We believe that this index of Vietnam War recipients is 90% complete, though we continue to sort through records to identify late awards, as well as to compile additional information on the recipients (Rank/Unit/etc.) and their citations. The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Rudolph S. Galiana (2297083), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Gunner in the machine-gun section, Second Platoon, Company I, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), during operations in the Republic of Vietnam. On 21 April 1967, two companies of the Third Battalion, First Marines were helilifted into the Que Son Valley in the vicinity of Nui Loc Son to reinforce an infantry company that was heavily engaged by a numerically superior enemy force estimated to be of battalion size. The enemy was well-entrenched and delivered highly effective small-arms and mortar fire against the relieving companies. In the ensuing battle, Private First Class Galiana's machine-gun team was positioned to gain fire superiority over the enemy positions that held his platoon's advance to a standstill. Immediately after engaging the enemy his machine-gun team was caught in a cross fire and heavily engaged for the next several minutes. During this time the ammunition supply for the gun became critically low. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, Private First Class Galiana stood up in the middle of the cross fire that had already killed or wounded several members of his team and ran from man to man collecting ammunition from the dead and wounded. After he had collected all the ammunition, he ran back to the gun position and passed it to the gunner. As he did so, he was fatally wounded by enemy machine-gun fire. His outstanding courage, daring initiative and valiant fighting spirit were an inspiration to all who observed him, and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Phillip R. Gates (2326768), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gunner with Company E, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours of 10 August 1969, while occupying a night defensive position near the Demilitarized Zone in Quang Tri Province, Corporal Gates' platoon came under a vicious ground attack by a North Vietnamese Army company reinforced by sappers utilizing automatic weapons fire, rocket-propelled grenades, and satchel charges. During the initial moments of the assault, the momentum of the enemy movement enabled several of the hostile soldiers to penetrate a portion of the Marines' defensive perimeter and approach the command post. Corporal Gates, armed only with a .45 caliber pistol, vigorously defended his position and killed the advancing sappers with accurate fire. As he exhausted his ammunition, he alertly observed another sapper crawling toward the rear of the command post armed with a satchel charge and, gaining his feet, engaged the hostile soldier in fierce hand-to-hand combat and succeeded in disarming him before he escaped. After dispensing with this threat, Corporal Gates reloaded his weapon and was providing security for the platoon commander and radio operator when he was seriously wounded by fragments from a rocket-propelled grenade which detonated nearby. Steadfastly refusing medical attention, he remained in his dangerously exposed position, despite enemy rounds impacting all around him, and provided covering fire until the North Vietnamese Army unit was defeated. Although suffering pain, he then assisted in administering first aid to his more critically wounded companions and refused to be medically evacuated until all other casualties had been cared for. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Corporal Gates inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Joseph T. Getherall, Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Squad Leader with Company M, Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 22 December 1966. during the early morning hours, Company M was occupying a night defensive position in the area of the Co Bi-Than Tan Corridor, Thua Thien Province. When the Viet Cong 802d Battalion suddenly attacked, Sergeant Getherall unhesitatingly exposed himself to intense small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire as he repeatedly moved across open terrain to control his unit. Although seriously wounded by an exploding mortar round, he steadfastly refused medical evacuation. As the battle raged throughout the night, with most of the enemy ground assaults concentrated in front of his Squad's position, which spread across 50 meters of open terrain, Sergeant Getherall continually exposed himself to enemy fire, disregarding his own safety in order to pinpoint enemy targets, direct fire, re-supply his men with ammunition, and ensure the integrity of the perimeter defense. He personally killed several enemy attackers with his rifle fire, including an enemy soldier who had just thrown a grenade. While warning his men, Sergeant Getherall was able to get to the grenade, pick it up, and throw it back towards the enemy before it exploded. When a Marine went down in the open, Sergeant Getherall realized the gravity of the situation and fearlessly moved across the hazardous open terrain under intense enemy fire and dragged the Marine to safety. Inspired by his selfless courage and aggressive fighting spirit,, his squad repulsed a number of savage attacks while inflicting heavy casualties on a determined and numerically superior enemy force. By his outstanding leadership, resolute determination, and loyal devotion to duty, Sergeant Getherall reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

