The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Roger V. Inscore (2234781), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Machine-Gun Squad Leader with the First Platoon, Company M, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during Operation UNION II, near La Nga, Quang Tin Province, Republic of Vietnam on 26 May 1967. Corporal Inscore's platoon was assigned the mission of seizing a tree line in order to alleviate the pressure on Company L's position and assist in evacuating casualties. When the assault encountered enemy mortar, small arms and automatic weapons fire, Corporal Inscore immediately deployed his guns forward into action, directing vicious suppressive fire on the enemy positions. With complete disregard for the intense enemy fire, he moved from gun to gun, pointing out targets, correcting the fire and shouting encouragement. Corporal Inscore's aggressive enthusiasm was spontaneously captured by the entire platoon. The pinned-down units unhesitatingly commenced moving by fire team rushes to overrun the objective. Observing that a Marine had fallen mortally wounded in an exposed area, Corporal Inscore, first ensuring that his guns were on target, moved forward through the concentrated mortar and sniper fire to the wounded Marine's side and skillfully applied first aid in a futile attempt to save the wounded man's life. As he rejoined his squad and ordered them up to the now captured objective, he was struck and mortally wounded by an enemy sniper round. Corporal Inscore's inspiring bravery and professional skill became the major factors in the rapid accomplishment of the platoon's mission and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

JACKSON, MARLIN W.

Jackson (2153526), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Radio Operator with the Second Battalion, Thirteenth Marines. FIRST Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 18 May 1968 Corporal Jackson was assigned to an artillery forward observer team supporting Company M, Third Battalion, Twenty-Seventh Marines during Operation Allen Brook. Upon being helicopter lifted into an area south of DaNang, the Marines came under intense hostile fire as they debarked from the aircraft and sustained numerous casualties. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Corporal Jackson unhesitatingly organized several Marines to evacuate the injured men. Undaunted by the enemy fire he repeatedly led the Marines about the fire- swept area and supervised the expeditious evacuation of the casualties. Although two of his men were seriously wounded, he continued his resolute efforts ensuring that all of the wounded were moved to covered positions. On 24 May, Company M established contact with a large North Vietnamese Army force. Fearlessly maneuvering across the fire-swept terrain, Corporal Jackson delivered water and ammunition to the forward positions and evacuated casualties to positions of relative safety. Disregarding his own safety, he removed his protective vest and discarded his weapon in order to carry the maximum amount of supplies. On 26 May, Company M was again heavily engaged with the enemy. Alertly observing a hostile soldier occupying a bunker, Corporal Jackson immediately delivered a heavy volume of fire and pinned down the North Vietnamese soldier. Assisted by another Marine, he maneuvered forward to the position and captured the enemy, seizing an antitank rocket launcher, an automatic rifle and a large amount of ammunition. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Corporal Jackson contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Jadlow (0-87562), First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Company Executive Officer of Company B, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against insurgent forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 12 May 1966 while moving to assist a beleaguered patrol, the Company became heavily engaged with a well-equipped and deeply entrenched Viet Cong Battalion near the village of Hoa Tay. Repeatedly exposing himself to the intense enemy machine gun, mortar, and recoilless rifle fire, First Lieutenant Jadlow succeeded in establishing an effective base of fire that enabled the Company to overrun two Viet Cong trench lines. Upon being notified by his Company Commander that reinforcements were being flown in to assist the Company, he personally supervised the collection of equipment and the dead and wounded for evacuation. As the helicopters landed, enemy fire intensified and one was shot down by recoilless rifle fire. Without hesitation, First Lieutenant Jadlow directed the removal of all personnel to a secure area. When the enemy was attempting to outflank the Company's position, he again braved hostile fire to employ the 50 caliber machine guns from the downed helicopter in repulsing the enemy attack. Throughout the entire nine-hour encounter, First Lieutenant Jadlow's inspiring leadership, bold courage, and professionalism were determining factors in the repelling and defeat of the numerically superior enemy force; thereby upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

