HACKARD, CLIFFORD T.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Clifford T. Hackard (0-1296023), Captain (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while Commanding an Infantry Company of the 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 8 November 1944, in Germany. During a vicious enemy counterattack spearheaded by three Tiger tanks, Captain Hackard awaited the approach of the tanks and when one came within fifty yards of his observation post, he fired his only rocket, knocking the tank out of action. As the crew attempted to escape, Captain Hackard killed or wounded six Germans with accurate rifle fire. Later, Captain Hackard was checking defensive positions of his men when a machine gun opened up. Disregarding intense artillery and machine gun fire, and armed only with a rifle, he advanced toward the weapon, leaped into the emplacement and killed three members of the crew. His outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 28th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

HAFNER, CLAUDE J.
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Claude J. Hafner, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 276th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 February 1945, in France. On the night of 6 February 1945, Lieutenant Hafner's Company was pinned down by intense machine-gun, rifle and grenade fire during an attack near Oetingen, France. Armed with a rocket launcher Lieutenant Hafner fearlessly led two men against the enemy positions and forced the surrender of three Germans in the nearest emplacement. He then moved a squad forward and cleared two connecting dugouts, taking six more prisoners. At daylight he again distinguished himself by leading four men against by-passed positions, killing one of the defenders, bayoneting another and capturing seven prisoners. Lieutenant Hafner's heroic leadership and his inspiring, courageous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 70th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Hairston (38147344), Technical Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 261st Infantry Regiment, 65th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 7 April 1945, in Germany. During an enemy tank-infantry attack at Struth, Germany, Sergeant Hairston gallantly exposed himself at great risk to deadly hostile grenade and rocket fire in order to thwart an attempted seizure of his company command post. Finding that an adjacent company was pinned down by withering enemy machine gun fire, Sergeant Hairston advanced through the enemy fire and eliminated the hostile crew with point-blank sub-machine gun fire. Later in the same action, he gallantly braved both enemy and friendly fire to seek out and lead to safety a besieged group of his comrades and their prisoners. Sergeant Hairston's heroic, intrepid actions and unflinching devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 65th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to James W. Haley (0-24244), Captain (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while Commanding an Infantry Company of the 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944, in France. On D-Day, Captain Haley braved withering enemy artillery, machine gun and rifle fire to reach a large group of confused and disorganized troops who congregated behind a sea wall. He calmly organized them while shells were falling in the immediate area and successfully led them across the beach. As leading elements of his own company moved forward, they encountered a mine field which caused heavy casualties. When the balance of his men froze into position and hesitated to go forward, Captain Haley, with complete disregard for his own life, courageously cleared a path and personally led his men through the obstacle. Continuing its advance, the company was pinned down by a hail of machine gun and small arms fire from a stubborn enemy group in a strongly fortified position. Displaying great personal audacity and conspicuous leadership, he once again defied intense fire and, after preparing his company for an assault, he personally led it in a vicious hand-to-hand and bayonet fight, overpowering the resistance and continuing on to reach his objective. The unswerving devotion to duty, determination and valor displayed by Captain Haley exemplify the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 4th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Hall (34445389), Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 22 November 1944, in Germany. Private Hall was a member of a forward scout party that advanced under intense hostile fire and occupied a group of buildings at Jager Haus, Germany, along the route to the company objective. When the party was subjected to a counterattack he assumed a strategic position and by sustained accurate rifle fire prevented the enemy from infiltrating. Machine gun, mortar, rocket and grenade fire was concentrated against him; he was wounded several times, but he courageously held his post until reinforcements fought their way to him five hours later. Private Hall was killed in action the following day but his heroic stand lives on as an inspiration to his comrades. His fearless determination and supreme devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 4th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

