We believe that this index of Vietnam War recipients is 90% complete, though we continue to sort through records to identify late awards, as well as to compile additional information on the recipients (Rank/Unit/etc.) and their citations. Citation:
The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to David S. Hackett (0-92088), First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company H, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Reinforced), in the Republic of Vietnam, on 30 April 1967. While conducting a search and destroy mission in Thua Thien Province, North of Khe Sanh, the company came under a sudden and vicious attack from fortified enemy emplacements less than one hundred meters away. Armed with .50 caliber machine guns, automatic rifles and small arms with sniper scopes, the enemy inflicted heavy casualties. First Lieutenant Hackett unhesitatingly charged thirty meters through a hail of automatic fire to direct an M-60 machine gun team against an enemy bunker. Once this mission was completed, he again exposed himself to the intense fire to organize a stricken platoon and help evacuate the seriously wounded. Upon completion of this task, he once again rushed to the base of fire to encourage and direct his men's fire. While pressing the assault and encouraging his Marines, First Lieutenant Hackett was mortally wounded. By his outstanding courage, indomitable fighting spirit and selfless efforts in behalf of others, First Lieutenant Hackett served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to William A. Hadsock (2334155), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company E, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 18 August 1968, while on a search and destroy operation in Quang Nam Province, Company E came under a heavy volume of small arms and automatic weapons fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force and sustained numerous casualties. As his unit withdrew to a more tenable position, Private First Class Hadsock alertly observed several wounded Marines lying in an area exposed to intense hostile fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, he fearlessly crossed 200 meters of fire-swept rice paddy to a wounded comrade where he immediately administered first aid treatment. Ignoring the heavy volume of North Vietnamese machine gun fire, he carried his comrade to a position of relative safety. Continuing his determined efforts, he repeatedly traversed the dangerously open area and, while recovering a fatally wounded Marine, Private First Class Hadsock was mortally wounded. His bold initiative and sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades inspired all who observed him and saved the lives of two fellow Marines. By his courage, resolute determination and steadfast devotion to duty, Private First Class Hadsock upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Robert Bryant Hamblett (2486513), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gun Team Leader with Company D, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 12 November 1969, Lance Corporal Hamblett was a member of a reaction force which was directed to assist a platoon that had been pinned down by fire from elements of a North Vietnamese Army battalion occupying a well-fortified bunker complex in the Que Son Mountain area of Quang Nam Province. Arriving at the site of the beleaguered unit, the reaction force was also pinned down by an extremely heavy volume of mortar, small-arms, and automatic-weapons fire. Realizing the need for immediate action, Lance Corporal Hamblett seized the initiative and commenced maneuvering his men in an attempt to execute a flanking movement. As he was directing his men across the fire-swept terrain, he pinpointed the enemy machine gun emplacement which was the principal source of hostile fire. Aware that one person would attract less attention than a group, he deployed his team back to friendly lines and commenced a lone assault up a steep slope toward the hostile bunker. Undaunted by the enemy rounds impacting all around him, he determinedly pressed forward but was mortally wounded by sniper fire as he darted across an open area. By his courage, valiant initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Hamblett inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Haskell (0-106577), Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company K, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the morning of 9 March 1969, a squad from Second Lieutenant Haskell's platoon had established an ambush east of Mai Loc in Quang Tri Province when the Marines became heavily engaged with a North Vietnamese Army company. Realizing the need for immediate action, Second Lieutenant Haskell quickly lead the remainder of his platoon through enemy controlled territory tot the beleaguered unit. Arriving at the ambush position, he skillfully maneuvered his platoon across the fire-swept terrain, boldly shouting words of encouragement to the men and directing their accurate suppressive fire upon the hostile unit. Undaunted by the enemy rounds impacting nearby, he fearlessly adjusted supporting arms fire upon the North Vietnamese emplacements and coordinated the movement of tanks and infantry units until the enemy was forced to flee in panic and confusion. Determined to exploit the hostile contact to the maximum extent, he adjusted artillery fire upon the retreating hostile soldiers, which completely disorganized and decimated