WALTER G.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Walter G. Ebert, Commander, U.S. Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. SCAMP (SS-277), on the FOURTH War Patrol of that submarine during the period 2 September 1943 to 1 October 1943, in enemy controlled waters of the Bismarck Sea. During this aggressive patrol in enemy waters, Commander Ebert directed the fire of his ship with accuracy and splendid timing, causing the complete destruction of two valuable Japanese ships and a probable third. Through his experience and sound judgment Commander Ebert brought his ship safely back to port. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to his officers and men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

ECCLES, HENRY EFFINGHAM

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Henry Effingham Eccles, Commander, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. JOHN D. EDWARDS (DD-216), in action against enemy Japanese naval forces at Badoeng Straits off the Island of Bali, Netherlands East Indies, on the night of 19 - 20 February 1942. Commander Eccles delivered a well-directed and gallant attack by gun and torpedo fire against a vastly superior force of enemy vessels. Although the ship which he commanded was illuminated by the enemy and under heavy fire, its fire scored several hits which damaged the enemy ships and silenced their fire. Commander Eccles' inspiring leadership and the valiant devotion to duty of his command contributed in large measure to the outstanding success of this vital mission and reflects great credit upon the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Ian C. Eddy, Commander, U.S. Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. PARGO (SS-264), on the FIRST War Patrol of that submarine during the period 18 August 1943 to 6 October 1943, in enemy controlled waters of the East China Sea. Commander Eddy engaged in an aggressive and successful patrol against Japanese shipping in the Pacific War Area during which, although operating against heavily escorted units, he launched a series of daring night surface attacks which sank or damaged much hostile shipping. Through his experience and sound judgment Commander Eddy brought his ship safely back to port. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to his officers and men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Lawrence Lott Edge (0-074855), Commander, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. BONEFISH (SS-223), during the SIXTH War Patrol of that vessel in enemy Japanese controlled waters of the Pacific, from 5 September to 8 November 19445. Despite intense enemy air and surface opposition, Commander Edge skillfully maneuvered his ship into a favorable position to launch four well-placed and brilliantly executed torpedo attacks and sink three enemy ships totaling 22,000 tons and damaged two additional vessels totaling 8.900 tons. In addition, he effectively conducted the rescue of two downed friendly aviators. A bold tactician, Commander Edge expertly avoided enemy countermeasures and brought his ship safely to port. His inspiring leadership and devotion to duty in the fulfillment of this hazardous patrol reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Lawrence Lott Edge (0-074855), Commander, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. BONEFISH (SS-223), during the SEVENTH War Patrol of that vessel in the East China Sea Area from 6 April to 7 May 1945. Despite the constant danger of navigating in shoal waters and the possibility of aerial bombings and detection by shore-based enemy radar and patrol vessels, Commander Edge daringly penetrated enemy minefields and successfully performed a special mission in this area. In addition, he captured two enemy aviators while performing lifeguard duties and skillfully evaded severe enemy anti-submarine measures to bring his ship safe to port. His conduct throughout the entire mission was an inspiration to his officers and men and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting a Second Gold Star in lieu of a Third Award of the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Lawrence Lott Edge (0-074855), Commander, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. BONEFISH (SS-223), during the EIGHTH War Patrol of that vessel in the Japanese Sea off the west coast of Honshu, Japan. Fully aware of the extreme dangers involved, Commander Edge left port in his veteran submarine on 28 May 1945, to conduct one of the First War Patrols to be made in this area. Boldly penetrating strong anti-submarine barriers, he entered the supposedly inviolable waters of the Japan sea and, with superb skill and daring, maneuvered the Bonefish into shallow, confined waters to launch his devastating torpedo attacks against enemy targets vital to the Japanese war effort. Striking with devastating speed and precision, Commander Edge succeeded in sending two valuable ships to the bottom despite strong hostile countermeasures. While continuing this smashing offensive, overwhelming counterattacks were encountered which caused the loss of this outstanding submarine and her gallant commanding officer. A forceful and inspiring leader, Commander Edge, by his brilliant seamanship, initiative and indomitable perseverance, maintained in the face of tremendous odds, contributed essentially to the infliction of extensive damage and destruction on the enemy during this urgent mission and to the success of our sustained drive to force the capitulation of the Japanese Empire. His courage and resolute devotion to duty throughout reflect the highest credit upon himself, his intrepid command and the United States Naval Service.