During a long and sustained attack against strong enemy positions a company suffered heavy casualties and lost its combat effectiveness. Because of the critical nature of the situation, First Lieutenant Hanna was ordered to reorganize the company and launch a diversionary attack to lessen pressure on another unit attacking the objective from the opposite direction. First Lieutenant Hanna successfully withdrew the elements of the company still in contact with the enemy, reorganized the unit and led his men in an assault against overwhelming enemy odds. While exposing himself to heavy enemy fire in order to lead his unit, he received a rifle bullet through the chest. In spite of his wound, First Lieutenant Hanna personally led the attack until he collapsed unconscious on the field. His courageous performance and his gallant leadership inspired his men to press the attack and to complete the mission successfully. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Elva Harris (0-1171179), Captain (Field Artillery), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Battery Commander, Battery A, 253d Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 26th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 22 October 1944, in the vicinity of Bezange La Petite, France. Captain Harris was moving forward with the assault waves of Company F, 104th Infantry in order to maintain liaison with them as they attacked an enemy-held hill near Bezange La Petite, France. The Infantry elements he personally led up the hill suffered casualties under intense enemy fire but Captain Harris held his position, aiding the wounded and directing friendly artillery fire against the enemy. He remained on the hill under continuous fire for forty-eight hours, many times fearlessly exposing himself to direct enemy fire in order to obtain accurate observation. His courageous actions inspired the infantrymen with him to hold the position while he continued to direct the artillery. The heroism of Captain Harris, his courage and loyal devotion to duty, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 26th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Captain Harris, while under heavy enemy fire, personally directed the loading and movement of assault boats which enabled the 504th Parachute Infantry to successfully cross the Waal River and establish the vital Nijmegen bridgehead. Crossing the river in the face of heavy enemy machine gun, 20-mm., and artillery fire in one of the first assault boats of the initial assault wave, Captain Harris was painfully wounded in the back and arm but continued to supervise the movement and unloading of the boats. After returning to the south bank of the river he refused medical evacuation but effected rapid and thorough reorganization of the remaining boats and engineer personnel for the crossing of the second wave. While leading the second wave a pontoon near his boat was hit by enemy fire and capsized, but Captain Harris plunged into the river and despite his wounded condition assisted 3 men to other boats. Captain Harris then returned to the south bank and while supervising loading of the third wave, fainted for the loss of blood. Captain Harris' intrepid direction, heroic leadership, and superior professional ability contributed directly to the success of the bridgehead operation and were in keeping with the highest traditions and standards of the United States Army

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Bailey Harrison (37106743), Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company D, 2d Battalion, 502d Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944, in France. While leading his squad, Sergeant Harrison was wounded. However, he refused to be evacuated and continued to lead his squad across one hundred and fifty yards of open country in the face of extremely heavy enemy fire. Despite his painful wounds, he continued to fire as he moved forward and dislodged the enemy from a prepared position, inflicting heavy casualties and successfully leading his squad to a point from which their fire forced the enemy to withdraw. The valor, courage and aggressiveness displayed by Sergeant Harrison reflects great credit on himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.