Jensen (0-76524), Major, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Pilot with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron THREE HUNDRED SIXTY-FOUR (HMM-364), Marine Aircraft Group SIXTEEN (MAG-16), FIRST Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the afternoon of 8 November 1970, Major Jensen launched as Section Leader of a flight of two CH-46 transport helicopters assigned the emergency medical evacuation of a critically wounded Marine from a unit operating in a densely-jungled sector of Charlie Ridge in Quang Nam Province. When a ceiling varying from one hundred to three hundred feet in adverse weather severely restricted visibility, he directed his wingman and one of the escorting Huey gunships to establish an orbit at Hill 65 while he proceeded to the extraction site with the other gunship. Arriving in the vicinity of the ground unit, he utilized instructions from the Marines who listened to the sound of his engines to guide him up the steep hillside through the heavy rains and overcast to a hover above the pick-up site. Despite gusty winds and the difficulty of maintaining a hover with his rotor blades within three feet of the rocky hillside, he expertly manipulated his controls to maintain a relatively steady hover during the twenty minutes required to hoist the casualty aboard. While en route to DaNang, Major Jensen received an urgent request for the medical evacuation of another seriously wounded Marine from a unit which was heavily engaged in combat with a hostile force at Charlie Ridge approximately one thousand meters southwest of the previous extraction site. After transporting his patient to the hospital, he resolutely returned to the designated landing zone on Charlie Ridge which was on a small ridge and was surrounded by steep mountains on three sides. Forced to abort his first approach when his aircraft came under intense enemy fire, Major Jensen directed the Marines to move the casualty to a bomb crater one hundred and fifty yards away and then coordinated his second approach with the covering fire of the two supporting gunships. Undaunted by the extremely heavy volume of hostile fire, several rounds of which penetrated his helicopter, he skillfully maneuvered to a hover and boldly remained in his precarious position for the five minutes required to hoist the wounded Marine aboard He then lifted out of the dangerous area and proceeded to the hospital at DaNang. By his courage, superior airmanship, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Major Jensen was instrumental in accomplishing the hazardous missions and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

On 24 May 1968 during Operation Allen Brook in Quang Nam Province, Company K was ambushed near the village of Le Bac (1) by a large North Vietnamese Army force and two platoons were pinned down and separated from the remainder of the company. Although fully realizing the danger involved and that previous attempts to reach several seriously wounded Marines had resulted in additional casualties, Private First Class Jester disregarded his own safety as he made three trips into the fire-swept area to move his injured comrades to safety. During one of these trips, he observed an enemy machine gun position. Crawling to within ten feet of the bunker, he killed two enemy soldiers with hand grenades. Observing another North Vietnamese soldier firing from a nearby spider hole, he aggressively attacked the position and killed the enemy with accurate rifle fire. Although hampered by the tropical heat, he continued his selfless efforts, resupplying his companions with water and ammunition on each return trip from the rear area. When the forward units were ordered to withdraw to facilitate the employment of supporting arms, Private First Class Jester voluntarily remained with the last group to leave in order to provide covering fire for the movement of his comrades. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Victor Jinkerson (2286460), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a squad Leader with Company K, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the afternoon of 7 February 1968, when one of the platoons from Company K became pinned down by the fire from an estimated North Vietnamese Army battalion south of Gio Linh, Corporal Jinkerson moved with his platoon to assist the beleaguered unit. As his unit approached the embattled area, it came under intense enemy fire and sustained heavy casualties, including the platoon commander who was mortally wounded. Quickly assuming command, Corporal Jinkerson skillfully established a defensive perimeter for the landing zone and company command post and directed evacuation efforts to retrieve the dead and wounded. Although he was wounded in the head and arm, he completely disregarded his own safety as he continuously moved from one position to another throughout the afternoon, encouraging his men and directing and controlling suppressive counter fire, which prevented the enemy form infiltrating the perimeter. When medical evacuation helicopters arrived the following morning, Corporal Jinkerson assisted in evacuating casualties, refusing evacuation for himself until all members of his unit were accounted for. His leadership and selfless concern for his fellow Marines inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of several Marines. By his extraordinary courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Corporal Jinkerson upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to John Cullen Johann (1132242), Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Acting Company Gunnery Sergeant of Company E, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 12 May 1968, during Operation ALLEN BROOK, Sergeant Johann was moving with his company in a search and destroy mission through a village east of An Hoa in Quang Nam Province when the left flank of his unit suddenly came under heavy small arms, automatic weapons and rocket fire from a North Vietnamese Army force, wounding several Marines. Rapidly assessing the situation, Sergeant Johann assisted in organizing the evacuation of the casualties and moved into the fire-swept area to carry an injured man 150 meters across an open rice paddy to an evacuation area. Knocked to the ground when enemy rockets struck a nearby tank as he returned to the battle area, he quickly regained his footing and attempted to rescue the injured driver. Knocked to the ground a second time when the tank was again struck by hostile fire, killing the driver, he was forced away from the vehicle by the heavy volume of enemy fire. After ensuring that another tank was brought forward to provide fire support, he moved into the fire-swept area and recovered a wounded Marine, carrying him to safety. Realizing that the enemy would attempt to deliver fire into the evacuation area, he directed the evacuation of all the casualties from the area and personally carried four of the wounded 300 meters to a landing zone. Undaunted b the hostile fire around him, he returned to the battle area, discovered a Marine who was seriously wounded, immediately provided first aid treatment and rushed the casualty to the landing zone where he was quickly evacuated, ultimately saving the man's life. After collapsing from physical exhaustion and the extreme heat, he was given medical treatment. When he recovered, he refused further medical assistance in order to help consolidate his unit's defensive positions. By his inspiring courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Sergeant Johann undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

