The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Robert K. Nakasaki (39017321), Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy as a member of Company A, 100th Infantry Battalion, attached to the 92d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 5 April 1945 near Seravezza, Italy. Under cover of a brief artillery barrage, Sergeant Nakasaki's platoon advanced up the northern slope of Hill Georgia. As he and his men neared the summit, concentrated and intense fire from six machine guns, machine pistols and rifle fire forced the platoon to take cover. With complete disregard for personal safety, Sergeant Nakasaki grabbed his rifle, equipped with a grenade launcher, and crawled through a minefield to within fifteen yards of a well dug-in machine gun emplacement. Exposing himself to hostile fire, he launched a grenade at the nest and completely destroyed it. Quickly reloading his rifle, he fired and destroyed another machine gun on his right flank, killing two of the enemy. Before he could take cover, Sergeant Nakasaki was killed by the fire of an enemy sniper. Taking advantage of the gap thus created in the enemy defenses, the platoon quickly advanced and seized its objective. Sergeant Nakasaki's heroic action and fearlessness in the face of great danger were an inspiration to all and an everlasting tribute to the American Infantryman. His intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 92d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

NARIGON, DWAIN M.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Dwain M. Narigon, First Lieutenant (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while Commanding a platoon of Company G, 133d Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 28 May 1944, near Lanuveo, Italy. First Lieutenant Narigon, displaying outstanding tactical ability, leadership and courage, led his men against a numerically superior enemy, which was well concealed and entrenched. Effectively deploying his platoon, he advanced to within a short distance of the German positions when the enemy opened fire wounding two and killing another of his men. Seizing a rifle and at the same time calling to his men to engage one position, he moved forward, and without regard for his own personal safety, single handed destroyed another position, killing the three enemy soldiers who manned it. Reorganizing his platoon, he again relentlessly pursued the attack destroying seven more enemy positions. Upon seeing a portion of his unit pinned down by sniper and machine gun fire, First Lieutenant Narigon, in the face of intense fire charged the German snipers, killing two of them. Turning his attention to the enemy machine gun position, which was located in a building, he ran across open ground to an advantageous position alongside the house and threw a hand grenade inside. Realizing that the explosion had not killed all the men in the building and seeing two of the enemy attempting to escape by means of a tunnel, he quickly took up a post and as the two Germans emerged, shot and killed them both. He was gathering the remainder of his force together in preparation for the continuation of the attack when he was ordered to hold the position that he had just secured. By his fearless and courageous actions, his exceptional leadership and tactical knowledge, First Lieutenant Narigon not only successfully completed his mission, but was an inspiration to all who saw him, thereby. His gallant leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 34th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

When Private First Class Nash's unit was committed to a frontal assault on a strong enemy position, Private First Class Nash dashed to the front of his unit and, with complete disregard for the heavy machine gun and artillery fire, set an inspiring example to his comrades. As the attack progressed, Private First Class Nash became the point of the assault echelon. In the face of almost point blank machine gun fire which had pinned him to the ground, Private First Class Nash fearlessly rose from time to tome to study enemy dispositions and shouted back the necessary corrections for mortar fire which materially contributed to the success of the attack. The personal bravery, initiative and daring exhibited by Private First Class Nash exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 82d Airborne Division, and the United States Army.

