The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Kenneth U. Eakens (0-526512), First Lieutenant (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 413th Infantry Regiment, 104th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 26 February 1945 in Germany. Although twice wounded, Lieutenant Eakens led his platoon in assaulting a huge, strongly defended enemy castle. Defying intense enemy fire, his small group routed the enemy and captured the objective by the sheer force and audacity of his platoon's onslaught. After securing the objective Lieutenant Eakens encountered two enemy sentries who, from hidden positions, commanded him to halt. EGGLESTON, LEONARD L.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Leonard L. Eggleston, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 26 July 1944, in France. On that date, near Jolimment, France, the enemy launched a combined infantry and tank attack against the left flank of A Company, 121st Infantry. Private Eggleston, a machine gunner, fired on the advancing enemy infantrymen repulsing their attack. During this severe enemy action, he was wounded by a German hand grenade. Still at his gun, he continued to fire until again wounded by return fire from the guns of an advancing enemy tank. Private Eggleston, heedless of his wounds, fired the last available round from a rocket launcher at the tank. Upon missing, he then seized an M-1 rifle and fired an anti-tank grenade which hit the turret of the tank forcing it to withdraw. During an attack on a vital, heavily defended hill Lieutenant Ehrhardt exhibited heroic leadership in taking the objective and inspiring his outnumbered men in a gallant defense against three tank-led enemy counterattacks. The following day, although wounded, he continued to direct his men in resisting powerful enemy attempts to dislodge them. When a second serious wound forced him to be evacuated he courageously insisted on furnishing his battalion commander with clear, detailed information on the disposition and tactics of the enemy. When his tank was disabled, First Lieutenant Erickson climbed to the deck in full view of the enemy to give his crew cover as they extricated themselves. Although wounded by an enemy six-man bazooka team, he killed all six with his pistol, then dismounted and fearlessly moved across enemy terrain killing many enemy soldiers in foxholes and wiping out points of resistance, clearing the way for an advance by his troops. In the performance of this courageous act, First Lieutenant Erickson was killed but the men of his command, inspired by this outstanding exhibition of bravery and daring, continued the attack and successfully achieved their objective. FAIR, LELAND B.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Leland B. Fair (0-558789), Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 4 July 1945, near Tuli, Mindanao, Philippine Islands. On this day as an Infantry company was attacking along a road leading from Kibangay to Tuli, the leading squad came under intense enemy machine gun fire from pill boxes and from a light machine gun mounted in a tree to the front. Mortar fire also fell on the platoon, and four men were killed instantly and six others were wounded by the initial fire. The fire was so intense that it was impossible to give medical attention to the wounded men who lay on the road in the path of the enemy fire. Second Lieutenant Fair volunteered to take a squad through the jungle to outflank the suspected locations of the enemy from the left. The squad approached the enemy positions from their right rear, and as they came near the first pillbox they received heavy machine gun, rifle, and grenade fire. Second Lieutenant Fair attacked the pillbox, approaching it from the blind side. With complete disregard for his own safety, he stood in full view of the enemy, fired his rifle and threw grenades into the embrasure, killing the enemy occupants. The men of the squad were inspired by this heroic action and followed Second Lieutenant Fair in advancing on the next pillbox. Four of the enemy pillboxes now brought fire to bear on the squad with machine guns, rifles, and grenades. Second Lieutenant Fair directed the fire of the lead scout and the automatic rifleman on the central pillbox, then left his position and rushed forward under their covering fire to the pillbox. He threw two grenades into the emplacement and disposed of its crew. After disabling the enemy gun in the emplacement, Second Lieutenant Fair moved toward the third pillbox. As he approached his right hand was injured by fragments of a Jap grenade. Disregarding his wounds, he ordered his men to cover him, and advanced on a fourth pillbox, exposing himself to enemy fire during his rush. He pitched a grenade into the emplacement and called back for the rocket launcher. When the bazooka man arrived, Second Lieutenant Fair directed protective rifle fire on the pillbox, meanwhile loading the bazooka himself. The first rocket blew a small hole in the top of the pillbox and Second Lieutenant Fair tossed grenades into the emplacement through the hole of the roof. He then attacked the remaining pillboxes and destroyed another light machine gun in one of them. Eight pillboxes were destroyed and 22 Japs were killed. Before his squad could leave the area, however, Japanese mortar fire was brought to bear, and two members of the patrol were wounded. A litter was improvised and the wounded were removed. After he had returned to the company and reported the action, it was determined that possibly one forward pillbox might have been missed. Second