EDWARDS, FREDERICK L., JR.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Frederick L. Edwards, Jr., Lieutenant, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Boarding Officer on board the Destroyer U.S.S. EBERLE (DD-430), when an enemy blockade runner was intercepted and destroyed on 10 March 1943, in the South Atlantic Ocean. When the EBERLE was ordered to put a boarding party on the hostile ship, Lieutenant Edwards courageously led his party to the runner and was the first to board her. In the face of grave danger from the rapidly spreading fires and explosion of demolition charges, he made an energetic and determined effort to salvage the ship and to obtain information of the enemy. Only after several explosions had rocked the vessel and she began to sink did he dive over the stern into the sea, from which he was later rescued. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Navy of the United States.

EDWARDS, JOHN PERRY

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to John Perry Edwards, Ensign, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of an airplane, and for extraordinary courage and disregard of his own safety during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, by Japanese forces on 7 December 1941. Although contact with the enemy meant almost certain destruction and despite the lack of any armament in this type plane, Ensign Edwards voluntarily piloted a JRS amphibian plane, equipped only with Springfield rifles, in search for and to obtain information of the enemy forces. Ensign Edwards' outstanding courage, daring airmanship and determined skill were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

EILERS, DELBERT DALE
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Delbert Dale Eilers, Pharmacist's Mate Second Class, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and conspicuous devotion to duty while serving as a Company Corpsman with the FIRST Marine Raider Battalion during an engagement with enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on the night of 13 - 14 September 1942. When his company was almost completely surrounded by the Japanese and under attack from all directions, Pharmacist's Mate Second Class Eilers, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, constantly exposed himself to enemy fire to care for and evacuate the wounded. As a result of his dauntless courage and outstanding devotion to duty, Pharmacist's Mate Second Class Eilers undoubtedly saved the lives of many of the injured who otherwise might have perished. His courage and efforts in behalf of others at great risk to his own life were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to George Raymond Eisele, Seaman Second Class, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in action against the enemy while serving as a Gunner aboard the Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. SAN FRANCISCO (CA-38), during an engagement with Japanese naval forces near Savo Island in the Solomons on the night of on November 12 and 13 1942. Courageously refusing to abandon his gun in the face of an onrushing Japanese Torpedo Plane, Seaman Second Class Eisele, with cool determination and utter disregard for his own personal safety, kept blazing away until the hostile craft plunged out of the sky in a flaming dive and crashed on his station. His grim perseverance and relentless devotion to duty in the face of certain death were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave up his own life in the defense of his country.

Eisenhart, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier- based Navy Dive Bomber in Bombing Squadron FIFTEEN (VB-15), embarked from the U.S.S. ESSEX (CV-9), in action against enemy Japanese surface forces in the vicinity of the Philippine Islands during the Battle of Leyte Gulf on 25 October 1944. Fearlessly pressing home his attack to low altitude in the face of accurate and intense antiaircraft fire from the formidable enemy disposition, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Eisenhart succeeded in scoring one of eight direct hits upon a Japanese aircraft carrier of CHITOSE class, in a strike so effectively disposed that the resulting successive hits upon this ship caused it's almost immediate sinking. Undaunted in the face of relentless, devastating antiaircraft fire, he rendered gallant service during the bitterly fought engagement in which all carriers, a light cruiser and a destroyer of the enemy's task force were sunk and heavy bomb and torpedo damage inflicted on battleships and other important naval units. By his daring airmanship, exceptional courage and steadfast devotion to duty through a perilous assignment, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Eisenhart contributed materially to the sinking of this valuable enemy fighting unit and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