the North Vietnamese company. By his courage, aggressive leadership and unwavering devotion to duty at great personal risk, Second Lieutenant Haskell was instrumental in the Marines' accounting for over twenty enemy soldiers killed and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Carlos N. Hathcock, II (MCSN: 1873109), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Sniper, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in connection with military operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 16 September 1969. Staff Sergeant Hathcock was riding on an Assault Amphibious Vehicle which ran over and detonated an enemy anti-tank mine, disabling the vehicle which was immediately engulfed in flames. He and other Marines who were riding on top of the vehicle were sprayed with flaming gasoline caused by the explosion. Although suffering from severe burns to his face, trunk, and arms and legs, Staff Sergeant Hathcock assisted the injured Marines in exiting the burning vehicle and moving to a place of relative safety. With complete disregard for his own safety and while suffering excruciating pain from his burns, he bravely ran back through the flames and exploding ammunition to ensure that no Marines had been left behind in the burning vehicle. His heroic actions were instrumental in saving the lives of several Marines. By his courage, aggressive leadership, and total devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, Staff Sergeant Hathcock reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

On 13 April 1968, during an operation along the canal east of HUE, elements of the First Battalion came under heavy enemy automatic weapons, small arms and rocket fire and temporarily pinned down... From his company's position overlooking the canal, Sergeant Hayes observed several wounded Marines lying in the open terrain and unhesitatingly volunteered to lead a rescue team across the fire-swept area to assist the casualties. Carefully selecting an approach route, he crossed the canal and, providing covering fire for his companions, continued to advance until he reached the wounded Marines. Repeatedly exposing himself to heavy enemy fire, Sergeant Hayes rendered first aid, directed the activities of his companions and assisted in moving the casualties to covered positions. While aiding a wounded Marine, he himself was seriously wounded by enemy fire. Despite his serious injury, Sergeant Hayes continued to render medical aid until he succumbed to his wound. His heroic actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of several Marines. By his extraordinary courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Sergeant Hayes upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to William Allen Hayes (2359755), Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in the Republic of Vietnam, on 6 June 1968. While serving with the Second Platoon and on security patrol near Con Thien, Private First Class Hayes and the platoon were ambushed by approximately two companies of enemy forces. Surrounded and pinned down for four hours without communication and additional support, an order was given to "fix bayonets" and charge the entrenched enemy defensive position. "Helmetless and bare chested," Private First Class Hayes, holding an M-26 fragmentation grenade in each hand, chose to assault an enemy machine gun emplacement. In his assault, Private First Class Hayes was able to toss, underhanded, the grenade in his left hand toward the machine gun position. Before an accurate attempt to destroy the machine gun with the second grenade in his right hand, he was mortally wounded with his body falling headlong into the enemy position causing a lack of maneuverability of the machine gun. This heroic action is credited with directly saving the life of a fellow Marine in the assault of the position, allowing for the eventual success of breaking contact with the enemy and relief by friendly forces. Private First Class Hayes' courage, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

On the morning of 28 May 1968 during Operation ALLEN BROOK, Corporal Hazelwood's platoon was advancing across an open area toward a tree line near the village of Cu Ban (4), when the Marines came under heavy automatic weapons, small arms and rocket fire and were pinned down by a well entrenched enemy force. As supporting tanks moved into the area to aid the besieged unit, one vehicle was immediately disabled by an enemy rocket propelled grenade. Alertly detecting the source of the enemy fire, Corporal Hazelwood fearlessly exposed himself to hostile fire as he ran thirty- five meters to the nearest tank and utilizing the vehicle's tank-infantry phone, directed accurate 90-mm. fire into the enemy position, destroying it. Returning across the fire-swept area to his squad and realizing the importance of gaining fire superiority, Corporal Hazelwood again exposed himself to hostile fire as he organized his men and led an aggressive assault against the enemy-held tree line. Throughout the ensuing battle, he moved from one man to another, offering words of encouragement and directing accurate fire at enemy positions until he was mortally wounded. His dynamic leadership and determined actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in the accomplishment of his unit's mission. By his extraordinary courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Hazelwood upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.