Lieutenant Fair, although fatigued from the first assault and bleeding from the wound in his right hand, volunteered to return to the enemy area. He took command of a squad from another company to make his second assault, and he moved out in front of the first scout until he arrived at the fortified area. He deployed the squad on the edge of the pillbox area and led them through the abaca. Several additional pillboxes were spotted. Second Lieutenant Fair placed his men in a position to concentrate their fire on the pillboxes, when enemy mortar fire began to fall ahead of the squad. Despite the risk involved, Second Lieutenant Fair moved boldly and aggressively to the pillboxes, and determined that the enemy had withdrawn. After satisfying himself that there were no more in the vicinity, he evacuated the casualties from the first assault. Only then did he agree to submit to medical treatment. By his brilliant and aggressive leadership, and the resolute courage he exhibited in these actions, Second Lieutenant Fair inspired his men to extraordinary efforts and achievements. His matchless feats of valor won for him the respect and admiration of all, and are consistent with the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 24th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Felkins, Jr. (0-1167832), Captain (Artillery), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 387th Field Artillery Battalion, 104th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 31 October 1944 and 1 November 1944, in Holland. Captain Felkins, displaying great personal courage, voluntarily led a patrol across a river and into dangerous enemy territory to drive off hostile troops and tanks which had taken a heavy toll of an isolated infantry battalion. He personally adjusted a devastating artillery concentration upon the enemy positions which killed many Germans and forced the withdrawal of several tanks. As the artillery fire lifted, Captain Felkins, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, advanced far ahead of the patrol while subjected to intense machine gun fire. As he prepared to lead a charge upon the enemy, he was fatally wounded. Captain Felkins' heroic actions resulted in the safe withdrawal of 120 men, many of whom were severely wounded, and enabled two companies to maintain their critical position until the main bridgehead was later established. His intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 104th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

When Second Lieutenant Ferguson reached the shore he observed that the initial assault units were pinned down by the intense and heavy enemy rifle, machine gun and artillery fire, and that further advance was also blocked by an extensive barbed wire obstacle. With complete disregard for his own safety, Second Lieutenant Ferguson bravely moved forward under this heavy fire with a Bangalore torpedo with which he blew a gap in the barbed wire. He then rose from his position and, while leading his troops through this gap to the enemy positions, was wounded. On the morning of 6 May 1943, the 33d Artillery Regiment was given the mission of taking Hill 139 in the vicinity of Beja, Tunisia. Because of the heavy machine gun and mortar fire covering all approaches, it was necessary to attack before daylight. Second Lieutenant Ferris, as artillery forward observer with the assault elements, crawled forward across open terrain swept by withering enemy machine gun fire to a point well beyond our lines. Realizing the danger of his mission, he had ordered his men to remain behind while he advanced with a wire reel and telephone until he was killed. The platoon encountered German 88 anti-tank guns. His tank took a direct hit; 3 other tanks were also hit and nine members of the platoon were killed. Although his right foot was gone, he pulled his gunner to safety. After fighting off German infantry soldiers, flowers ordered the survivors to withdraw but he stayed on the battlefield with two other wounded men and requested that medics be sent. Before they could be rescued, Germans took the field. The next day, American artillery bombarded the area. One of the shells exploded by Lieutenant Flowers and took off his left leg just below the knee. He spent another night in the field. During an attack, Lieutenant Foley moved with his attacking groups, coordinating their movement and directing their fire with such complete disregard to enemy fire that he imbued his men with much courage and daring. He controlled the action of his three platoons with assurance, leading the attack and driving the enemy from the hill. He reorganized his company and staved off six vicious attacks by a determined enemy while the company position was raked with artillery and automatic fire. The second day, enemy infiltration had encircled his position and cut off all communication and supply routes to battalion. A redistribution of ammunition revealed only five rounds per rifle and none for the automatic weapons. When called upon by the enemy to surrender his position, Lieutenant Foley defiantly refused, and continued to hold the hill. For five days, Lieutenant Foley defended his position under ceaseless artillery and mortar bombardment, repelling attacks by vastly superior forces and countering aggressive enemy patrol action, both day and night. The tireless, determined efforts of Lieutenant Foley in the attack and subsequently in the conduct of the defense, together with his exemplary leadership, gave much encouragement to his men and played a large part in the stubborn defense of this position against a