On 19 March 1969, during Operation Purple Martin near fire support base Neville in Quang Tri Province, Second Lieutenant Giretti's patrol was preparing to provide security for the eastern flank of the company when his Marines came under a heavy volume of small arms fire and hand grenade attack. Observing that a hostile machine gun emplacement was preventing the advance of his men, Second Lieutenant Giretti completely disregarded his own safety as he rushed across the fire-swept terrain and, armed only with a grenade and a pistol, aggressively assaulted and destroyed the enemy position. As he fearlessly moved toward a second objective, he was seriously wounded and knocked to the ground by small arms fire. Steadfastly determined to continue his attack, he was resolutely attempting to rise when he was mortally wounded by the detonation of a hostile explosive device. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in his company's subsequent defeat of the enemy. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Second Lieutenant Giretti contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. While participating in a search and destroy mission near Cam Lo, in Quang Tri Province, First Lieutenant Goodwin was assigned the mission of searching a recently discovered North Vietnamese Army base camp. As the Marines moved through the area, they were subjected to a sudden heavy volume of enemy automatic and small arms fire from their direct front. The initial burst of fire inflicted numerous Marine casualties. Instantly reacting to the serious situation, he began organizing his men for an assault on the enemy positions. Fearlessly moving throughout the area despite the intense hostile fire, he shouted words of encouragement to his men and directed their accurate suppressive fire on the enemy. When the platoon was in position, First Lieutenant Goodwin ordered the assault and eprsonally led the attack across twenty-five meters of open terrain swept by vicious machine-gun fire. His inspiring example enabled his platoon to successfully overrun the enemy positions with a minimum of casualties. During this engagement, while courageously leading his men, he fell mortally wounded. By his uncommon courage, inspiring leadership and selfless devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Goodwin contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission and thereby upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Lance Corporal Goss was a member of a reaction force assigned to assist a friendly patrol that had established contact with a numerically superior enemy force on National Route One south of DaNang. As the force arrived at the besieged unit's position, they were taken under devastating enemy small-arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire. Observing a wounded machine gunner lying in an area dangerously exposed to enemy fire, Lance Corporal Goss fearlessly ran across the fire swept terrain to the side of the casualty. After picking up the wounded and the machine gun, he began maneuvering toward a Combined Action Platoon's defensive perimeter 400 meters away. As he was brought under intense enemy fire, he placed the injured man in a covered position and began delivering a heavy volume of accurate suppressive fire on the enemy position. Undaunted by the enemy rounds impacting around him, he continued to expose himself to provide covering fire while all the casualties were evacuated. By his bold initiative, gallant fighting spirit and loyal devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Goss reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Grace, Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Assistant Patrol Leader with Company A, First Reconnaissance Battalion, First Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 14 June 1970, while patrolling in a heavily-jungled area south of DaNang, Corporal Grace's eight-man reconnaissance team came under intense small arms and automatic weapons fire from a North Vietnamese Army battalion occupying several well-concealed emplacements. While his team quickly formed a tight defensive perimeter, Corporal Grace, realizing the need for frontal security, boldly maneuvered across the fire-swept terrain to a location approximately fifty meters forward of his companions. Although virtually cut off from his team and subjected to a heavy volume of fire from waves of assaulting hostile soldiers, he valiantly maintained his dangerously exposed position in an effort to slow the enemy advance with his accurate suppressive fire. Directed to return to the defensive perimeter when fixed-wing aircraft arrived on station, he fearlessly moved through the jungle growth, spraying his footsteps with fire, thereby effectively preventing any member of the North Vietnamese Army unit from following him and breaching the friendly position. As the engagement continued, the enemy fire and determined attacks increased in intensity, despite repeated strafing by supporting aircraft, but Corporal Grace's vigorous defense of his sector of the