On 22 August 1969, the Third Platoon was conducting a patrol north of the Vandergrift Combat Base when Private First Class Hemp and the two lead squads were pinned down by a heavy volume of automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenade fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force occupying a fortified bunker complex. Realizing that several wounded men had fallen in dangerously exposed positions, Private First Class Hemp, with complete disregard for his own safety, maneuvered across the fire-swept terrain to the side of his companions and, in two successful, hazardous attempts, moved two of his comrades to covered locations. Braving the intense enemy fire for a third time, he was moving toward another casualty when he was seriously wounded. Although realizing his need for immediate medical attention but, unwilling to risk other Marine lives during an attempt to evacuate him from his completely exposed position, Private First Class Hemp steadfastly refused to allow his companions to come to his aid and subsequently succumbed to his extensive injuries. On the night of 22 October 1969, Major Henry launched as Section Leader of a flight of two HA-1G Cobra helicopters assigned the emergency extraction of a seven-man reconnaissance patrol which had sustained four casualties. Arriving over the designated area, he immediately established radio contact with the team and was informed that only three members of the team were able to defend its position. Unable to establish the beleaguered patrols exact location, he requested a flare ship and commenced low-altitude passes over the area to search for the embattled men. Undaunted by the constant threat of hostile fire and extremely adverse weather conditions which severely restricted visibility and the area of maneuverability, Major Henry fearlessly directed his aircraft on repeated runs under the obscuring cloud cover. Maintaining continuous radio communication with the ground unit, he continually encouraged the Marines and requested guidance by visual sighting of his aircraft's lights or the sound of his engine in an attempt to pinpoint the patrol's position. As a result of his low-altitude circling of their position, he succeeded in preventing the enemy from launching an attack. After over eight hours of maneuvering over the reconnaissance team's position, Major Henry directed the insertion of a reaction force and the extraction of the patrol. By his courage, bold initiative and unswerving devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Major Henry was instrumental in saving the lives of several of his fellow Marines and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

On 23 August 1968, Private First Class Henry's unit was occupying a defensive position near the Cam Le Bridge, south of DaNang, when the area came under intense mortar and small arms fire. Learning that several Marines on the opposite side of the river were wounded and required medical evacuation, he unhesitatingly boarded a multi-purpose barge and, accompanied by three companions, maneuvered the craft across the river. Arriving in the designated area, he quickly realized that suppressive fire would be necessary to cover the evacuation of the casualties. Fearlessly rushing across seventy-five meters of fire-swept terrain, he reached a friendly unit and directed the deliver of suppressive fire at the enemy positions. Completely disregarding his own safety, he then attempted to return to his wounded comrades in order to assist in their evacuation and was mortally wounded. Due largely to his heroic and determined efforts, his injured companions were safely evacuated from the hazardous area. By his courage, resolute determination and selfless devotion to duty, Private First Class Henry inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

On 7 June 1968, Company D was participating in a battalion-size search and destroy operation southwest of Da Nang and was approaching a village near Phu Lac when the Marines suddenly came under intense machine gun and automatic rifle fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force. Almost immediately after the initial contact the third platoon commander and his radio operator were mortally wounded. Rapidly assessing the situation, Sergeant Henson unhesitatingly assumed command of the platoon and completely disregarding his own safety, repeatedly exposed himself to hostile fire while consolidating his unit's position. On two occasions, he fearlessly advanced into the fire-swept area to aid wounded Marines and move them to positions of relative safety. Continuing his determined efforts Sergeant Henson ensured that all of the casualties were evacuated and then boldly led his men in an aggressive assault that forced the enemy to flee and accounted for fifty-seven North Vietnamese soldiers killed. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Sergeant Henson contributed immeasurably to the accomplishment of his unit's mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

On 28 July 1969, Company K was occupying a night defensive position approximately three miles northwest of Cam Lo in Quang Tri Province. Suddenly, the Marines came under heavy ground attack by a large North Vietnamese Army force utilizing mortars, automatic weapons, and rocket-propelled grenades. During the initial moments of the firefight, a hostile rocket-propelled grenade exploded in Private First Class Herrod's fighting position, seriously wounding him and his two companions. After dragging his comrades to a position of relative safety, he boldly shielded them from further injuries with his own body and commenced delivering effective M-60 machine gun fire at the enemy. Alertly observing several hostile soldiers who were attempting to destroy nearby tanks with hand grenades, Private First Class Herrod delivered such accurate fire with his weapon that the enemy soldiers were forced to abandon their mission. When the hostile unit turned its attention to his machine gun position, Private First Class Herrod, completely disregarding his own painful wound, resolutely maintained his exposed position and continued to fire at the enemy until reinforcements arrived. His heroic and timely actions and sincere concern for the welfare of his fellow man inspired all who observed him. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, Private First Class Herrod contributed significantly to the subsequent defeat of the North Vietnamese Army force and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