numerically superior enemy. This accomplishment effectively weakened the enemy in this sector and hastened their eventual withdrawal. Lieutenant Foley rendered a vital and distinguished service in the defense against determined German offensive action aimed at seizing the key terrain south of Nijmegen. Staff Sergeant Frantz was directing the limited withdrawal of his platoon under fire when two enemy machine-guns opened fire on his position. He was wounded in the stomach by the first burst of machine-gun fire, making it necessary for him to hold his intestines in with one hand. He seized a BAR and opened fire on the enemy positions, allowing his men to withdraw safely, and he was soon alone in an open field. Still holding his abdomen closed with one hand, he began crawling to safety when a sniper opened fire at him. Staff Sergeant Frantz located the sniper and killed him. He continued his crawl and reached a ditch where he lay until dark. He then walked two miles to the aid station. Disregarding his own safety and need for medical attention, Staff Sergeant Frantz saved his platoon from possible annihilation. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to John D. Frederick (0-12453), Colonel (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 23 February 1945, at Manila, Philippine Islands. Colonel Frederick, in command of an infantry regiment, was charged with the mission of attacking and seizing Fort Santiago and a section of the Walled City of Manila. This difficult and hazardous maneuver demanded a daylight crossing of the Pasig River at a point three hundred seventy-five feet in width, followed immediately by direct assault on a strongly fortified bastion under constant enemy observation and defended by heavy fire from many automatic weapons. Colonel Frederick led his regiment with such outstanding success that it not only seized its initial objective, but continued to advance for seven hundred yards into the Walled City itself. In preparation and execution of this attack Colonel Frederick's tactical skill, gallant leadership and personal courage were of the highest order, and exemplified the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States, reflecting great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Paul H. Frederick, Captain (Infantry) [then First Lieutenant], U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 142d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on, 22 - 23 September and from 29 September through 2 October 1944, at Remiremont, France. Captain Frederick displayed indomitable courage, sound judgment and unusual devotion to duty in successfully carrying out his mission against an enemy strongpoint. After engaging and clearing all enemy opposition from the town of Remiremont, for three days he led his small group through enemy territory, and, by his inspiring leadership, saved his men from being killed or captured. On one occasion, in an encounter with a hostile force, he and one of his men killed six enemy soldiers, wounded four and captured one. Although the group was subjected to heavy artillery and mortar barrages, he encouraged his exhausted men forward, and led them safely back to friendly troops. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Robert Tryon Frederick (0-17196), Brigadier General, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy as Commander of the 1st Special Service Force, in action against enemy forces during the period 10 January to 13 January 1944, near Mount Vischiataro, Italy. While commanding his own organization and an attached task force, Brigadier General Frederick made a personal reconnaissance to determine hostile positions prior to an attack. Far in advance of the foremost elements of his command, under enemy machine gun, mortar and artillery fire, he probed enemy defenses and selected a covered route of approach for his troops. While leading his men against the enemy, he continued his reconnaissance in advance of his forward troops to obtain information from which to plan the development of the attack. Operating in terrain almost devoid of cover and concealment, he organized a surprise attack that quickly drove the enemy from a strategically important position. Brigadier General Frederick's constant presence under enemy fire forward of his own troops proved an inspiration to them and a decisive factor in the accomplishment of his mission. His heroism, aggressiveness, and tactical skill exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

FRYER, GIBSON
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Gibson Fryer (7080240), Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944, in France. A small reconnaissance patrol, of which Private Pryor was a member, penetrated deep into enemy held territory. When well within the enemy lines, the patrol was suddenly brought under the fire of a deeply entrenched German mortar company. Despite the lack of cover and concealment from the intense enemy fire, Private Fryer, accompanied by another man, moved forward to close with the enemy. He worked his way to within twenty yards of the enemy position at which point he threw hand grenades into the enemy dugouts causing heavy casualties. Without hesitation, he and his comrade immediately charged into the enemy emplacements and fearlessly closed with the enemy forces. In this attack several of the enemy were killed and twelve prisoners were taken. The personal bravery, aggressiveness and courage displayed by Private Fryer in the face of superior enemy forces reflects great credit on himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.