NAVARRETE, ALBERTO

NAU, CHARLES E.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Charles E. Nau (13145277), Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces on 17 September 1944 near Heuman, Holland. As a rifle squad leader, Sergeant Nau was leading his squad in a daring frontal assault by his platoon on an important highway bridge 5 miles southwest of Nijmegen, Holland, when his platoon leader fell seriously wounded. Completely disregarding his own safety and exposing himself to withering small arms fire which at times cut his clothing, Sergeant Nau immediately assumed control of the assault element and led it boldly across the bridge. During the course of the attack his squad killed or wounded 6 of the enemy. The impetus of the assault inspired by Sergeant Nau's Heroic leadership swept the enemy from the bridge, prevented them from detonating the prepared demolitions laid to destroy the objective, and enabled follow-up troops to quickly mop up and consolidate the vital bridge objective. By his intrepid direction, heroic leadership, and aggressive attitude, Sergeant Nau set an inspiring example for his men. When hostile fire inflicted heavy casualties on the platoon to which he was attached as aid man, Technician Fifth Grade Nebesney unhesitatingly advanced to the assistance of the wounded. He was fired upon and wounded by opposing riflemen who ignored his Red Cross brassard but he disregarded the injury and treated many casualties. Although wounded twice again, he still refused to abandon his efforts, and was making his way to the side of a wounded soldier when he was killed. Inspired by his fearless example, his men pressed forward to clear two enemy-held towns. NEWMAN, AUBREY S.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Aubrey S. Newman, Colonel (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while Commanding the 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 20 and on 30 October 1944, during the assault on Leyte, Philippine Islands. On 20 October Colonel Newman went ashore in the fifth wave of the amphibious landing of Leyte. He found the preceding waves compressed within a narrow space not more than one hundred yards wide and twenty yards from the water's edge, pinned down by heavy rifle and machine gun fire and exposed to mortar and artillery fire. Confused by the loss of key officers, the men were without trained leaders competent to organize an attack. Colonel Newman at once took charge of the situation, issued necessary orders, and literally forced his men off the beach. Under his leadership and direction the troops promptly advanced and secured a beachhead approximately two hundred yards inland, and cleared the way for landing of additional troops, equipment, and supplies. Ten days later, near Jaro, Leyte, the leading elements of his assault battalion encountered heavy machine gun fire from an entrenched enemy position which commanded the main route of advance. Colonel Newman promptly made a personal reconnaissance and planned his advance, but while giving orders for the attack he was caught in heavy concentration of mortar fire and was hit. Critically wounded, he refused to be evacuated and continued to direct the attack until he lost consciousness. As a direct result of his energy, leadership and example the attack was pushed to a successful conclusion, and our troops drove the enemy from the position and continued their advance. Colonel Newman's outstanding leadership and heroic devotion to duty were an inspiration to all members of his command and a material contribution to the success of his regiment during the campaign on Leyte. His intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 24th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Walter J. Nowak, Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Sergeant], U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 339th Infantry Regiment, 85th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on the night of 11 May 1944, near Tremensuoli, Italy. When his platoon leader and platoon sergeant became casualties in an artillery and mortar barrage, Second Lieutenant Nowak, Squad Leader, assumed command of the platoon, rallied his men and continued the advance. After leading his men through a swiftly moving stream, he preceded the advance through a heavily mined area, probing with his bayonet for mines. While moving around the edge of a hill, the platoon encountered crossfire from three mutually supporting pillboxes situated on the objective. Ordering his men to engage the enemy in a fire fight, Second Lieutenant Nowak advanced up a bare slope to the first pillbox. Raising himself to the level of an embrasure he threw several grenades into the position, killing its five defenders. Continuing his advance to the second and third pillboxes, he repeated his tactics, killing thirteen Germans. Driving two other Germans into the open he engaged them in a fierce bayonet fight and succeeded in killing both. The courage, skill at arms and able leadership displayed by Second Lieutenant Nowak exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 85th Infantry Division , and the United States Army.