On 6 September 1967 during Operation Swift, Company K was assigned the mission of reinforcing another Marine unit which was in heavy contact with a well entrenched force of North Vietnamese Army Regulars. Upon arrival at the designated area, Sergeant JOHNSON immediately deployed his men and skillfully established a defensive perimeter. Unhesitatingly exposing himself to intense small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire, he repeatedly moved across open terrain to effectively control his unit. While moving from one position to another he was seriously wounded by an exploding mortar round. On 11 June 1968, while participating in Operation Mameluke Thrust in Quang Nam Province, Staff Sergeant JUSTIS' platoon suddenly came under intense small arms and automatic weapons fire from a large, well entrenched North Vietnamese Army force. Reacting instantly, he skillfully maneuvered his men to more advantageous positions and commenced adjusting accurate artillery fire upon the enemy emplacements. Fearlessly exposing himself to the hostile fire, he boldly moved across the fire-swept terrain from one position to another, shouting words of encouragement to his men and directing their fire. After ensuring that casualties were evacuated, he deployed his platoon on line and commenced an attack on the North Vietnamese positions which was halted by a heavy volume of hostile fire. Keckler (0-93224), Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Pilot with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron THREE HUNDRED SIXTY-FOUR (HMM-364), Marine Aircraft Group SIXTEEN (MAG-16), FIRST Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 11 January 1969, Captain Keckler launched as Section Leader of a flight of two CH-46 transport helicopters assigned the emergency evacuation of two seriously wounded Marines from a patrol operating in Quang Nam Province. Forced to abort his first landing attempt because of intense hostile fire, he alertly detected many enemy firing positions as he climbed out of the area and transmitted their location for subsequent supporting arms fire and air strikes. When informed of the wounded Marines' critical condition, he refused to wait for supporting gunships, following the friendly bombardment of the hostile positions, and resolutely commenced his approach to the landing zone. Advised to wave off when he encountered an extremely heavy volume of enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire, he boldly elected to continue his mission and fearlessly maneuvered his CH-46 to a landing near the casualties. Undaunted by the hostile rounds impacting around him, several of which struck his aircraft, Captain Keckler steadfastly maintained his dangerously exposed position on the ground until both evacuees were embarked before lifting out of the fire-swept area. As he began to clear the area, he was informed that another Marine was seriously wounded and would require immediate evacuation. Skillfully coordinating his third approach with the air strikes of fixed wing aircraft, and although advised to abort his landing, he again braved intense enemy fire and maneuvered to a landing. Calmly waiting until the casualty was embarked, he then departed for the nearest medical facility. Subsequent inspection of his aircraft revealed such extensive battle damage that it was grounded. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Captain Keckler was instrumental in saving the lives of three Marines and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Keefe (1332594), Gunnery Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Noncommissioned Officer in Charge of Food Service, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 19 March 1969, the Battalion Command Post at Phu Lac came under an intense ground attack from approximately two hundred enemy sappers who were supported by rockets and mortars. Reacting instantly, Gunnery Sergeant Keefe was rushing to his defensive position adjacent to the mess hall when he observed six hostile soldiers who had penetrated the defensive wire and were moving toward the command bunker. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, he fearlessly moved between the enemy and the command bunker and began delivering rifle fire upon the soldiers who were firing at him. After killing one hostile soldier and forcing the others to take cover, Gunnery Sergeant Keefe continued firing his rifle as he attempted to reach a fighting trench, but was knocked to the ground by the explosion of an enemy grenade. While steadfastly endeavoring to recover from the blast and continue his aggressive efforts, he was mortally wounded by hostile automatic weapons fire. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in preventing the destruction of the Battalion Command Bunker. The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to George P. Kendall, Jr. (1103292), Gunnery Sergeant [then Sergeant], U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as Chief Interrogator with the Eleventh Interrogation Translation Team, III Marine Amphibious Force, in the Republic of Vietnam from 31 January to 4 February 1968 during Operation HUE CITY. Serving with Advisory Team Three on 31 January, Gunnery Sergeant Kendall directed the evacuation of casualties throughout the night while the North Vietnamese Army force launched a concentrated mortar and rocket attack upon the city. The following morning, despite intense enemy sniper fire and mortar barrages, he led a group of Marines to the embarkation point and assisted in placing the wounded aboard helicopters. Volunteering, he accompanied reaction forces on patrols in order to obtain vital intelligence information. During the three-day period, he conducted exhaustive interrogations at the Thua Thien refugee center, screening approximately 1,300 refugees and obtaining valuable intelligence information. On 4 February, Sergeant Kendall volunteered to serve as Noncommissioned Officer in Charge of a reconnaissance/intelligence patrol in the vicinity of Hue Stadium. After securing vital intelligence information, the patrol leader and another Marine deployed to search the west side of the stadium and immediately became pinned down by intense enemy semiautomatic weapons fire. Sergeant Kendall, in an attempt to aid his besieged comrades, maneuvered around the east wall of the stadium and was wounded by enemy automatic weapons fire. With complete disregard for his own safety and his painful wound, he continued his advance but was wounded again by enemy fire. Undaunted, he continued his one-man assault on the enemy machine gun, silencing it before he succumbed to his wounds. By his bold initiative, intrepid fighting spirit and loyal devotion to duty, Sergeant Kendall reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