One the morning of 1 July 1968, Company I's defensive perimeter near the Khe Sanh Combat Base was assaulted by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force, and after the Marines successfully repulsed the hostile attack, Private First Class Hester's squad was assigned to search the area for any remaining enemy. Suddenly observing a small hostile group, one of the Marines immediately delivered a heavy volume of fire upon the enemy soldiers and exhausted his supply of ammunition. Reacting instantly, Private First Class Hester fearlessly assaulted the hostile unit, killing a North Vietnamese soldier with his M-79 grenade launcher and preventing the remaining enemy from firing upon his defenseless comrade. Disregarding his own safety, he resolutely commenced reloading his weapon and was mortally wounded by hostile fire. Ignoring his painful injuries, he steadfastly remained in his dangerously exposed position and continued firing upon the enemy until he succumbed to his wounds. His bold initiative and resolute determination inspired all who observed his and were instrumental in saving the life of his fellow Marine. The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Martin Christopher Higgins (0-89589), Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company E, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 15 June 1967, during a search and destroy mission in conjunction with Operation ARIZONA in Quang Nam Province, Captain Higgins' left flank platoon came under intense small arms, machine gun and rocket fire from a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. Displaying exceptional tactical knowledge and exemplary leadership, Captain Higgins, although exposed to the enemy fire, immediately deployed his reserve platoon in a flanking maneuver and skillfully directed the fire of two supporting armored amphibian tractors which inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy and forced them to break contact. He then aggressively employed artillery and air strikes in order to pursue the enemy by fire. After reorganizing his platoons and redistributing ammunition, he continued the attack. Subsequently, when his lead platoon came under heavy fire at close range from four automatic weapons, 82-mm. mortars and 82-mm. antitank rockets, Captain Higgins quickly assessing the situation, courageously led a platoon across and open rice paddy through intense enemy fire to relieve the pressure on his forward elements and to bring maximum fire power to bear on the enemy. After directing accurate machine gun fire, which silenced the enemy fire on his right flank, he unhesitatingly continued the attack, directing point blank 105-mm. fire from the armored amphibian vehicles which resulted in the destruction of at least one rocket position and one machine gun emplacement. He then skillfully deployed his men to positions where they could deliver a heavy volume of fire on the enemy and gain fire superiority. Completely disregarding the enemy machine gun, mortar and rocket fire around him, Captain Higgins steadfastly continued to direct his units' fire until the enemy was forced to flee in panic and disorder. While pursuing the enemy, one amphibian tractor was severely damaged by two 82-mm. antitank rockets. Exhibiting calm presence of mind, Captain Higgins directed an intense volume of fire, which destroyed the rocket emplacement, and then supervised the movement of the disabled vehicle from the hostile area. His sound judgment and courageous actions were instrumental in reducing friendly casualties and accounting for at least forty enemy killed. By his bold initiative, exceptional professionalism and selfless devotion to duty, Captain Higgins inspired all who served with him and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

On 9 August 1968, during Operation Mameluke Thrust, Company M became heavily engaged with a large North Vietnamese Army force in Quang Nam Province. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Corporal HIGNIGHT unhesitatingly volunteered to assist a fire team in attacking a hostile machine gun position, and as the Marines maneuvered toward the objective, the enemy attempted to halt their advance with several grenades. Disregarding his own safety, Corporal HIGNIGHT immediately commenced searching for the hostile position from which the grenades were coming and was seriously wounded. Ignoring his painful injury, he located the enemy emplacement and silenced it with a hand grenade, enabling the fire team to continue the assault against the North Vietnamese machine gun position. When one Marine was wounded and lay dangerously exposed to the intense enemy fire, Corporal HIGNIGHT fearlessly maneuvered across the fire-swept terrain to the side of his injured comrade and moved him to a position of relative safety. After the Marines had reached the hostile machine gun and silenced it with a heavy volume of fire, Corporal HIGNIGHT entered the emplacement and, observing an enemy soldier alive, quickly subdued him in close combat and captured him. Although subsequently wounded again, he steadfastly refused medical evacuation and