HARTMAN, HARRY

Company F, 18th Infantry was being held up by heavy sniper and automatic weapons fire from hedgerows which bordered the road along which the company was advancing. Technician Fifth Grade Hartman moved into the seat of his 1/4 ton vehicle and drove it into an exposed but strategic position from which the gunner could deliver fire from the machine gun mounted on the vehicle. Observing that the fire was effective but not decisive, he then moved the vehicle out in front of the company so that he was parallel to the hedgerows. Then, as the gunner fired a continuous stream of fire into the bushes, he drove up the road between the hedgerows until the enemy resistance was destroyed, thereby permitting the advance of his company. The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Willard Harty (32003097), Technical Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 25 November 1944, in Germany. During an intense artillery concentration which wounded his platoon leader and many men, Technical Sergeant Harty immediately assumed command and successfully directed the reorganization of his unit. While assigning defensive positions to his men, he was hit by hostile machine gun fire. Despite painful wounds, he made repeated trips across the fire-swept area and carried many seriously wounded men to safety. As he was attempting to evacuate a helpless soldier from a dangerous area, he was killed by direct tank fire. When stubborn enemy resistance halted the attack, Sergeant Hash moved forward alone, alternately running and crawling, and first hurled a grenade into an opposing machine gun emplacement and then charged the position, killing three occupants. His action inspired his comrades to follow him and he continued to advance, firing into each entrenchment. When two hostile soldiers surrendered to him, and then attempted to fire upon his comrades, he killed them both. The enemy directed intense fire at him, but Sergeant Hash refused to seek cover and was eventually killed while charging enemy positions. The indomitable courage which he displayed was directly responsible for the accomplishment of his company's mission. Private Heim, Assistant Gunner, was stationed at the end of a bridge over the Merderet River as a rocketeer to repel attacks by enemy troops who controlled the other end of the bridge. This position was subject to incessant enemy rifle, machine gun, mortar and artillery fire. After an artillery preparation, the enemy sent an assault force supported by three tanks over the bridge. Though part of the troops withdrew, Private Heim remained at his position until the enemy tanks approached within thirty yards. In spite of the intense fire, Private Heim rose from his position and with the gunner, fired rockets into the three tanks. During the assault on the Bilibid Prison in Manila on 6 February, Chaplain Heindl learned that a soldier lay critically wounded on the top floor of a two-story watch tower under enemy fire. Accompanied by a medical aid-man he entered the tower and climbed to the wounded soldier, who was bleeding profusely and obviously had but a few moments to live. Fully aware that enemy machine guns were trained on the tower, Chaplain Heindl calmly knelt and offered prayers for the dying man. He then carried the body down the ladder and away from the tower. Entering the tower once more, he carried out a second man who lay wounded on the first floor, and under enemy fire helped to carry him to an aid station. On 8 February when his unit was under enemy mortar and rocket fire, Chaplain Heindl observed an officer who was seriously wounded. Without hesitation he left his foxhole, crawled to the officer and dragged him to an aid station. On 11 February when nine men were killed and others wounded during an engagement, he dragged the wounded under fire to comparative safety and administered last rites for the dying. Through his extraordinary heroism and firm faith in the face of all danger, Chaplain Heindl proved himself worthy of the highest tradition of his Church and his military service. Henderson (38271077), Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces on 17 September 1944, in Nijmegen, Holland. Staff Sergeant Henderson was platoon sergeant of the 2d Platoon, Company A, 508th Parachute Infantry, and while on patrol in the city of Nijmegen killed two Germans in hand-to-hand fighting and bayoneted four others. He led his patrol in the accomplishment of three separate missions during the attack by his battalion, during which time he personally destroyed four enemy machine gun positions and assisted in the capture of six prisoners. When the point of the battalion advance became pinned down by enemy machine gun fire in the city of Nijmegen, Staff Sergeant Henderson led a squad from the advance guard and pushed forward, destroying the enemy position. He attacked a circular plaza to his front and cleared it of enemy. Later, at the bridge, he personally destroyed two machine gun positions and caused the crew of the third to withdraw. During this attack he was killed by enemy fire. The gallant and courageous actions of Staff Sergeant Henderson contributed greatly to the destruction of enemy resistance within the city and rendered a most vital and distinguished service in the accomplishment of the division mission. Observing that a vehicle from an adjoining craft had stalled, he voluntarily drove a truck along the fire swept beach, plunged in the water and fastened a cable to the disabled vehicle. After towing it safely to shore he personally carried two wounded occupants to covered positions and rendered first aid. He returned to the beach and amid bursting shells and devastating small arms fire, courageously continued his rescue work. While carrying a wounded solider across the beach to safety a shell landed near this valiant soldier fatally wounding him. His heroic achievements during the initial landing resulted in the saving of many lives and much vital equipment. Across the open fire break less than twenty- five yards away was the hostile weapon. Heroically, he exposed himself, fired his submachine gun directly into the emplacement and killed three members of the crew and wounded two others. Hicks (0-360592), Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy as Commanding Officer, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944, in France. Lieutenant Colonel Hicks, commanding one of the initial assault battalions, landed a the initial stage of the battle in the face of heavy enemy rifle, machine gun and artillery fire. Finding parts of the battalion leaderless and pinned down by the heavy and intense enemy fire, Lieutenant Colonel Hicks, with complete disregard for his own safety, moved p to the foremost elements of his unit and reorganized them for an assault on the enemy strongholds. Courageously, he led a small combat group through a breach in the wire over a thickly strewn mine field and gained the cliff sides directly under the enemy guns. Lieutenant Colonel Hicks personally assaulted and destroyed an enemy pillbox and two machine gun nests with hand grenades. Having placed the men along the cliff, Lieutenant Colonel Hicks then returned to the beach to the cliff heights. From this point, he led a successful assault which gained the battalion's objective. The superior leadership and personal bravery of Lieutenant Colonel Hicks reflects great credit on himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.