EKAR, JOSEPH ANTON

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Joseph Anton Ekar, Ensign, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession while serving as Commander of the Ready Duty Patrol Plane, Fleet Air Detachment, San Diego, California, on 10 January 1942. Ensign Ekar accomplished the successful rescue at sea of Captain Graham E. Benson, USMC, and Corporal C. S. Pierson, USMC, who, after a forced landing of their plane, were adrift at sea in a small aviation emergency rubber boat. When the rescue boat he directed to their aid became disabled, he skillfully and courageously landed his plane in a very unfavorable sea and took off parallel to the swells without injury to any personnel or to his plane.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Clarence E. Ekstrom, Captain, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the Escort Carrier U.S.S. SAVO ISLAND (CVE-78), in a surface engagement with a large task force of the Japanese Fleet near the Island of Samar in Philippine waters during the Battle of Leyte Gulf on 25 October 1944. Captain Ekstrom handled his ship at all times in a highly expert and seamanlike manner. By his courage, skill in combat, and determination, he gave encouragement to his officers and men and to his air personnel in a manner that caused his action to be largely instrumental in the defeat of the Japanese task force. Captain Ekstrom's inspiring leadership and the valiant devotion to duty of his command contributed in large measure to the outstanding success of these vital missions and reflect great credit upon the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Arthur G. Elder, Lieutenant, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Executive Officer and Pilot of a Navy PBY Patrol Plane in Patrol-Bombing Squadron ONE HUNDRED SEVENTEEN (VPB-117), in action on 25 March 1945 while deployed over Saigon. On that date Lieutenant Elder conducted an attack on shipping in Saigon Harbor, French Indochina, and sank three large merchant vessels. Two escort vessels and 20 small merchant vessels were also heavily strafed despite intense antiaircraft fire thrown up by the escort vessels. Although Lieutenant Elder's aircraft was badly hit and several crewmen wounded, he managed to return to base, shooting down one enemy fighter on the way home. His outstanding courage and determined skill were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Robert Martin Elder, Ensign, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Dive Bomber of Bombing Squadron THREE (VB-3), embarked from the U.S.S. YORKTOWN (CV-5), during the "Air Battle of Midway," against enemy Japanese forces on 4 - 6 June 1942. WASP (CV-7), during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands on 7 to 8 August 1942. Leading the first dive-bombing attack against hostile positions on the islands of Gavutu and Tanambogo, Lieutenant Commander Eldridge, with cool courage and utter disregard for his own safety, personally destroyed Japanese gun emplacements in front of the Marine Landing Area on Gavutu Island, thereby making possible a successful landing in that area. The President of the United States takes pride in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to John Eldridge, Jr. (0-061105), Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Fighter Plane and Commanding Officer of Fighting Squadron SEVENTY-ONE (VF-71), embarked from the U.S.S. WASP (CV-18), during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Area during the period 5 through 14 October 1942. Landing in an early morning flight against a Japanese seaplane base at Rekata Bay, Santa Isabel Island on 5 October, Lieutenant Commander Eldridge launched a vigorous attack, inflicting considerable damage on enemy float planes and anti-aircraft emplacements in spite of extremely adverse weather conditions. Returning to Guadalcanal after being rescued from a forced landing, he led several daring scout-bombing attacks against enemy ships, causing fires and, in one known instance, sinking a Japanese destroyer. His expert airmanship and outstanding devotion to duty contributed materially to the defense of our positions in this area.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to William Arthur Elings, Ensign, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Torpedo Plane in Torpedo Squadron EIGHTY-FOUR (VT-84), embarked from the U.S.S. BUNKER HILL (CV-17), during an attack against the Japanese Battleship Yamato off Kyushu, Japan, on 7 April 1945. Displaying great skill and courage, Ensign Elings pressed home his torpedo attack and despite extremely intense antiaircraft fire from all caliber weapons on the battleship and the surrounding screen. His torpedo was one of thirteen dropped in a concerted attack by the squadron, which cored at least nine hits on the battleship almost simultaneously. Without flinching he carried his torpedo in to close range through adverse weather conditions and intense enemy fire which included the main batteries, contributing materially to the complete destruction of the capital ship a short time later. His courage, skill, determination and unswerving devotion to duty were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