On 14 April 1968, while assaulting North Vietnamese positions on Hill 881 North, Second Lieutenant King's platoon encountered a heavy enemy grenade attack and intense machine gun fire. Realizing the important of maintaining the momentum of the attack, he aggressively led his men forward, advancing to a position near the crest of the hill where he was wounded in the leg by fragments from an exploding grenade. Ignoring his painful injury, he continued to encourage his men and boldly entered an enemy bunker and personally killed four North Vietnamese soldiers. His daring actions enabled his platoon to seize its objective, routing an estimated two enemy companies from the area. Koehler (2537986), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company I, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 4 June 1969, during Operation VIRGINIA RIDGE, while Company I was conducting a search and destroy operation west of Cam Lo in Quang Tri Province, the Marines came under a heavy volume of small arms fire from a hostile force occupying well-concealed emplacements. During the initial moments of the engagement, the Marines sustained several casualties. Observing that his wounded companions were lying in positions dangerously exposed to the enemy fire, Private First Class Koehler unhesitatingly raced across the fire-swept terrain and pulled one of the men to a covered position just as a hand grenade detonated where his comrade had been. Again braving hostile fire, he re-entered the hazardous area to retrieve another injured man and while he was placing him in a relatively secure location, Private First Class Koehler was mortally wounded by small arms fire. His heroic and bold actions inspired all who observed him and saved the lives of two Marines. By his courage, selfless concern for his fellowmen and unswerving devotion to duty, Private First Class Koehler upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