An Infantry company supported by tanks launched an attack on the town of Cassino, in the face of concentrated shelling and machine gun fire. Approaching the outskirts of the town, the tank column was halted by a deep ditch across the road which formed an impassable barrier. Enemy guns in Cassino opened fire on the leading tanks. Determined to continue the attack, First Lieutenant Higgins, commanding the infantry company, made his way to the barrier to survey the situation. Ordering his men to take cover from the intense fire, he called for engineer assistance and then single- handedly undertook the task of carrying rocks to fill the ditch. Informed that engineers were not available, Lieutenant Higgins obtained the aid of three volunteers. Two of his assistants were wounded by gun fire. Securing two more men, Higgins and his small group feverishly worked to provide a crossing for the tanks. The leading tank opened fire on enemy gun positions, and the resulting muzzle blast stunned Higgins, but he quickly recovered his composure and continued his difficult task under increasingly intense enemy shelling. A few minutes later enemy artillery set fire to the first and fourth tanks in the column, but within 30 minutes Higgins had completed the crossing. As a result of the courageous determination and resourcefulness of First Lieutenant Higgins, the initial advance into the fortress town of Cassino was affected. HIGHTOWER, LOUIS V.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Louis V. Hightower, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 1st Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 14 February 1943, near Sidi Bou Zid, Tunisia. Lieutenant Colonel Hightower and his tank crew received word that seven enemy tanks were attacking a command post and artillery vehicles which were withdrawing to a new position. His was the only friendly tank in the vicinity but without hesitation, he moved it to protect the helpless unarmored vehicles, and engaged the enemy tanks unaided and alone. After destroying four of the enemy tanks and securing the withdrawal of the friendly column, his own tank received four heavy shots and was set afire. He evacuated the crew and brought them on foot to the friendly defensive position. But for the prompt and heroic action of Lieutenant Colonel Hightower and his tank crew, the command post and a battery of artillery would have been overrun by hostile tanks. His extraordinary heroism, self-sacrifice and devotion to duty is an inspiration to all, worthy of the finest traditions of the Armed Forces and deserving of the highest praise.

Hinkel (36709357), Sergeant (then Private), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with 415th Infantry Regiment, 104th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 26 October 1944. On that date, the battalion in which Sergeant Hinkel was a machine gunner was subjected to an enemy counterattack which had encompassed the left flank of their position. The enemy had brought forward machine guns and, with intense fire, pinned Sergeant Hinkel and his fellow soldiers to the ground. Entirely on his own initiative Sergeant Hinkel seized his own heavy machine gun and, without fear or hesitation dragged it forward more than one hundred yards through intense enemy machine gun and sniper fire. Completely disregarding his own personal safety, he set up his weapon within plain view of the enemy and opened fire. For more than thirty minutes he poured fire into the enemy position, causing many casualties and neutralizing the enemy fire in that sector. Through the valiant, voluntary act of Sergeant Hinkel, a grave threat to his battalion was averted. Sergeant Hinkel's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 104th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Assuming command of his platoon when its leader became a casualty, Technical Sergeant Hogan moved his men into position, encountering heavy enemy resistance, especially from the right and left flanks where machine guns threatened the leading elements of his platoon. Fearlessly dashing forward alone with hand grenades and exposing himself to intense enemy fire, Technical Sergeant Hogan succeeded in eliminating the machine gun positions holding the advance of the 1st Platoon on his left. Fatally wounded by enemy fire, he turned upon the machine gun positions firing upon his own platoon and with his remaining grenades dazed German machine gunners and continued to give orders to overrun the position. Private Holland, a litter bearer, and three other soldiers volunteered to cross open terrain in the face of enemy artillery, mortar and small-arms fire, to deliver blood plasma to a forward aid station. After successfully passing through enemy fire and delivering the plasma to its destination, Private Holland assisted in the treatment of casualties. When it was learned that one of the casualties was in immediate need of surgical care, Private Holland volunteered to evacuate him over the same route he had previously traveled. Again facing the known dangers of the trip, Private Holland, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, successfully completed his task. It was then learned that Private Holland was suffering from a severe case of pleurisy, with a temperature of 102 degrees. On three occasions during the day he went into towns with small forces mounted in 1/4 ton trucks and, by surprise, effected a complete surrender without bloodshed of the German garrisons. When stopped by a road block in Schonebeck, near a bridge, he continued to direct the fight, although he was wounded twice and barely able to walk. Only after the bridge had been blown and all hope for its capture had vanished did he consent to evacuation for his wounds. Colonel Hollingsworth's heroic actions and aggressive leadership were directly responsible for the accomplishments of the Task Force under his command and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the armed forces.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Raymond S. Holsti (37555613), Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 3d Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces on 21 December 1944, one-half mile south of Choneux, Belgium. As a machine gunner, Private First Class Holsti was dug in position on the far left flank of his company's defense line protecting the its link with Company C to its left. At approximately 0800 hours, the enemy mounted a determined attach with at least of company of infantry supported by two flak wagons and artillery. Private First Class Holsti, seeing the casualties being caused by the fire from the 20-mm. cannons on the vehicles, immediately placed all the fire possible from his light machine gun upon the advancing vehicles. In consequence, the flak wagons focused their firepower on the harassing gun position. Private First Class Holsti was seriously wounded several times. Despite these wounds, he continued to fire effectively at the vehicles, until bazooka men were able to get into a firing position from which they were able to knock out one vehicle and force the other to withdraw. Seeing their supporting armor eliminated, the enemy infantry broke off the attack. Private First Class Holsti continued to fire unassisted at the retreating infantry until he collapsed in his hole from great loss of blood. As a result of Private First Class Holsti's unsurpassed courage and unswerving devotion to duty, a serious threat to his company's whole defensive perimeter was eliminated. His actions were an inspiration to all who witnessed them and are typical of the highest standards of the Airborne Forces.