ELLIS, WILLIAM STEPHEN

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to William Stephen Ellis, Lieutenant, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession while serving on board the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. FRANKLIN (CV-13), which was striking the Japanese home islands in the vicinity of Kobe, Japan, on 19 March 1945. When the FRANKLIN was struck by enemy bombs which caused tremendous fires and explosions among a large number of fully armed and fueled planes both on the flight deck and in the hangar, Lieutenant Ellis led others into smoke and fire-gutted spaces below decks and succeeded in keeping certain auxiliary power plants in operation so that the ship was able to get underway. The conduct of Lieutenant Ellis throughout this action reflects great credit upon himself, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Joseph F. Enright, Commander, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. ARCHERFISH (SS-311), during the FIFTH War Patrol of that vessel in enemy Japanese-controlled waters in the Pacific War Area, from 30 October to 15 December 1944. Quick to act when his ship contacted a high-speed Japanese Task Force on 28 November Commander Enright commenced an all-out pursuit, maneuvering his vessel at top speed to outdistance the zigzagging enemy aircraft carrier. After six hours of determined chase, he succeeded in bringing the submarine to a favorable attack position ahead and, submerging to attack, expertly directed his ship in penetrating the escort screen. Still undetected by the enemy, he launched a full torpedo salvo against the carrier to strike the target with four torpedoes and inflict severe damage which later sank the carrier. Although counterattacked by his victim's escorts, he skillfully evaded all hostile countermeasures and brought the Archer Fish safe to port. By his courage and determination in the face of overwhelming odds, Commander Enright contributed materially to the success of his vessel in sinking the 72,000-ton Japanese carrier. His leadership and zealous devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

HANCOCK (CV-19), in the attack on major units of the Japanese fleet in Kure Harbor, Japan, consisting of battleships, carriers and heavy cruisers, on 24 July 1945. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Frederick Luther Erickson, Seaman First Class, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in action against the enemy while serving as Helmsman aboard U.S.S. LST FOUR HUNDRED SEVENTY-THREE (LST-473), during operations against Lae, New Guinea, on 4 September 1943. Seaman First Class Erickson was severely wounded by the impact of a direct bomb hit which blew him out of the pilot house. Upon recovering consciousness he returned to his battle station, and, despite acute pain and waning strength, gamely endeavored to hold the stricken ship on her course until he was relieved by one of his shipmates. The conduct of Seaman First Class Erickson throughout this action contributed in large measure to the outstanding success of these vital missions and reflect great credit upon the United States Naval Service.

SANTEE (ACV-9), during the occupation of French Morocco from 8 to 11 November 1942. When his plane was badly damaged by gunfire during a raid upon a convoy of hostile trucks, Lieutenant Ershler, although severely nauseated by escaping gasoline fumes, gamely continued his flight to an enemy airdrome where he damaged several planes by strafing and scored a direct bomb hit on a hangar. Subsequently pressing home aerial attacks against hostile troops and machine-gun emplacements, he contributed materially to the action which forced hostile troops to retire to new positions. Ettinger, Lieutenant, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Commander of a Navy Patrol Plane and Commanding Officer of Patrol-Bombing Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-ONE (VPB-121), in action against enemy Japanese forces off the coast of Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands, on 3 August 1945. When a downed American P-51 Pilot was found floating in the water near the enemy-occupied island of Sagami Nada, Lieutenant Ettinger, in company with another Patrol Plane of his squadron, engaged enemy aircraft that attempted to intercept a U.S. submarine attempting to recover the downed pilot. In this engagement Lieutenant Ettinger and his crew shot down two of the eight attacking enemy fighters, continuing on station and in aerial combat for forty minutes until the pilot was successfully recovered. His outstanding courage and determined skill were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Carrying on to the very last, he finally succumbed in the officers' booth, where his body was found with one hand still on the telephone. His courageous dedication to duty, maintained with unyielding determination to the very instant of his death, was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. FAULKNER, CLARK WOODS