FUJIWARA, YOSHIMI RICHARD

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Yoshimi Richard Fujiwara (30104334), Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, attached to the 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 20 October 1944, in the vicinity of Bruyeres, France. In attempting to flank an enemy strongpoint defended by three machine gun sections and other automatic weapons, the platoon in which Staff Sergeant Fujiwara was a squad leader was pinned down and virtually surrounded in a long narrow strip of undergrowth which offered concealment but no cover. Having engaged the enemy in a fire fight, the platoon found itself further menaced by machine gun and shell fire from an approaching force of two Mark IV tanks, supported by two columns of fifty enemy troops. Realizing that drastic action was necessary to avert the complete annihilation of the platoon, Sergeant Fujiwara climbed a slight knoll in the area and attempted with anti-tank grenades to halt the tanks' progress. Finding that this fire was ineffective, he ordered the bazooka team to relinquish its weapon to him. Aware that the flash from the bazooka would reveal his position, he took deliberate aim at the leading tank and fired, scoring a partial hit. The tank, though temporarily slowed, continued its advance and raked his position with return fire from its machine gun. Racing against time and ignoring the enemy's awareness of his location, he continued to expose himself to the ever approaching tanks until he succeeded, with his fifth attempt, in putting one out of action. Upon seeing this, the second Mark IV rapidly withdrew, followed by its accompanying troops. Sergeant Fujiwara's fearlessness, cool-handed aggressiveness and consideration for the lives and safety of his comrades at the risk of his own life exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 36th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

FULLER, JOSEPH P.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Joseph P. Fuller (20725112), Technical Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 16 July 1944, near La Raoulerie, Normandy, France. When his company was held up by heavy enemy machine gun and mortar fire directed from emplacements along its left flank, Technical Sergeant Fuller voluntarily, and acting alone, crawled forward with a telephone to direct artillery fire upon the enemy positions. He drew so near the enemy that he could hear their voices in conversation and it was necessary for him to whisper directions over the telephone in order to prevent discovery. He was in effect directing friendly artillery fire on his own position. The resulting fire was so effective that the enemy positions were broken; ten enemy soldiers ran into the American lines and the remainder withdrew. Technical Sergeant Fuller then proceeded to a nearby tank destroyer and directed its cannon fire on the fleeing enemy. When the supply of shells exhausted, he exposed himself from the turret of the tank destroyer and fired its machine gun at the enemy. Because of the extraordinary heroism of Technical Sergeant Fuller and his disregard for personal safety while directing friendly artillery fire on his own position his company made a successful advance. FUNK, LEONARD ALFRED, JR.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Leonard Alfred Funk, Jr. (33070198), First Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces on 18 September 1944, near Voxhill, Holland. With great courage, intrepidity, and on his own initiative, Sergeant Funk lead a three man patrol against a German flak battery of three 20-mm. guns which were firing on American gliders then circling to land. He drove off all enemy security around the guns and led an assault which killed approximately twenty members of the crews and inflicted other causalities. The flak guns were silenced before effective fire could be placed upon the aircraft, due to the courageous and heroic actions of Sergeant Funk. The courageous action of Sergeant Funk contributed, in large part to the prompt seizure of his company objective and assistance in driving the enemy from the landing zone. His initiative, outstanding bravery, and strong personal leadership, despite overwhelming enemy superiority in both numbers and firepower, enabled him to render a distinguished served in the destruction of enemy resistance. First Sergeant Funk's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 82d Airborne Division, and the United States Army.