resolutely continued his determined efforts. On 13 May 1967, during Operation Union, the defensive positions of Company M came under intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire. Unhesitatingly exposing himself to heavy enemy fire, First Lieutenant HILL maneuvered to an exposed vantage point to adjust artillery fire against the enemy's positions and remained in this unprotected position for over two hours, skillfully directing and adjusting supporting arms fire until the enemy fire was silenced. Upon learning that the platoon commander, platoon sergeant and guide of the Second Platoon had been seriously wounded, he assumed command of the unit and moved across 200 meters of fire swept terrain to the platoon's location. Demonstrating exceptional leadership and tactical ability, First Lieutenant HILL reorganized the unit, encouraged his men and aggressively led the platoon. Later in the afternoon, he was recalled to the command post where he immediately coordinated and supervised the planning of night defensive fires for the company's position. In the early morning hours 14 May 1967, the enemy launched an intense machine gun and mortar attack, closely followed by a coordinated infantry assault against the company's position. With complete disregard for his own safety, he moved to an exposed vantage point and for over two hours, calmly directed artillery fire on the hostile force, often within ninety meters of the company's lines. As the attack subsided, First Lieutenant HILL relentlessly pursued the fleeing enemy with intense supporting arms fire. In large measure due to his determined efforts and superior professional ability, Company M accounted for over 150 enemy confirmed killed. By his steadfast courage, exceptional professionalism and selfless devotion to duty, First Lieutenant HILL was an inspiration to all who served with him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Twyman Ralph Hill (0-45538), Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the First Military Police Battalion, Force Logistic Command, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the morning of 30 January 1968, elements of Lieutenant Colonel Hill's battalion were deployed as a blocking force to contain a combined unit of Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army Regulars who were preparing to attack the I Corps Tactical Zone Headquarters near DaNang. During the initial contact with the enemy, one platoon leader was mortally wounded and another was pinned down by heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire, preventing him from directing the actions of his men. Upon learning of the seriousness of the situation, Lieutenant Colonel Hill unhesitatingly left the relative safety of his command post and moved to the area of the intense fire fight to instantly appraise himself of the tactical developments. Immediately regrouping the members of the two platoons, he directed a heavy volume of fire on the enemy. Observing a wounded Marine lying in the exposed area approximately fifty meters to his front, he ignored the intense hostile fire around him and fearlessly moved across the fire-swept terrain and moved the injured man to a more protected position. Assured that the Marine was receiving medical aid, he returned to the area of heaviest contact where he continued to direct the actions of his men. Observing that another Marine had been wounded and lay exposed to hostile fire, he completely disregarded his personal safety and courageously raced into the hazardous area where he moved the injured man to a position of safety. Throughout the engagement, he repeatedly ignored the danger to his own life as he moved from one position to another, ably directing the fire of the Marines and encouraging his men. By his inspiring leadership, courageous actions and selfless devotion to duty throughout, Lieutenant Colonel Hill upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

On 17 June 1969, while First Lieutenant Hoffman's platoon was conducting a search and destroy operation in the Dong Ha area, the lead squad came under a heavy volume of small arms and automatic weapons fire from a North Vietnamese Army unit occupying well-concealed bunkers. Observing two wounded Marines fall in an area dangerously exposed to the hostile fire, First Lieutenant Hoffman unhesitatingly left his position of relative security and fearlessly moving across the fire-swept terrain to a forward position, skillfully deployed his remaining men in effective fighting positions to assist the beleaguered squad. Then with complete disregard for his own safety, he raced across forty meters of open rice paddy and dragged the two casualties to the safety of a nearby bomb crater to await medical evacuation. Rejoining his unit, be boldly initiated an aggressive assault against an enemy machine gun emplacement, enabling his men to silence the North Vietnamese fire from this point. Seeing another injured man fall, First Lieutenant Hoffman directed his men to provide coving fire as he fearlessly ran to the man's side and although becoming a vulnerable target for North Vietnamese Army snipers, boldly carried the injured man to a covered position. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, First Lieutenant Hoffman was instrumental in saved the lives of several Marines and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Observing a Marine wounded and lying in an exposed area, Lance Corporal Holloway ignored the intense hostile fire as he ran across the fire-swept zone to the side of his injured comrade and began to move him to safety. When an enemy hand grenade fell next to the wounded man, he unhesitatingly threw himself over his fellow Marine to shield him, thus absorbing the fragments of the grenade when it exploded. Although Lance Corporal Holloway subsequently succumbed to his wounds, he saved the life of his comrade. Holt (1059700), Gunnery Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Platoon Commander with Company L, Third Battalion, Third Marines, Third Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 21 August 1967, upon learning that a convoy and advance elements of a company relief column had been ambushed along Route 9 south of Thon Son Lam, Gunner Sergeant Holt organized the remainder of the company within the battalion perimeter and immediately deployed to aid the beleaguered Marines. Upon reaching the rear elements of the engaged Third Platoon, he was briefed on the tactical situation. Skillfully directing his forces through the continuing enemy fire, he advanced to the surrounded company command group, encountering increased resistance as the enemy employed rocket propelled grenade launchers, recoilless rifles and mortars. Although wounded in the neck and leg in the initial contact, Gunnery Sergeant Holt completely disregarded his own safety and welfare as he administered first aid to his wounded radio operator. Then, courageously, exposing himself to the heavy enemy fire, he crawled 100 meters across open terrain to direct his men's fire. Upon gaining fire superiority, Gunnery Sergeant Holt skillfully maneuvered his men forward through intermittent enemy fire until the reached the command group. Immediately organizing his men into a defensive perimeter, he provided protection as the command group moved to a more advantageous position. Despite his painful wounds, he refused medical treatment until after he had led his men back to the battalion area at the conclusion of the day's action. As a result of his courageous leadership and composure under fire, he was able to consolidate the company's elements and undoubtedly prevented the enemy form overrunning the command group's position. By his braver, inspiring leadership and selfless devotion to duty, Gunnery Sergeant Holt upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Julius Blanchard Hopkins (1940257), Staff Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with Company E, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, on 15 June 1967, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During Operation ARIZONA, the First Platoon of Company E was temporarily halted by intense automatic weapons, rocket and mortar fire from a well-entrenched North Vietnamese Army force. When his platoon was ordered forward to assist the beleaguered unit, Staff Sergeant Hopkins, disregarding his own safety, repeatedly exposed himself to heavy hostile fire to skillfully maneuver his unit across an open area to the ambush site. Arriving at the besieged platoon's position, Staff Sergeant Hopkins was wounded in the wrist, however, ignoring his painful injury, he steadfastly refused medical aid and continued to direct effective fire on the North Vietnamese Army force, which resulted in heavy enemy casualties. After gaining fire superiority, Staff Sergeant Hopkins ably assisted in evacuating the wounded to positions of relative safety. Later, when the platoon commander of First Platoon was mortally wounded, Staff Sergeant Hopkins immediately assumed command of the unit and effectively deployed his men against the enemy until contact with the North Vietnamese Army force was broken. His outstanding professional ability and bold initiative in the face of extreme danger were an inspiration to all who observed him and were instrumental in inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. By his courage, inspiring leadership and selfless devotion to duty, Staff Sergeant Hopkins upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Albert Steven Hurtado (2072324), Lance Corporal, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company E, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in the Quang Tri Province of the Republic of Vietnam on 19 September 1966. Lance Corporal Hurtado's platoon reconnaissance patrol was taken under heavy small-arms and automatic weapons fire by a larger force of communist regulars and suffered severe casualties. Upon learning that men on the point were wounded and pinned down, Lance Corporal Hurtado, disregarding his own safety, unhesitatingly advanced into the critical zone and evacuated one wounded comrade. Hearing moans of another wounded Marine, he again entered the area but was felled, mortally wounded by automatic weapons fire. By his heroic actions, valiant fighting spirit and inspiring devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Hurtado upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to James H. Huskey (2363681), Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company C, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam during the period 4 to 6 April 1968. Then a Private First Class, Sergeant Huskey participated in a successful three-company effort to capture Hill 471, a key terrain feature overlooking an important highway near the Khe Sanh Combat Base. While walking as point man for a squad whose mission was to dislocate and destroy enemy elements entrenched along a narrow ridge line, Sergeant Huskey was wounded by heavy enemy fire from the front and both flanks. Although severely wounded in both legs, he stood up in full view of the enemy and accurately fired into the enemy trenches. By drawing the enemy's fire to himself, his squad was able to regroup and assault the left flank and trenches ahead. Sergeant Huskey continued his intensive fire, knocking out the bunker to his right and killing several enemy soldiers. By his daring actions, bold courage and selfless devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Sergeant Huskey inspired all who observed him and contributed in large measure to securing the important hill; thereby upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