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Clark Woods Faulkner, Lieutenant, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession while Commanding Motor Torpedo Boat FORTY (PT-40), which together with PT-43 and PT-112 engaged a force of enemy destroyers off the Guadalcanal coast on the night of 11 - 12 January 1943. The group attacked three destroyers only a few hundred yards off the enemy occupied coast during which time Lieutenant Faulkner made a daring and determined approach in to 500 yards before firing his torpedoes which scored two hits probably sinking the ship. Lieutenant Faulkner made good his escape without casualties through a hail of shellfire which sank the other two motor torpedo boats. On the night of 1 - 2 February 1943, Lieutenant Faulkner in Command of Motor Torpedo Boat ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-FOUR (PT-124), engaged one of a group of nineteen enemy destroyers in the same Guadalcanal area and with great skill scored two torpedo hits from a distance of 1,000 yards causing the destroyer to burst into flame and burn for over three hours. The exceptional bravery, aggressive leadership, and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Faulkner were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Eddy L. Fayle, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Torpedo Plane in Torpedo Squadron EIGHT (VT-8), embarked from the U.S.S. SARATOGA (CV-3), during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Campaign on 24 August 1942. In an unsupported aerial torpedo raid against a Japanese task force, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Fayle pressed home his attack through a bursting hail of fire from hostile anti-aircraft batteries. He contributed to the relentless fighting spirit and aggressive courage which enabled his squadron to score one certain hit and two estimated hits on an enemy aircraft carrier. His superb airmanship and unyielding devotion to duty aided greatly in the defeat of a persistent foe and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Joseph Feeney, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commander of the Armed Guard Crew aboard the tanker S.S. CITIES SERVICE MISSOURI, when that ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Caribbean Sea on the night of 12 March 1943. Proceeding aft to take his station with the gun crew after the first torpedo had struck the vessel, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Feeney was suddenly hurled into the air by the force of a second torpedo hit and was severely injured. Despite the incapacitating effect of this injury, and with heroic courage, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Feeney dragged himself to the bridge, where he manned the phones to the battery and continued directing the fire of the gun until the crew reported that the ammunition had been rendered ineffectual by water, and the order to abandon ship was given. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Navy of the United States. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Frank Wesley Fenno, Jr., Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. TROUT (SS-202), in successfully completing an unusual and special mission through enemy controlled waters for the United States War Department during the month of January 1942. Upon completion of this mission, and while returning to Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, through enemy infested waters, with a special cargo on board, the U.S.S. Trout attacked and sank a 5,000 ton enemy merchant vessel on 10 February 1942. Furthermore, on the same date, upon being attacked by torpedoes from an enemy patrol vessel, the U.S.S. TROUT attacked and sank the enemy attacking ship, and continued her voyage to Pearl Harbor, arriving there without damage to material or injury to personnel throughout the hazardous operations.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Navy Cross to Frank Wesley Fenno, Jr., Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. TROUT (SS-202), during the THIRD War Patrol of that vessel in enemy controlled waters during the period 24 March 1942 to 17 May 1942. WHIPPOORWILL (AM-35), in combat against enemy Japanese forces during the bombardment of Cavite Navy Yard, Philippine Islands, on 10 December 1941. Despite the fires and frequent explosion of air flasks and war heads, Lieutenant Commander Ferriter while in command of a small auxiliary craft, displayed extraordinary courage and determination in proceeding into the danger zone and towing disabled surface craft alongside docks to a safe zone. This prompt and daring action undoubtedly saved the crews from serious danger and saved the vessels aided for further war service. Engaging in numerous armed reconnaissance missions against Japanese shipping, Lieutenant Commander Fisher gallantly participated in many attacks on heavily escorted enemy convoys, sinking a large merchant vessel, a large tanker and five motor launches, inflicting heavy damage on an escort vessel, a large tanker and a large merchant vessel, probably destroying an armed enemy vessel and a midget submarine and, thereby contributing greatly to the destruction of enemy shipping. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Harold Carlton Fitz, Captain, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the Light Cruiser U.S.S. SANTA FE (CL-60), while serving with the fleet in action against enemy Japanese forces off the southern coast of Honshu, Japan, on 19 March 1945. Captain Fitz brought his damaged cruiser alongside the U.S.S. FRANKLIN, lying crippled in the water as the result of enemy action, and held his hazardous position to effect the rescue of great numbers of personnel. Simultaneously engaging his ship in fighting fires on board the disabled craft and heaving in on the towline from another cruiser, he aided the FRANKLIN to withdraw without further damage and contributed his gallant service until the carrier could effect emergency repairs and return to port under her own power. Captain Fitz' inspiring leadership and the valiant devotion to duty of his command contributed in large measure to the outstanding success of this vital mission and reflects great credit upon the United States Naval Service.