KOLAKOWSKI, HENRY, JR.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Henry Kolakowski, Jr. (0-81631), Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Commanding Officer of Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 30 January 1968, Captain Kolakowski's company landed by helicopter in the Hoa Vang District of Quang Nam Province and quickly established a blocking position to contain two Viet Cong battalions on a river island while a nearby Army of the Republic of Vietnam force prepared to assault the enemy position. When the attacking units encountered heavy resistance and faltered, Captain Kolakowski immediately effected the necessary coordination and led his company to relieve the attacking forces. The Viet Cong, well entrenched in a hamlet surrounded by wire entanglements and making effective use of excellent fields of fire afforded by open rice paddies, were successful in holding back the attacking forces by use of extremely heavy small arms fire, grenades and antitank rockets. With exceptional professional skill and courage, Captain Kolakowski reorganized his company while under the intense enemy fire, issued orders for supporting fire and prepared to re-assault the hamlet. Demonstrating superior tactical skill and inspiring leadership, he fearlessly exposed himself to the hostile fire as he led his troops in a second assault. When the lead elements of his unit succeeded in reaching the hamlet, he unhesitatingly advanced through heavy enemy cross fire and directed his men in aggressive attacks against the determined enemy. Consolidating his position with two platoons before darkness descended, Captain Kolakowski established a cordon by placing his remaining platoon in a blocking position adjacent to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam forces. Throughout the night, as the enemy repeatedly attempted to break through the perimeter in human wave attacks, he disregarded his own safety as he directed his men in maintaining their positions. The following morning, Captain Kolakowski resumed the attack on the entrapped enemy, contributing significantly to 102 of the enemy confirmed killed, the capture of eighty-eight soldiers and the destruction or confiscation of large quantities of ammunition, equipment and valuable documents. By his exceptional professionalism, dauntless courage and unswerving devotion to duty, Captain Kolakowski upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Konrady (2124523), Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company L, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam on 18 July 1966. While on a search and clear operation in Quang Tri Province, Corporal Konrady's fire team was engaged in a firefight with the enemy when he noticed one of his wounded companions lying in the open, in the direct line of heavy automatic weapons fire. Four other Marines attempted to aid the exposed Marine but each time were driven back by heavy fire. Realizing that his comrade needed immediate medical assistance, Corporal Konrady unhesitatingly braved the intense hostile fire to run to the wounded man and carry him thirty meters to a safe position. His disregard for his own safety and heroic actions throughout were an inspiration to all who observed him. By his bravery in the face of the enemy, bold initiative and unfalter­ing dedication to duty, Corporal Konrady upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

On 24 November 1968, during Operation MEADE RIVER, Company K was occupying a night defensive position when Lance Corporal Kuehlmann, alertly observed a hostile soldier throwing a hand grenade into the perimeter. When the grenade impacted just a few inches from the head of a sleeping Marine, Lance Corporal Kuehlmann, fully aware that it might explode at any instant, unhesitatingly left his relative safe position and rushed to pick up the lethal object. Fearlessly hurling the grenade at the retreating enemy, Lance Corporal Kuehlmann was wounded when it detonated immediately after leaving his hand. His heroic actions and sincere concern for the welfare of a companion inspired all who observed him and prevented a serious injury or possible death of a fellow Marine. KUPCHO, THOMAS GODFREY

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Thomas Godfrey Kupcho (2408039), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gunner with Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the morning of 29 May 1968, while participating in Operation ALLEN BROOK, Company B became heavily engaged with a large North Vietnamese Army force in the vicinity of DaNang. As the lead elements assaulted through a tree line, Private First Class Kupcho effectively provided covering fire for the advancing Marines. After his unit was consolidated, he unhesitatingly assumed the point position and, upon entering the tree line, delivered a heavy volume of automatic weapons fire against enemy emplacements which had pinned down the members of an adjacent platoon. Fearlessly exposing himself to the hostile fire, he silenced four emplacements with his M-60 machine gun and assisted in accounting for five North Vietnamese soldiers killed. Upon learning that the lead elements of his company had been halted by intense North Vietnamese automatic weapons and sniper fire, he boldly moved forward and aggressively assaulted a hostile fortification, killing two enemy soldiers. As the hostile force began to break contact, he continued to deliver accurate covering fire, enabling his comrades to evacuate mortally wounded and injured Marines. His heroic actions and bold initiative inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in his accounting for seven North Vietnamese soldiers confirmed killed. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty, Private First Class Kupcho contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