perimeter was a telling factor in preventing the hostile soldiers from overrunning the small Marine unit, although at times the soldiers approached to within a few feet of the beleaguered reconnaissance team. When the grandier was severely wounded, Corporal Grace, with no thought for his own safety, rushed to the side of the casualty to aid him and, while providing covering fire, was himself wounded but, seemingly oblivious to the rounds impacting around him, he resolutely remained to comfort his companion until he was joined by a corpsman. Aware that considerable ammunition had been expended, he then boldly moved from one Marine position to another to resupply his companions and to encourage them to exert maximum combat effort. With the arrival of a transport helicopter, which immediately became a vulnerable target for the hostile soldiers, Corporal Grace assisted in embarking one of the two casualties sustained by the team then, standing in full view of the enemy, provided withering covering fire until all the team was safely aboard. By his indomitable courage, bold initiative, and unfaltering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Corporal Grace was undoubtedly instrumental in preventing excessive Marine casualties and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

On 26 August 1969, while Company E was conducting a search and destroy operation in Hiep Duc Valley in Quang Nam Province, the Marines came under intense sniper fire from hostile soldiers occupying well-concealed emplacements and sustained several casualties. Observing that the wounded men were pinned down in an exposed area, Private First Class Gray, with complete disregard for his own safety, fought his way across the fire-swept terrain and fearlessly carried one of his injured companions to a covered location where he could receive medical attention and await evacuation in relative safety. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Terry Roland Green (2152200), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Assistant Machine Gunner with the Third Platoon, Company E, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, on 20 December 1967, in connection with operations against insurgent Communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. During a company search and clear operation near Bao An Tay, Lance Corporal Green's platoon was moving to a position from which it could cover the company's advance across an open rice paddy when it was taken under heavy enemy automatic weapons fire. In the initial burst of fire, Lance Corporal Green's machine gunner was wounded. Unhesitatingly assuming duties as gunner, he immediately set up the machine gun and delivered an accurate volume of first on the enemy positions. He effectively suppressed the Viet Cong fire, enabling his platoon and the remainder of the company to safely cross the open area. Continuing its mission, Company E made contact with well-entrenched elements of a Viet Cong battalion. When it came under vicious enemy fire, the point squad of Lance Corporal Green's platoon was halted in the open and suffered three serious casualties. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Green courageously crawled forward to the exposed squad's position with extra ammunition. Despite intense enemy fire, he courageously moved his machine gun to a position forward of the pinned down squad and directed extremely effective fire on the enemy positions. Repeatedly exposing himself to heavy Viet Cong fire, he was instrumental in providing covering fire for the evacuation of the wounded. He steadfastly remained in this perilous position until all the casualties had been evacuated and the squad had reached a more secure area. He was among the last to leave the hazardous forward area. His heroism and selfless actions under hostile fire undoubtedly prevented additional casualties to his unit and inspired all who observed him. By his bold initiative, exceptional courage, outstanding professional skill and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Lance Corporal Green upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

During the early morning hours of 28 May 1968, while occupying a defensive position southeast of Khe Sanh, Company F came under heavy attack by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. During the ensuing fire fight, several Marines were seriously wounded, including Corporal Grist's squad leader. Reacting instantly, Corporal Grist took charge of the unit and directed the deliver of a heavy volume of fire against the enemy. Disregarding his own safety, he skillfully adjusted mortar fire on the hostile force until his radio was damaged by the intense fire. When the enemy soldiers penetrated the company's defensive perimeter near his squad's position, he boldly directed his men to secondary positions. Realizing that his squad leader could not be moved, he fearlessly remained in the hazardous area in order to protect his wounded comrade. Ignoring the enemy rounds impacting around him, he boldly exposed himself to the enemy fire and directed accurate fire upon the attacking North Vietnamese soldiers until he was mortally wounded. His heroic actions and sincere concern for the welfare of his fellow Marines were an inspiration to all who served with him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission.