LCI(L), FIVE (LCI(L)-5), during the amphibious assault on the Island of Sicily on 10 July 1943. Determining the depth over sand bars by swimming toward the beach within hazardous range of hostile guns ashore, Yeoman Second Class Fletcher located a suitable beaching point for disembarking our attack troops. Upon completing this dangerous task and observing several soldiers perilously close to drowning, he risked his life under an unrelenting shower of deadly machine-gun bullets to swim through extremely heavy surf and bring the helpless men to safety. Through his courageous efforts and heroic endurance in the face of withering fire, he was able to accomplish the successful rescue of the soldiers who otherwise might have perished. Yeoman Second Class Fletcher's exceptional courage and valiant devotion to duty in the face of grave danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

BARB (SS-220), on the NINTH War Patrol of that submarine during the period 4 August 1944 to 9 October 1944, in enemy controlled waters of the Luzon Straits. During this aggressive patrol in enemy-controlled waters, Lieutenant Commander Fluckey intelligently planned and executed attacks which resulted in the sinking of a tanker, two freighters and an enemy warship, totally 42,000 tons. In addition, he effected the rescue of 14 British and Australian prisoners of war who were survivors of a torpedoed enemy transport which had been taking them from Singapore to the Japanese empire. His outstanding resourcefulness and capability in providing for their care and the treatment of the sick and wounded rendered it possible for all to return to port safely. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to his officers and men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Flying as wingman on a search and attack mission when an enemy task force was sighted and his division was assigned an aircraft carrier as a target, Lieutenant Flynt defied the withering barrages of antiaircraft fire to dive low over the hostile warship and release his bombs at perilously low altitude to score direct hits which started fires and contributed materially to the infliction of extensive damage on the Japanese vessel. Lieutenant Commander Forsythe went to the assistance of the wounded and administered medical aid, undeterred by devastating mortar fire. He continued ministering to the injured, despite multiple wounds from a mortar shell, until severe pain finally forced him to cease. Although fully aware that postponed medical attention would gravely impair his chance of recovery, he refused medical assistance while other casualties were in need of care, and later succumbed from his wounds. By his courage, determination, and untiring devotion to duty, Lieutenant Commander Forsythe saved many lives. His professional ability, courage, and inspiring devotion to duty upheld the highest traditions of the Medical Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

While under intense and prolonged aerial bombardment, Lieutenant Commander Fox, with superior judgment and expert seamanship, maneuvered his ship to effect the rescue of 250 survivors from the Aircraft Carrier HORNET. Four days later, under extreme darkness and adverse weather conations, he brought the Barton into the vicinity of dangerous reefs and despite imminent threat of hostile submarine attacks, picked up stranded crews and passengers from four large patrol planes, without loss of personnel. CHEROKEE (AT-66), during the assault on and occupation of French Morocco from 8 to 11 November 1942. Assigned the extremely dangerous task of cutting through an enemy obstruction in order that the U.S.S. DALLAS could navigate up the Sebou River in order to land raiders near a strategic airport, Gunner's Mate Second Class Freeman and his shipmates, on the night of 9 November, proceeded with grim determination toward their objective. Despite the treacherous surf, he and his comrades skillfully and courageously accomplished their hazardous mission of cutting the cables at the mouth of the river, as guns from the French fort opened fire. Countering the enemy's attack until out of range, Gunner's Mate Second Class Freeman and the other members of his party, in spite of the enormous breakers which battered their boat, brought her back to safety. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