When a platoon of Company F was pinned down by a heavily defended Japanese strong point covering a rough stretch of ground near Barat, Luzon, Private Hornsby volunteered to act as lead scout of a unit ordered to flank the enemy position. Hornsby crawled forward to the crest of a knoll from which he located an enemy machine-gun placement flanked by supporting riflemen. He signaled the rest of the squad to take cover, and then continued forward until his movement attracted the attention of the Japanese and he became the object of heavy machine-gun and rifle fire. Ignoring the shelter of a small draw a few yards away, and although seriously wounded in the side and arm, he continued his painful, grueling advance in the face of concentrated fire until he was within grenade-throwing distance. Weakening rapidly and partially dazed by his wounds, he now summoned all his remaining strength and hurled two grenades into the midst of the enemy placement and completely silenced the position. By his dauntless courage and selfless devotion to duty in most hazardous action, Private Hornsby prevented many casualties and enabled his platoon to drive on to its objective. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Merle H. Howe (0-131962), Colonel (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 128th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 11 May 1945 at Luzon, Philippine Islands. During the fighting along the Villa Verde Trail, Colonel Howe, commanding an infantry regiment, went forward to a battalion position to observe the operations of forward elements. Shortly afterward he accompanied an advance patrol which was reconnoitering a route for tanks along the slope of a hill. Half of the patrol had traversed a narrow ravine when the enemy suddenly opened fire from concealed positions and seriously wounded a man directly in front of Colonel Howe. Taking charge of the patrol, immediately Colonel Howe sent two men forward to evacuate the casualty, and then directed covering fire into caves from which the enemy had fired. After directing removal of the wounded man to safety, he organized the patrol for sealing the caves, but was soon wounded by enemy mortar fire directed on the group. Despite the intense enemy fire he refused first aid, continued to direct the demolition squad in finding a route of approach to the caves, and assisted in providing covering fire while the caves were closed with pole charges. Under his direction five caves were sealed and over thirty enemy killed. Colonel Howe, by his quick and heroic action and his effective employment of the few troops at his disposal, prevented numerous casualties, extricated his men from a grave situation, and inflicted many losses on the enemy. His outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

There were two windows in the cellar, and realizing that the explosion would probably kill his companions he acted with split-second decision. Shouting a warning to his comrades he ran to a corner, turned his back to the men and held the grenade between his legs until it exploded, hurling him to the floor. His hand was severed and he suffered severe fragment wounds, but by his extraordinary courage he prevented injury to his companions. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Raymond Champ Hunt, Jr., Captain, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Executive Officer, Luzon Guerilla Army Forces, U.S. Army Forces in the Far East, in action against enemy forces from 21 April 1942 through 30 April 1945, in the vicinity of Tarlac, Philippine Islands. Following his escape from the enemy early in 1942, Captain Hunt organized two companies of guerrillas and became the Executive Officer for Luzon Guerilla Army Forces, United States Army Forces in the Far East in Tarlac Province. Gathering scattered arms, his men cleared the area of roving bandit gangs. Accepting the command of Pangasinan Province 20 June 1944, he carried on propaganda work among civilians and instituted intelligence activities. His troops started all-out operations against the foe four days prior to the landing of American Forces at Lingayen Gulf. Participating in the attack on an enemy garrison at San Quintin, Pangasinan, on 5 January 1945, he infiltrated their lines to gain valuable combat intelligence and establish a communication center for G-2 reports from several neighboring provinces. By his ability, initiative, courage and qualities of leadership, while engaged in activities with the Luzon Guerrilla Army Forces, Captain Hunt materially aided American operations in the Philippine Islands. Hyman (33355357), Technical Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 24 February 1945, in Germany. When the attacking echelon of his battalion was pinned down by intense hostile machine gun, rifle, and machine pistol fire from enemy troops in a fire trench, Technical Sergeant Hyman alone charged the hostile position. Single-handedly assaulting the pillbox with hand grenades, he forced the enemy to come out and surrender. By his superb personal courage and aggressive fighting spirit, Technical Sergeant Hyman killed five enemy soldiers, captured thirty, eliminated a hostile strongpoint, and enabled his battalion to continue its attack.