Despite the fact that most of the men were pinned down by extremely heavy enemy fire, Captain O'Brien, disregarding his own personal safety, moved up and down the fire-swept beach shouting orders and giving encouragement to the men. By his valiant leadership, he successfully reorganized his company. When he observed that several tanks were buttoned up and not firing, he immediately worked his way through the heavy enemy fire to them, found their crews and led them up the beach to a point from which they could engage the enemy guns. On that date, the company which Lieutenant Olsen commanded was given the mission of assaulting and capturing a strongly defended town. Shortly after launching the attack, Lieutenant Olsen's company was pinned to the ground by extremely heavy machine gun fire. Realizing the need for prompt action in maintaining the impetus of the attack, Lieutenant Olsen, with complete disregard for his personal safety, ran to the head of his company, completely exposing himself to the heavy enemy fire, to shout encouragement to his men and lead the advance. Inspired by the bravery of their leader, the men of the company rose to their feet and followed him up the hill and into the outskirts of the town, advancing against heavy enemy fire. Lieutenant Olsen then reorganized the company and, at great risk to his life, constantly exposed himself to enemy fire in leading his men in clearing the town. In this operation Lieutenant Olsen was seriously wounded, but he continued to lead the advance until his company had gained a firm foothold in the town. Lieutenant Olsen's courage, tenacity of purpose, and inspiring leadership, above and beyond the ordinary call of duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 104th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Thomas Yoshimi Ono (30105796), Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate), attached to the 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 2 June 1944, near La Torretto, Italy. Private Ono's squad acted as point for the leading platoon in a daylight attack. Contacting an enemy machine gun nest, Private Ono and two companions crawled two hundred yards through a wheat field toward the hostile weapon. Reaching a position ten yards from the machine gun, each man threw fragmentation grenades, killing three Germans. Another hostile position, containing two machine guns, opened fire on Private Ono and his companions. Under intense fire he and his comrades crawled toward the second position. Nearing the enemy strongpoint, Private Ono and his comrades opened fire with their rifles and threw hand grenades to kill two, wound one, and capture four Germans. Later in the day, when his platoon had reached its objective, an enemy machine gun opened fire on the units on the left flank. Again, Private Ono and his two companions crawled toward the enemy, making their way through a vineyard to a point within ten feet of the Germans. Pinning the nest with rifle fire while one member of the squad tossed hand grenades, they boldly charged the position with fixed bayonets. Private Ono and his fellow soldiers were successful in capturing eight Germans armed with two machine guns, three machine pistols and three rifles. In a period of approximately three hours, he and his companions neutralized five machine guns, five machine pistols, and killed or captured seventeen Germans. OPPER, LEONARD M.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Leonard M. Opper (369690196), Sergeant [then Private First Class], U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a rifleman with Company I, 3d Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces on 24 March 1945, in Germany. On that date, several men were wounded and the remainder pinned down when the position into which they had jumped came under heavy enemy small arms and machine gun fire from a nearby woods. Sergeant Opper instructed the men with him to care for and assist to cover and then, with complete disregard for his personal safety, he leaped from his shell hole firing his M-1 until he was within 20 yards of the enemy machine gun and then threw a grenade which knocked out the machine gun and killed or wounded the crew. He then captured four of the supporting riflemen and sent several others to flight. When another machine gun opened up on the men on the field, Sergeant Opper silenced it with rifle fire until the wounded men were removed from the battlefield. The intrepidity, fortitude, initiative and loyalty demonstrated by this fearless soldier in the performance of his duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 17th Airborne Division, and the United States Army.

This action so inspired his men that they smashed through the enemy defenses and seized one end of the bridge. The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Masanao Otake (0-1703069), Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 100th Infantry Battalion, 442d Regimental Combat Team, attached to the 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 17 October 1944, in the vicinity of Bruyeres, France. In the 100th's attack on Hill 578, it became necessary to send some riflemen to an isolated farmhouse, situated on flat open ground, to secure the battalion's left flank. Lieutenant Otake, who was assigned the task of leading a squad of eight men to capture the enemy occupied farmhouse, dashed out toward the building, running through a hundred yards of open field raked by machine gun and small arms fire. Inspired by his example, his men immediately followed, and after a brief fire-fight succeeded in capturing the farmhouse. Observing that Lieutenant Otake and his men wee in a vulnerable position, an enemy platoon launched a determined counter-attack against the farmhouse. Though greatly outnumbered, Lieutenant Otake urged his men to hold their hard-earned position, and while gallantly resisting the enemy assault he was mortally wounded by several machine pistol bullets and died a short while later. By complete disregard for his personal safety, gallant leadership and determination of purpose, Lieutenant Otake exemplified the finest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflected great credit upon himself, the 36th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Pedro Oxonian (6737867), Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company H, 45th Infantry Regiment, Philippine Scouts, in action against enemy forces during World War II, in the Philippine Islands. Corporal Oxonian's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