FUELLING, JAMES LOUIS
Synopsis:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to James Louis Fuelling, Lieutenant Commander (MC), U.S. Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession, extraordinary courage, and disregard of personal danger while serving as a Medical Officer on board the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. FRANKLIN (CV-13), which was striking the Japanese home islands in the vicinity of Kobe, Japan, on 19 March 1945. On that date the FRANKLIN was struck by enemy bombs which caused tremendous fires and explosions among a large number of fully armed and fueled planes both on the flight deck and in the hangar. By his courage, determination, and untiring devotion to duty, Lieutenant Commander Fuelling saved many lives. His professional ability, courage, and inspiring devotion to duty upheld the highest traditions of the Medical Corps and the United States Naval Service.

FUNK, HAROLD NATHAN

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander [then Lieutenant Commander] Harold Nathan Funk, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Fighter Plane and Leader of a Three-Plane Division in Fighting Squadron TWENTY-THREE (VF-23), during an engagement with thirty-two twin-engined enemy Japanese bombers with escorting fighters which were heading for an attack on our shipping in Leyte Gulf, on 24 October 1944. Skillfully attacking this numerically superior force, Commander Funk personally shot down FOUR bombers and one fighter while his Division mates destroyed three more enemy aircraft and so disrupted the enemy formation that other friendly planes were able to destroy the remaining planes. At another time, he aided in destroying a large number of enemy planes on the ground. By his courage and leadership, he contributed greatly to the success of our forces in this area and his devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

FURER, ALBERT BRELY

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Albert Brely Furer, Lieutenant, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Torpedo Plane in Torpedo Squadron FIVE (VT-5), embarked from the U.S.S. YORKTOWN (CV-5), in action against enemy Japanese forces at Tulagi Harbor on 4 May 1942, and in the Battle of the Coral Sea on 7 and 8 May 1942. These attacks, vigorously and persistently pressed home in the face of heavy anti-aircraft fire, and on 8 May opposed also by enemy fighters, resulted in the sinking or damaging of at least eight enemy Japanese vessels at Tulagi and the sinking of one carrier and the sinking or severe damaging of another in the Coral Sea. Lieutenant Furer's conscientious devotion to duty and gallant self-command against formidable odds were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

FURNEY, MAYNARD MELVON

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Maynard Melvon Furney, Lieutenant, U.S. Navy (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Fighter Plane and Section Leader in Fighting Squadron FORTY-ONE (VF-41), embarked from the U.S.S. RANGER (CV-4), during the assault on and occupation of French Morocco from 8 to 11 November 1942. Through intense enemy anti-aircraft fire, Lieutenant Furney, on 8 November, led a section of an eighteen-plane flight in a destructive attack on the Gazes airdrome. With courage and skill he provided cover for other units of the flight and, when our planes were attacked, he unhesitatingly engaged the hostile fighter craft, outmaneuvering and sending two down in flames. In the subsequent six flights in which he participated during the following two days, Lieutenant Furney, in addition to bombing and strafing shore batteries at El Hank, also led his four-plane section in strafing two submarines and patrolling over the RANGER and transports at Fedala. His aggressive leadership, relentless fighting spirit, and heroic devotion to duty at great personal risk contributed materially to the reduction of hostile reconnaissance in this area and the success which our forces realized in accomplishing vital objectives.

FYFE, JOHN K.
Synopsis:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to John K. Fyfe, Commander, U.S. Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. BATFISH (SS-310), on the SIXTH War Patrol of that submarine during the period 30 December 1944 to 3 March 1945, in enemy controlled waters at Luzon, in the Philippine Islands. Through his experience and sound judgment Commander Fyfe brought his ship safely back to port. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to his officers and men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
